US universities do not run one scholarship application; the money sits inside a handful of specific screens in Common App plus each college's own funding portal. The 2026-27 cycle opened on 1 August 2026 for entry in autumn 2027, and a box ticked in August often decides whether an offer letter arrives with a funding letter attached. Students tend to treat financial aid as a conversation to have after admission, which explains why so many discover in December that a deadline passed in November. What follows maps each screen in the order a student meets it.
Common App's Financial Aid screen is one page of fixed questions asking whether you want need-based aid, roughly what your family can contribute, and whether you need a fee waiver; answering it only tells each college what you intend, and it never files a scholarship application for you. The real funding questions sit under each college's Questions tab, where some universities attach a 300-word statement on financial need and others attach one checkbox with a line of explanation. International applicants often read the section as something meant for domestic families and skip it, which shuts every funding route at that college at the same moment; once submitted, the page locks and reopening it means emailing the admissions office directly.
写 need-blind for all applicants 的才是真的不看,只写 need-blind for domestic students 的不算。
Colleges split into two groups on this question, and the wording on their own websites is the only reliable guide. A need-blind college reviews the file without reading the aid request, while a need-aware college weighs the request as part of the decision and does so most sharply for international applicants; phrasing such as need-blind for all applicants means what it says, whereas need-blind for domestic students leaves internationals outside the promise. Deciding to tick nothing because a counsellor warned that aid hurts admission throws away the need-blind schools too. Timing matters as well, since a need-aware college reads the request more strictly in Early Decision than in Regular Decision, so a family with a tight budget is usually safer spending ED on a genuinely need-blind campus.
CSS Profile
FAFSA is a federal form open only to US citizens and eligible non-citizens, so an applicant on an F-1 visa cannot complete it and the system will reject an attempt; the form internationals actually need is the CSS Profile, run by College Board and charged per college, with current fees listed on the College Board website. Not every college asks for it, since most public universities rely on their own institutional form or a short statement of finances while private universities lean on the Profile far more heavily. Mixing the two up is the single most common paperwork failure, and it ends with the college holding no financial document at all while the student believes the aid application is finished. Deadlines usually match the admission deadline, sometimes two weeks later, and the dates belong to each college's own Financial Aid page rather than to any guide written in a previous cycle.
Merit money arrives in two different ways and the difference decides how much work a student must do. Public universities usually assess candidates automatically from weighted GPA, course rigour and test scores, so the award simply appears in the offer letter; private universities often tie their largest awards to a separate honors college application with its own essay and reference. Some state universities set a scholarship consideration deadline in early December, a month before the regular round, and a late file is still admitted but drops into the pool with no money attached. Grades entered in Common App are self-reported and later checked against official transcripts, so a figure inflated for appearance gets the award withdrawn at verification, while a missed checkbox is never restored on the student's behalf.
The autumn cycle clusters its first deadlines around 1 November, when Early Action and Early Decision files are due and funding documents travel with them; the second cluster falls near 1 December, which is where most public universities put scholarship consideration and where several private universities put their priority aid deadline. Rolling admission colleges read in the order files complete, so early applicants sit ahead of everyone in the funding queue and late ones wait for others to decline. Documents matter more than the submit button, because references, school transcripts and score sends each take time and international courier plus credential verification slow down noticeably in November. Build the two weeks of slack into the calendar and treat score sends as separate tasks rather than something to chase on the final afternoon.
Fee waivers in Common App are confirmed inside the system by a school counsellor or a financial aid officer, and international applicants normally use the international waiver route while some colleges run a separate institutional form. Without approval the fee is charged at whatever rate the college publishes on its own application fee page. Apply for the waiver before submitting, since the option disappears from the interface once a file is in and the only route back is a manual email to admissions. Scanned transcripts need to be legible down to subject names and grades, and a financial statement without a signature gets bounced and costs another week in the queue.
A few universities never appear in Common App, and their funding process moves to a different system with its own calendar. The University of California's nine undergraduate campuses run the UC Application, where the aid side opens as a separate portal after submission and closes on a date unrelated to the admission deadline; MIT keeps its own MyMIT portal and splits the funding paperwork into stages before and after admission, while Georgetown likewise runs an institutional application with its aid instructions on its own pages. What students miss at these schools is not an essay but the entrance itself, because a schedule built around Common App makes everything feel finished. Checking each target against the Common App member list, and building a separate reminder for anything absent from it, closes that gap.
The funding calendar starts in the first week of August, when the Financial Aid screen is completed and every later aid question depends on that answer. September is for auditing the college list, separating the CSS Profile colleges and sending the Profile to each of them through College Board. October settles the round, with need-blind colleges taking the Early Decision slot and need-aware ones reserved for families who can pay without aid. Files go in on 1 November with references and transcripts confirmed the same day, the December scholarship consideration materials follow in the first week of that month, income documents arrive in January, and results plus any appeal land between February and March.
Funding decisions normally travel with the offer, though some colleges send them one to three weeks later and finalise the need-based portion only after a student accepts a place. Comparing offers means comparing net cost, which is tuition minus grants and scholarships, since loans and campus work do not reduce what a family pays. An appeal is possible where the numbers do not fit, and it works best with specific documents such as a changed income, medical costs or a redundancy notice attached to a short written explanation rather than a series of phone calls. Success rates differ by college and the accepted grounds are usually spelled out on the aid appeal page of the college's own site, so the practical step is laying every funding letter side by side before accepting and reading the four-year cost rather than the headline award.
