Common App 2026-2027

Common App opens each cycle on 1 August, and the 2026-2027 first-year application keeps the same seven prompts: choose one, then write between 250 and 650 words. Picking a prompt has less to do with which option sounds impressive than with which one matches evidence you can actually produce, and most international applicants end up with three or four realistic candidates. This piece works through each prompt as it appears on the Common App website, then covers the activity list, the additional information box and the checks that most often get missed. A school-specific supplement is a separate assignment and should be drafted on its own terms.

Three limits are fixed by the platform rather than by any school: one prompt, a 250-word floor and a 650-word ceiling, with the text box cutting whatever runs past it. Word counts include hyphenated forms and any short quotation you build in. Applicants who write to the ceiling usually pad, which is the wrong instinct; a 500-word draft where every sentence advances the story outperforms a 640-word draft carrying three paragraphs of setup. Drafting to roughly 700 words and then removing the explanatory second sentence of each paragraph tends to land in range.

Which part of your background, identity, interest or talent is so central that the application would feel incomplete without it, and how did it take hold: that is the question. It reads as the most permissive prompt and turns out to be the easiest to flatten into a CV with paragraphs. Readers want a scene with a time, a place, other people and an action you took, because a label such as eldest daughter or olympiad finalist produces no image on its own. Put the scene in the first sentence and let the background arrive through what you did.

A setback, failure or challenge, its effect on you, and what you learned: this prompt rewards admissions of error. The risk is not writing about failure, it is writing a failure that belongs to somebody else. Readers check first whether you name a judgement you got wrong, then whether the correction is specific enough to be repeatable. A modest event, three weeks of unsubmitted work or a plan abandoned the night before a competition, works better than a grand collapse, provided the decision point is visible.

The third prompt asks about a time you questioned or challenged a belief, what prompted it and what came of it. International applicants have real material here, since moving between school systems generates genuine friction, but the essay often collapses into a debate speech. What readers want is the path: the original view, the event that made it wobble, what you read or whom you asked, and where you landed. A partial revision, keeping part of the old position and dropping the rest, tends to read as more honest than a clean conversion.

Describe a problem you have solved or would like to solve, whether intellectual, research-based or ethical. Process matters more than the answer being right, so the steps need to be specific enough for a reader to check: what you tried first, where it stalled, what you changed, who supplied the hint that unlocked it. Essays that spend their length on results read as summaries of somebody else work. Leaving in the two failed attempts is what separates a real account from a constructed one, and an unresolved problem can work if the current sticking point is named.

An accomplishment or event that marked a transition to adulthood, together with why it matters, is the fifth option. The why is the whole essay, and it is the part most applicants leave empty. Writing about a prize turns the piece into a repeat of the activity list, while a specific turn, such as the first time you ran a five-person project and nobody followed your schedule, gives the reader something to hold. What counts is the role you carried, not the size of the stage.

The sixth prompt is the loosest of the seven: a topic, idea or concept you find so engaging that you lose track of time, why it holds you, and whom you turn to when you want to go deeper. Curiosity needs a location, so a narrow question explored far beats five subjects listed in sequence. A useful test is whether the essay contains a concrete act of inquiry, a book you hunted down, a teacher you stopped after class, a dataset you rebuilt because the published version looked wrong. Without one of those, the piece tends to stay at the level of nouns.

The seventh prompt lets you supply the question, which makes it a repair option rather than an easy one. Before choosing it, confirm that none of the six fixed prompts can hold your material, instead of using it to escape a constraint you dislike. Keep your own question to a single sentence and then write at the density of the other prompts, since the structure is now entirely yours and a weak draft shows more clearly. Vague value statements at the top with an unrelated anecdote underneath are the usual failure.

Outside the essay, the activity list takes ten entries at 150 characters each, and the honours section takes five. That character budget is about a sentence and a half, which leaves no room for adjectives and just enough for verbs and numbers. Order by significance rather than chronology, because readers start at the top and decide quickly whether to continue. Naming the full title of a club can consume a third of the space; hours per week, people supervised and a measurable outcome earn their characters instead.

The additional information box allows 250 words and exists to explain what a transcript cannot: a transfer, a family disruption, a course your school does not offer, a term with an unexplained dip. It is not a second essay and filling it does not add credit. Before submitting, confirm that recommenders have accepted their invitations, that your school has sent the transcript, that each deadline is read in the school own time zone, and that the fee or waiver is settled. Once you submit, the essay locks and only the admissions office can reopen it.
