Families often assume that ticking a box on the Common App is enough, then discover in April that the offer contains no grant money at all. What follows separates the federal route from institutional and outside awards, and points to the official pages where the current year's rules live. Figures change every cycle, so treat any number here as a prompt to check the source rather than a fixed fact.
Three routes exist and none of them replaces the others: federal money arrives through FAFSA, institutional money through a school's own form or the CSS Profile, and outside awards through separate competitions. A family can pursue all three at once; whether the awards stack, and by how much, is decided by each college's own policy rather than by arithmetic. The common error is stopping after FAFSA, since the federal record only travels to the schools listed on the form and every other college sees nothing until the student adds it. The opposite mistake is just as frequent: households that assume their income rules them out skip FAFSA entirely and lose access to federal loans along with any grant they might have qualified for.
FAFSA 的全称是 Free Application for Federal Student Aid, 免费, 入口只有 studentaid.gov 一个。
The form is free and lives at studentaid.gov; for the 2027-28 cycle it opened on 1 October 2026, a date the US Department of Education publishes each year. Income figures come from the tax return filed two years earlier, which is why every enrolled student resubmits annually rather than once. Since the 2024-25 cycle the output is called the Student Aid Index, replacing the old Expected Family Contribution; a negative SAI, down to -1500, means the formula assesses no family contribution rather than that a college pays the student. What actually sets the award is the gap between that index and the total cost of attendance at a particular school.
Five federal instruments matter, and they behave very differently. A Pell Grant is money that is never repaid, reserved for undergraduates and capped at the equivalent of six full-time years; the Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant is a small campus fund distributed until it runs out, so late applicants may receive nothing. Federal Work-Study pays a subsidised wage for part-time work on or near campus, while a Direct Subsidized Loan has its interest covered by the government during study and requires demonstrated need. Unsubsidized loans are open to any eligible borrower but accrue interest from disbursement, and PLUS borrowing for parents and graduate students follows limits the Department of Education republishes each year.
need-based 与 merit-based 的分配逻辑
Institutional money splits into two logics that are often confused. Need-based aid fills the gap between the Student Aid Index and a school's total cost, shrinking as family income rises and sometimes vanishing at a threshold the college sets. Merit awards ignore income entirely and price the applicant instead, using grades, competitions, portfolios or a specific talent to attract a particular profile. Whether the two can coexist depends on the awarding policy buried in each financial aid site, which may permit stacking up to cost or require merit money to displace an equivalent amount of need. Large research universities and small liberal arts colleges handle this differently, so a rule read on one campus does not transfer to another.
Two separate questions decide how hard a school is to afford. Need-blind describes admission that ignores whether an applicant requires aid, while need-aware means the aid request enters the decision; meeting full demonstrated need is a different promise about filling the calculated gap after admission. A college can be need-blind without meeting need, and generous without being blind. The reliable place to check is the Common Data Set each institution publishes, whose section H states the admission policy, the share of need met and how much of the package is grant rather than loan. Lists circulating on forums lag by a year or two, and for international applicants the pool of genuinely need-blind colleges is small enough to verify one by one.
CSS Profile 与 Net Price Calculator
The CSS Profile, administered by the College Board, asks far more than FAFSA does: home equity, siblings' tuition, the income of a non-custodial parent, all of which private colleges use to allocate their own funds. Supporting tax documents usually go through IDOC afterwards, and a file stays unread until the paperwork is complete. The other tool is the Net Price Calculator, which federal rules require every Title IV institution to post; entering grades and family income returns a first-year net cost that beats any ranking site's guess. Its real value comes before an early decision application, because that acceptance is binding and the four-year arithmetic is easier to face beforehand.
International applicants face a narrower set of options with clearer rules. FAFSA is restricted to citizens and eligible non-citizens, so an F-1 applicant cannot reach Pell grants or federal loans at all. What remains is institutional need-based aid, concentrated at a small group of private colleges that publish a full-need commitment, and merit awards, which are more common at public flagships and technical universities. Outside scholarships must be hunted down through home governments, foundations and corporate programmes; the sums are modest, but a documented award reads well on a CV. Before an I-20 is issued the family must document funds for the first year, and those figures have to match whatever the aid letter states.
Written material in an aid application is often treated as a formality, but it is what decides the merit side. Readers respond to specifics rather than adjectives: a community project sustained across three years, a placing at a regional competition, a piece of research whose method can be explained. A frequent mistake is turning the essay into a catalogue of hardship, when the need-based calculation is driven by forms and tax returns that prose cannot move. For merit essays, name the project, the role and the verifiable outcome inside a single page; references should come from teachers who can describe a scene, because generic praise of intellectual curiosity carries little weight in a review room.
Working backwards makes the calendar manageable. The summer before senior year is for running each college's Net Price Calculator, drawing up a shortlist of ten to fifteen schools and noting aid deadlines, some of which fall two weeks before the admission deadline. FAFSA opens in October and should go in as soon as grades and tax records are ready, since state grants often carry their own cut-offs; early applications close in November with the CSS Profile and IDOC uploads travelling alongside. January brings regular deadlines and then a stretch of document requests, April brings the award letters to compare line by line across grant, loan and campus work, and a documented appeal is possible where the package looks wrong. A deposit on 1 May closes the cycle.
