A-Level
Distance learning now ranges from a full online school place to a single subject top-up course, and the three models carry very different enrolment and exam arrangements. Families often assume that paying for a course also secures a centre, then discover in February that no school will enter them for the summer series. What deserves attention before signing anything is the specification being taught, the weekly teaching pattern, and the centre that will actually submit the entries.
A full online school issues reports, predicts grades and enters students for exams, which is why its fees look like a private school's. Blended arrangements keep the original school as the legal centre while moving a few subjects online, and single-subject courses sell teaching only. The distinction that matters is administrative rather than pedagogical: who holds the student record, who signs the UCAS reference, and who submits the entry. A provider that cannot answer those three questions is selling videos, not schooling.
Every A-Level is defined by a specification that fixes the units, the weighting and the style of assessment, so two courses with the same subject name can differ in the number of papers and their length. A provider that says it covers the syllabus has told you nothing until it names the code, whether that is 7357 for AQA maths or 9MA0 for Edexcel. Ask for a mapping from each teaching block to a specification point, because a course built for first-year students often leaves the second-year-only units half taught.
A timetable should show the weekly pattern subject by subject, with live hours, tutorial slots and the time zone converted to where the student actually lives. Recordings cover missed lessons but not the moment in a derivation when a student would have raised a hand, which is where most of the learning happens in maths and the sciences. Response times for written questions belong in the contract, since a promise made in a sales call has a way of turning into three days of silence once term starts.
Science A-Levels carry a separate practical endorsement, recorded alongside the grade rather than inside it, and medicine, veterinary and some engineering courses do check for it. A remote student without a laboratory has to negotiate access to the required experiments and a teacher willing to sign the record, which is a local arrangement rather than something a video platform can supply. Families usually discover this gap during applications, when the timetable for fixing it has already closed.
Private candidates cannot enter themselves directly; a registered centre has to submit the entries, and under JCQ regulations a centre is free to refuse anyone outside its own roll. Summer entries close in the second half of February, late entries run into April at a higher fee, and access arrangements such as extra time need evidence submitted well before that. Students tend to assume that paying the exam fee settles the matter, when the harder problem is finding a head of centre willing to put a name on the entry form.
UK A-Levels are examined once a year in summer, while the international versions add a second window: Edexcel International A-Level runs in January and June, and CAIE sits in May/June and October/November. An extra session can cut a resit wait from twelve months to five, at the cost of a course that has to be planned around two cycles. Universities generally treat the international and UK versions as equivalent, though a few competitive courses name the UK specification or particular units, so the entry requirements page is worth reading before the contract.
Tuition is only the visible line. Exam fees are charged per subject and per paper by the centre, private candidates usually pay more than internal ones, and practical arrangements are billed separately. Resits repeat the exam fee, some centres add an administration charge, and cross-currency payments bring conversion and instalment costs that never appear in the brochure. Adding those four items changes the ranking surprisingly often, so ask for a written schedule rather than a verbal estimate.
Titles say little; a track record of entering candidates does. Ask which awarding body the school has entered students with over the past three years, how those candidates performed, and whether the teacher has marked for that body, since examiners explain questions through the mark scheme rather than through the textbook. A provider with no entry history tends to teach the book in order rather than the paper, and in a remote setting the teacher's read on a wrong answer is the only feedback a student gets.
Three items on a UCAS form can only come from a school: predicted grades, the reference, and confirmation of study. A course platform supplies none of them, so a private candidate needs a centre or the original school to cooperate, and a low prediction can cost an interview at a competitive course. For 2026 entry UCAS moved the equal consideration deadline to 14 January, which leaves roughly six weeks after the December mocks to get a signature, so the question of who signs should be settled in September.
A two-year A-Level is normally planned around three hundred guided hours per subject, which works out at four or five taught hours a week plus roughly six hours of independent study. Distance courses remove the commute but not the pace, and a student who falls behind in week three tends to accumulate recordings rather than knowledge. Treating the live lesson as immovable, and catching up the same day, matters more than any study app; the signals worth watching are replay hours and submission times, not the end-of-term report.
Put the questions on one page and ask for written answers: which specification, how many live hours, who signs the practical record, which centre number, how exam and resit fees are calculated, who issues the prediction, and what triggers a refund. The item answered vaguely is usually the one that fails later. A provider that can show last year's centre and subject list is telling you something a brochure cannot, and refundable deposit terms deserve the same scrutiny as the teaching.
A refusal from one school is not the end of the search: private schools, international course providers and centres that regularly take external candidates are all worth calling. Travel time should be judged on an exam morning rather than on a normal commute, and the question to ask is subject-specific, since some centres only enter their own students for certain papers. Keeping two centres on the list leaves room to move when the first one says no in the last fortnight before entries close.
September settles the awarding body and the specification, and starts the search for a centre; October pins down who writes the prediction and the reference, with a name rather than a department. January belongs to UCAS, February to the entry deadline, and the spring months to access arrangements and practical signatures, which leaves four weeks before the first paper for revision rather than for changing courses.
Distance study suits students topping up one weak subject, families living abroad, and anyone resitting on their own schedule. It suits far less the student who needs a laboratory, a register taken every morning, or someone standing over the homework, because nobody will notice a silent absence on a video call. A one-month trial before committing shows whether work is submitted and questions answered, and the answer usually appears by the third week.
