Every autumn the same question arrives from Chinese families: my child has good grades, can we get the fees covered? The honest answer is narrower than most lists suggest. Government schemes are almost entirely postgraduate, so the money that actually reaches an undergraduate comes from universities and their departments. This piece separates what is open to you from what is not, and flags the points where applications usually go wrong. Where a scheme is named, treat the university page for the current cycle as the final word.
Three Pools of Funding
Funding for international undergraduates in the UK is scattered across three pools: public bodies, the university itself, and individual departments. Most government schemes are written for postgraduates, which leaves university awards as the realistic target for a bachelor degree. Whether you are considered automatically depends on the institution, so read the fees and funding pages directly rather than trusting a recycled list from an agency blog; schemes are renamed and resized almost every cycle.
二、Chevening 只覆盖硕士 / Why Chevening Is Out of Reach
Chevening is the name Chinese families hear most often, and also the one most often misread. It is funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and pays for a one-year master degree, with work experience required; applicants still at school or heading straight into a bachelor programme fall outside its remit. The window usually opens in late summer and closes in autumn, and the current rules live on the official Chevening site. Treating it as a backup for undergraduate funding simply costs a cycle.
三、GREAT 与英联邦项目 / GREAT and Commonwealth Schemes
GREAT Scholarships pools money from the GREAT Britain campaign, the British Council and participating universities, again mostly for one-year master courses, with subject and institution lists reshuffled each year. Commonwealth Scholarships look generous but require Commonwealth citizenship, which rules out Chinese applicants at every level. The Rhodes Scholarship funds postgraduate study at Oxford. These names keep appearing on the same internet lists, yet none of them overlaps with undergraduate funding; the eligibility paragraph is where the difference sits.
Where University Awards Live
The schemes worth your time belong to the universities themselves. Most Russell Group institutions keep an international undergraduate scholarship page, split by faculty, country or grade band. UCL Global Undergraduate Scholarship, Edinburgh Global Undergraduate Scholarship and Bristol Think Big awards are examples, and their names, quotas and values shift every admissions cycle, so the official page for the current year is the only version that counts. Navigate from the university homepage through Study, Fees and funding and Scholarships, then filter for undergraduate and international. Chinese-language pages are often a year or two behind the English original.
Three Ways the Money Arrives
Awards come in more shapes than the word scholarship suggests. Tuition waivers are the most common, ranging from a couple of thousand pounds a year to the full fee; fixed annual grants that offset accommodation or living costs come next; full packages covering fees plus maintenance are rare and usually number in single figures. Some universities frame the award as a fee discount rather than cash, which does not stop you applying for other funds. Read three clauses before celebrating: how many years it covers, whether it is renewed annually, and what happens after a fail or a change of course. Plenty of offers cover year one only, with renewal tied to a grade average.
What the Application Actually Asks For
University awards are either assessed automatically from your UCAS application or require a separate scholarship form. Where a form exists, expect a short statement of around 500 words asking how the money would change your studies; copying your personal statement fails here, because one explains why you want the subject and the other explains your circumstances, what you have already done and what comes after graduation. Some schemes ask for one reference, others none. The mistake that costs the most is waiting for an offer: scholarship deadlines often fall before decisions are released, sometimes alongside the main UCAS round.
Working Backwards from September
Working backwards makes the calendar manageable. September and October are for shortlisting schemes, confirming eligibility and drafting materials; the UCAS equal consideration deadline usually falls in mid-January, with the exact date published on the UCAS site each year; scholarship forms tend to close between January and March, and a few as early as December. Results arrive from March to May, and some universities notify funding separately from admission. Visa evidence depends on the CAS, which depends on an unconditional offer, so draft the financial documents in spring rather than in summer. Funding decisions frequently land a month after the offer, which is normal rather than a bad sign.
Grades Above the Offer
Scholarship thresholds sit above admission thresholds. A course asking for AAB may want AAA or A*AB from funding applicants, and a university that admits at IELTS 6.5 often lists 7.0 on its scholarship page. The gap is stated plainly in the eligibility section and just as plainly ignored. Some schemes weigh grades alone; others add the statement, an interview or household income. Interviews, where they exist, usually run online between February and April and last half an hour to forty minutes. Meeting your offer conditions is not the same as meeting the funding bar.
Country Awards and Department Money
A handful of universities run country-specific awards with China in the title, worth roughly one to five thousand pounds and usually assessed automatically without a separate form. Departmental money is more scattered: engineering, music and business schools each hold their own budget, the sums are smaller and so is the pool of applicants. This information rarely sits on a homepage; it hides on faculty scholarship pages. Alumni associations and foundations occasionally fund awards tied to a region, a subject or a donor preference. Small awards are easy to dismiss and easy to win.
Does Funding Affect the Offer
Admission and funding are handled by separate committees, and in most cases applying for money does not hurt your offer. Where an extra form is required, it simply gives the reader more material. A few universities require scholarship applicants to name them as first choice on UCAS, and the terms say so. If two offers come with funding attached, it is reasonable to tell one scholarship office what the other has offered; some adjust slightly, others state clearly that the figure is final. Treating the process as an auction tends to close doors.
Awards and the Visa File
How the money is paid shapes the visa file. Tuition waivers usually appear on the CAS, while maintenance support depends on whether the university pays it directly. Using an award as evidence means an official letter stating the amount, the period covered and the payment method; the gov.uk student visa guidance lists what counts. An award rarely covers the whole requirement, so the shortfall still has to sit in an account for the required period. Discovering that two weeks before submission is a familiar story.
Where Statements Lose Points
Three failures show up again and again in funding statements: a personal statement with a new opening paragraph, hardship described without evidence, and a paragraph about loving British education. Reviewers are asking whether the money gets you to graduation and whether anything concrete follows. Describe what you already do, the courses you taught yourself, the projects you finished, the responsibilities you carry at home; adjectives carry no weight. If the form asks whether you plan to return home, answer honestly, since an over-polished answer reads as evasive. The files that reach interview are usually not the highest grades but the clearest explanation of need.
