Students who choose art usually meet a course decision before they meet a drawing problem. A-Level Art, IB Visual Arts and a one-year foundation course score work in different ways and ask for different application material. This piece sets out what the exam boards and the IBO actually require, then compares that with what art schools look for in a portfolio, so the timetable can be planned before the deadlines arrive.
A-Level
The AQA A-level Art and Design specification (7201 to 7206) splits the total mark into two components. Component 1 carries 60 per cent and is a personal investigation, where students set their own theme and keep a continuous record in visual and written form, supported by an essay of 1000 to 3000 words. Component 2 carries the remaining 40 per cent, with a question paper released in the exam year and 15 supervised hours for the final outcome; Pearson Edexcel uses the same 60/40 split and the same 15-hour condition. A common mistake is to spend all fifteen hours on the final piece while the investigation journal stays shut in a bag.
At GCSE, AQA Art and Design (8201 to 8206) is 60 per cent portfolio and 40 per cent externally set assignment, with 10 supervised hours for the assignment. Five extra hours sounds small, but the A-level demand is different: the personal investigation has to show a readable line of thinking from observation through experiment and failure to a resolved outcome, and examiners mark whether that line holds. Many students still rely on copying and neat finished pieces in Year 11, then find the same habit stalls in Year 12; the clearest marker in moderation is the journal itself, since a book of polished drawings with no wrong turns rarely reaches the top band.
The IBO Visual Arts guide divides the grade into three parts: a comparative study worth 20 per cent, a process portfolio worth 40 per cent and an exhibition worth 40 per cent, with the same weighting at SL and HL and differences in the number of works and screens. The comparative study asks for analysis of works from different cultural contexts, not a personal reaction; the process portfolio records material tests, failures and revisions and is marked on thinking rather than finish. Students curate the exhibition themselves, choosing works, arranging the space and writing the rationale; many assume the exhibition is simply the best pieces on a wall, when the assessment looks at the relationships across the whole body of work.
Coursework is marked by an exam board, while a portfolio is read by admissions tutors, and the two standards do not overlap. Board criteria sit in the specification, whereas a school is asking whether this applicant has a direction of their own; interviews at London art schools often begin with the sketchbook, turned from the first page to the last, because the tutor wants to see how judgements formed. A common mistake is to send a PDF of the most finished pieces with no working drawings at all. Failed studies do not cost marks, provided the annotation explains why the idea was dropped and what changed in the next version.
A-level art costs more time than the timetable suggests, since studio work takes up evenings and three essay or portfolio subjects will collide in December. Architecture applicants often pair art with maths and physics, because structure, proportion and loading have to be calculated rather than felt; design applicants can take Design and Technology, where knowledge of materials and processes feeds straight into the portfolio. The EPQ is worth considering as a rehearsal for the research writing that a portfolio needs. Many students assume art students can skip science, then struggle in an architecture or industrial design interview when basic structural questions arrive.
Foundation Diploma in Art and Design,再进本科。
The usual route into a British art school is a one-year Foundation Diploma in Art and Design after eighteen, followed by a degree; the year is not a repeat of A-level but a shift from set projects to a personal direction, where students choose their own materials, scale and mode of presentation. Foundation portfolios are usually built with a tutor inside the course, and references come from that tutor; many families treat the year as a gap, yet it often sets the level at which the first degree year starts. Two things are worth checking when choosing a foundation: whether studios are separated by discipline, and whether the tutors still practise.
Art applications go through UCAS, but the portfolio is not uploaded there; schools contact applicants separately about a digital submission or an interview, and a conditional offer normally weighs two things at once: predicted A-level or IB grades and the portfolio interview. The bulk of the portfolio is best finished between September and December, because coursework deadlines fall close to the mid-January UCAS date; many students wait for predicted grades before starting and are left with three weeks. A common mistake is to rebuild the portfolio for every school on the list, so that by the fifth version the earliest and strongest one is already gone.
AQA Photography (7206) shares the assessment structure of fine art but works differently: shooting, editing, sequencing and printing each take time, and a missing step leaves no coherent set; work made for a screen has to survive scale, since an image that looks sharp on a phone often turns flat at A3. Moving image needs a stated edit order and a note on sound sources, not just a finished clip; many students assume photography means no drawing, yet composition, light and colour decisions are still worked out in sketches. The common error is to hand over several hundred raw files with no sign of selection.
The UCAS personal statement is short, and adjectives are the least useful thing in an art application; saying what you saw, where you saw it and which work changed your method does more than a claim about passion. Interviews usually open with something concrete: what would you do next with this piece; applicants who cannot answer often made work set by a teacher rather than chosen by themselves. Many students think a grand theme is required, when tutors would rather hear how one failure was handled. A timeline page marking the week each decision was made is often more useful in an interview than another finished piece.
Four pitfalls catch international applicants most often: a portfolio of finished pieces with no sketches, which hides the judgement behind the work; copying a known artist's style, when imitation belongs in the journal rather than the submitted portfolio; using generative tools without saying so, which collapses the moment an interview turns to process. The fourth is poor photography, where a yellow cast or a cropped edge lowers the first impression before anyone reads the work. Many students assume a thicker portfolio is stronger, when the page limit exists for a reason.
School resources should be used to the limit: studio opening hours, the materials list and the rhythm of tutor feedback. Art teachers in British schools usually review journals once a week, and a missed slot means a week of backlog. Outside support works best on gaps such as layout, digital output or interview language, not on choosing the theme for a student. Before paying for help, ask whether the work itself will be altered, since heavily edited pieces cannot be explained in an interview. A monthly check helps: if one page were pulled out alone, could the student say what problem it solved.
