Three to five extra portfolio pieces, each with a short note on material, process and the problem addressed, beat a longer selection; ask a tutor who has taught you in a practical setting, and give them specific incidents rather than adjectives. A missed deadline rarely comes with a second chance.

Scholarship money generally lands after the fee deadline, so keep it out of your first-term cash flow.

Twelve weeks is a workable horizon: the first month narrows the theme and runs two material experiments, the middle month produces two garments or toiles with weekly page photographs, and the last month is layout, shooting and writing, with a fortnight kept for references and scholarship forms. Plans slip, so build in slack instead of scheduling every day; two spare weeks are worth more than a perfect timetable.
