OCR GCSE
Topic P3 of OCR Physics A (J249) splits into P3.1 Static and charge and P3.2 Simple circuits, and both tiers are examined on it. The arithmetic in this topic is rarely the problem; the marks disappear in wording, graph shapes and unit conversions. The thirteen points below follow the specification statements rather than a textbook chapter order.
Charge is treated as a property that all matter already has, not something a rubbed surface manufactures. Positive protons sit in the nucleus and negative electrons surround it, and a body with matching counts is neutral. When an object becomes positive it has lost electrons rather than gained protons, and that single sentence is what most static electricity answers get wrong.
Rubbing two different insulators moves electrons from one surface to the other, so both objects end up charged although neither started that way. The specification states plainly that static charge builds up only on insulators, which explains why a metal rod held in the hand loses its charge to earth while the same rod on an insulating handle keeps it. A charged strip swinging near a second rod, with air still between them, is the evidence for a non-contact force that examiners look for.
Statement P3.1c asks for an explanation, so the safe structure names the two insulators, states that electrons cross from one surface to the other, and then assigns the signs. The object that gains electrons becomes negative and the one that loses them becomes positive, in equal amounts, because electrons have only been moved. Stopping at the phrase static electricity gives the examiner nothing to credit even when the physics behind it is sound.
Electric fields appear in P3.1d, printed in bold in the specification so that only the Higher tier papers test it. The field is the region around a charged object where another charge feels a force, and field lines point the way a positive charge would be pushed. Drawing the lines closer together to show a stronger field is the convention the semolina and castor oil demonstration is designed to make visible.
Current is defined as the rate of flow of charge, carried by electrons, and charge only flows when a source of potential difference is joined to a closed circuit. P3.1f then fixes the current at the same value everywhere in a single closed loop, so a reading taken before a lamp matches the reading after it. Expecting the current to be used up inside a component is the misconception OCR flags for this topic, and an ammeter connected in parallel instead of series ruins the measurement.
6. Q = It 的计算与单位换算
The relationship is printed on the equation sheet as Q = It, with charge in coulombs, current in amperes and time in seconds, and P3.1g requires it to be used rather than recited. A current of 2 A for 30 s transfers 60 C, while a 0.5 A lamp left on for ten minutes gives 300 C once the time becomes 600 s. The mark is normally lost on that conversion, so carrying units through every line protects the working.
7. 电位差、电阻与 V = IR
Potential difference measures the energy transferred per unit charge, one volt being one joule per coulomb, while resistance measures how strongly a component opposes current. P3.2d requires V = IR to be recalled and applied in both directions, so a larger resistance at the same p.d. gives a smaller current. A filament lamp breaks the pattern because the filament heats up and its resistance rises, which is why a straight line through the origin belongs only to an ohmic conductor held at constant temperature.
Statements P3.2e and P3.2h are about reading behaviour off a graph rather than memorising shapes. An ohmic conductor gives a straight line through the origin, a filament lamp curves as its resistance climbs with temperature, and a diode conducts in one direction only with a very high resistance when the p.d. is reversed. Six to eight readings for a curved characteristic is the practical detail that decides whether the shape can honestly be drawn.
P3.2f expects an explanation of why an NTC thermistor or an LDR is wired into a circuit, and the answer starts with the direction of the change. The thermistor's resistance falls as temperature rises, the LDR's resistance falls as light intensity rises, and the surrounding circuit converts either change into a current or a voltage that can operate a switch. Reversing that trend is a cheap way to lose the whole question.
Series circuits offer one path only, so the current is common to every component while the potential differences add up to the supply value. Adding a second resistor in series raises the net resistance and lowers the current from the same supply, which is the qualitative point P3.2i asks for. P3.2j and P3.2m then require the numbers to be worked through with an equivalent resistance, and putting the known values on the diagram first prevents most arithmetic slips.
In a parallel circuit each branch is connected across the supply, so every branch carries the full supply potential difference and the current divides at the junctions. The net resistance ends up smaller than the smallest single resistor because the charge has more than one route, and P3.2i asks for that reasoning rather than a formula. Treating a parallel network as series and splitting the voltage is the error that turns up most often in scripts.
公式表给了三条:P = VI、P = I²R、E = Pt,另有 E = QV 把电荷与能量联系起来。
P3.2l links power transfer to potential difference, current and the energy change over a period of time. The equation sheet supplies P = VI, P = I²R and E = Pt, with E = QV connecting charge and energy, so a 230 V kettle drawing 8.7 A works at roughly 2000 W and uses about 200000 J in 100 s. Forgetting to square the current in P = I²R moves the answer by an order of magnitude, and checking units at the end catches most of those losses.
Q = It、V = IR、E = QV、P = VI、P = I²R、E = Pt
Paper 1 is the Foundation paper and Paper 3 the Higher one, both covering P1 to P4 plus P9 at 90 marks in 1 hour 45 minutes for half of the GCSE. Papers 2 and 4 cover P5 to P8 but assume knowledge of P1 to P4, so electricity ideas reappear inside waves and energy questions. The four-page equation sheet lists Q = It, V = IR, E = QV, P = VI, P = I²R and E = Pt, which leaves substitution, conversion and choosing the right relationship as the real skills being tested.
