奖学金申请文书 个人陈述区别 评审标准
奖学金文书和个人陈述经常被同一批学生混着写。个人陈述讲你为什么想读这个专业,奖学金文书讲这笔钱为什么该给你。评审手里的评分表只认后者。这篇把两类文本的差别拆开写,从开头段、结构、字数预算到改稿流程,每一节都给出可以照着做的动作。
Scholarship essays and personal statements are often written by the same applicant in the same week, yet they answer different questions. One explains why a subject interests you; the other explains why funding should go to you rather than to someone with an identical transcript. This piece separates the two, from opening paragraphs and section structure to word budgets and revision routines, with concrete moves you can copy.
A scholarship essay is read by a panel that has already seen hundreds of strong transcripts, so academic ability alone rarely separates applicants. What the panel needs is evidence that money spent on you will produce something specific: a project finished, a community served, a qualification used. That is a different question from the one a personal statement answers, where the focus sits on subject interest and readiness for the course. Applicants who recycle their personal statement usually end up with elegant sentences and no verifiable facts, which is exactly what selection criteria are designed to filter out. Read the criteria page before drafting, because the weighting published there tells you which paragraph deserves the most space.
Panels are rarely a single professor reading closely. Most programmes run a two-stage process: an administrator checks eligibility and completeness, then a committee of donors, alumni and subject teachers scores what survives. That rhythm rewards writing which can be understood on a first pass, since a file may get only a few minutes before a score is entered. Structure your sections in the same order as the scoring sheet, one criterion per paragraph, and note beside each criterion the single fact you will use. Where no fact exists, the gap is in your experience rather than your vocabulary.
Openers in scholarship essays do not have the luxury of a childhood memory. Within the first half-minute a reader wants to know who you are, which award you are applying for, and why the criteria fit. Put an identity, an aim and one piece of evidence in the same sentence, then let the rest of the paragraph explain the context. Thanking the foundation before stating your case pushes the substance to page two, and many files never recover from that. Move your hardest number into sentence one and leave the gratitude for the closing line, if it belongs anywhere.
Narrative order matters less than causal order here. A workable shape is problem, action, result, with a number attached to each stage: who was affected, what you personally did and how often, what changed and how you know. Vague claims about organising a charity event tell a panel nothing about scale or your role in it. Saying that you ran a collection for six weeks across three sites and doubled the previous year's total gives them something to score. Failures are usable too, provided the paragraph names the mistake and the correction you made afterwards, which many applicants omit out of caution.
Word limits on scholarship essays are usually tighter than on personal statements, and 500 words is a common ceiling. Allocate by paragraph before you draft: roughly 80 words for the opening, 150 for each of two evidence sections, and 80 to close. When you run over, cut adjectives and background rather than facts, since the facts are what the rubric scores. Applicants coming from the UCAS system should note that character counts and word counts are not interchangeable, and a 4000-character limit is not the same as 650 words. Check which unit the foundation uses before you trim.
Award names carry information. Many are endowed by a company, a profession or a family, and the founding note on the foundation's website usually states what the donor hoped to support. That note is a legitimate guide to which of your experiences to foreground, and ignoring it leaves the panel wondering whether you read the brief at all. Responding to the donor's intent does not mean flattering them; it means choosing evidence that sits close to their purpose. Two well-chosen examples aligned with the founding note beat five impressive ones chosen at random.
Reference letters and essays are read side by side, so duplicating the same anecdote in both wastes space. Let the essay carry your own actions and reasoning, and leave the third-party confirmation to the referee. Brief your referee properly: name the award, describe the criteria, and suggest one incident you would like mentioned. A request that says only please write me a reference produces generic praise that scores poorly. Four weeks of notice is a sensible minimum, and school holidays around Christmas and Easter call for a fortnight more.
Two sentence types stop a reader: stacked adjectives and self-assessment that cannot be checked. Passionate, diligent and outstanding leadership scores nothing on a rubric because none of those words has an object, a scale or a witness. Shifting between I and we inside one paragraph creates a second problem, since the panel cannot tell which part was yours. Fix it by attaching a role and a duration to every collective claim, replacing helped with the specific task you owned. Emotional detail has its place, but sympathy does not convert into marks; the choices you made under pressure do.
Revision matters more than drafting when the criteria are explicit. Read once for evidence only, marking every paragraph that lacks a checkable fact. Read again for order, asking whether the sequence follows the scoring sheet and whether the weakest example has drifted to the front. A third pass should be out loud, because sentences that trip your tongue are usually too long or skip a step in the logic. Space the passes a day apart rather than rewriting five times in one evening. Give the draft to someone outside your field as well; wherever they lose the thread, a tired panel will lose it too.
A short checklist works better than a long one, provided every line is actually opened and checked. Deadlines follow the time zone stated on the foundation's site, and overseas applicants routinely lose hours by assuming local time. Commonly missed items include stamped transcripts, score-send codes and a confirmation from your referee. Name files in a predictable pattern so a reviewer downloading twenty PDFs can find yours. Keep the confirmation page and application number after submitting, since both are needed for follow-up, and make sure your inbox accepts mail from unfamiliar domains before interview invitations go out.
