IB AP A Level
Every autumn, families sit down with the same question: does the IB, A Level or AP route give a student an edge in US undergraduate admissions? The three programmes were built for different purposes; one prizes breadth and extended writing, one prizes depth in a small number of subjects, and one separates the exam from the course so students can mix subjects freely. US admissions offices do not rank these systems against each other; they read a transcript inside its own context, weigh course rigour against what the school offers, and look for a plausible link between chosen subjects and the intended major. Comparing the three in the abstract produces misleading answers, while comparing them inside one student's record produces answers a family can act on.
The IB Diploma is run by the IBO and asks for six subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, plus the core of theory of knowledge, the extended essay and creativity, activity, service; each subject is marked out of seven and the core can add three points, giving a maximum of 45. A Level is awarded by individual exam boards in England, usually in three or four subjects over two years, with grades running from A* to E; the linear structure introduced in 2015 means the final exams carry the weight, which is worth explaining on a US application. AP is not a diploma at all: the College Board sets subject exams in May, scored 1 to 5, and students can sit them with or without a school course. Because the units differ, a score of 38 in the IB and three AP 5s cannot be placed side by side; what matters is whether the student took the hardest courses the school actually offers.
US admissions readers start with course rigour: what did this student take from what the school actually offers? Most schools submit a profile listing available courses, whether the IB or AP is offered, and any rules about when students can take them; readers hold the transcript against that profile to see whether hard courses were avoided. Next comes performance within that context, meaning the student's position among peers who carried a similar load, and only then does the name of the system enter the conversation, at the lowest weight of all. Many families assume an IB diploma automatically adds weight, yet in practice a student who topped a school's A Level cohort for two years and self-studied two APs often reads more clearly than an IB candidate sitting six Standard Level subjects. A common mistake is comparing grades without reading the school profile line that says a course was never offered.
The IB forces breadth: six subjects spread across language, humanities, experimental science and mathematics, so a student cannot close off options at sixteen. The extended essay, roughly 4,000 words with a self-chosen question, a supervisor and a literature review, mirrors the kind of work first-year US writing seminars demand; when the essay topic connects to the intended major, it gives readers a visible trail of where an interest began. Theory of knowledge pushes students to ask how a claim is justified, which shows up in interviews when they are asked why they trust a particular conclusion. Breadth has a price, though: six subjects run in parallel, one weak subject drags the total down, and the three Higher Level choices set the ceiling on the final score.
An IB timetable leaves almost no slack: six subjects plus the core, and the weekly workload measured in hours is the heaviest of the three routes. Internal assessments, the extended essay and the theory of knowledge exhibition tend to land between March and April, right when US application work begins; early decision files go out in November and regular files in January, so essays and recommendation requests have to start months earlier. Many students leave the extended essay until the second year and then compete with their own application essays for the same weeks. Families considering the IB should map the two years backwards from the May session and push core tasks into the first year, because a school's internal deadline is a floor rather than a target.
A Level
A Level asks for three or four subjects, which lets a student concentrate on two or three directions and go as deep as a first-year university course. That structure is efficient for UK applications; for US files, its value is clean evidence, since two years of mathematics and further mathematics plus a competition or a project forms a line a reader can follow. Subjects such as physics, chemistry and economics carry heavy derivation and essay-style answers in the second year, less writing than the IB but denser in technical vocabulary and argument. US universities do not penalise three subjects as such, provided they match the intended major and sit at the top of what the school offers; three unrelated subjects with no explanation, on the other hand, read as thin.
A Level
The first two years of a US degree are general education, with writing, humanities, social science and science requirements, so readers check whether an applicant is ready for that spread. An A Level student taking only mathematics, physics and chemistry, with nothing in the essay about humanities, can look one-sided; many US universities also recommend a writing-intensive course, which in the A Level system means English literature, history or economics. Where a school does not offer such a subject, the profile should say so, and readers usually adjust the judgement. The common error is discovering in the autumn of the final year that no essay-based subject appears on the transcript, then trying to fix it with the personal statement, which rarely works.
AP separates the exam from the course: students can take an AP class at school or prepare independently and register for the test, which gives families changing systems a great deal of flexibility. US high schools offer AP widely, so admissions readers know exactly how a 1 to 5 score works and need no translation. Credit is the other use, and each university publishes its own AP policy on its website, usually asking for a 4 or a 5 with different thresholds by subject, so the target school's page has to be checked line by line. For students outside the IB or A Level systems, AP is the most direct way to show academic strength, although a single exam carries less weight than two years of coursework and laboratory work.
Every year some students sit eight or ten AP exams, and parents treat the number as proof of competitiveness. Readers look at the link between subjects and the intended major, and at whether the student had time for anything else; ten 4s against an empty activities list reads worse than five 5s plus a project sustained over two years. Many students assume more subjects must be better, yet extra exams beyond the school's timetable need a stated reason, otherwise they look like score collecting. The May window is fixed and crowded, and a heavy AP load eats into schoolwork and essay drafting; three to five subjects tied to the major, taken seriously, beat ten spread thin.
An IB student should align the three Higher Level subjects with the intended major and keep one humanities or arts subject at Standard Level, so the transcript is not all science. An A Level student should point the three main subjects in one direction, use a fourth for writing or social science, and add two or three APs or a long project to supply evidence US readers recognise. An AP student has to build the narrative personally, since the exams provide no framework: subject choice, competitions, research and activities must connect into one line. All three routes send students to strong US universities; the difference is how much explaining each route requires, and students who switch systems mid-way should address the break in the transcript rather than hide it.
The IB May session, the AP May window and the A Level May to June exam season all fall in the same weeks, which does not clash with US deadlines but does collide with school exams, competitions and summer programme applications. By November of the final year, early applications need transcripts, references, essays and English test scores, and a poor May session can push resits into the autumn. Laying out the exam calendar a year ahead and marking every deadline is the only reliable method; exam boards publish their timetables on their official sites, and JCQ publishes a common timetable as well. Plan from the official calendar, not from dates passed down by older students, because one missed deadline pushes everything behind it.
Three concrete questions settle the choice: can a student carry six subjects at once, or does the same student do better concentrating on three; which programme does the school actually staff well; and does the target major list specific prerequisite subjects? The IB suits strong writers who accept breadth and manage time steadily, while A Level suits students with a clear direction who want depth and are willing to add humanities evidence separately. AP suits self-driven students in flexible schools who can build their own narrative. All three routes reach top US universities; what differs is whether the transcript's structure can be read, and families should start from the target school's recent admissions guidance rather than from the name of a system.
