Poetry is usually the part of English that makes a Year 7 to Year 9 class go quiet; short lines look easy until someone asks what the poet is doing, and then the answer arrives as a list of devices with no argument attached. A more reliable habit is to treat a poem as layers you can check one at a time, who is speaking, which form frames the speech, where the sentences break, and what the sounds do to the meaning. The 2013 key stage 3 English programme of study, statutory from September 2014, asks pupils to recognise a range of poetic conventions and understand how they have been used, and that sentence is effectively the plan for everything below.
Read a poem three times before writing a single note, and give each reading a separate job; the first pass is for story and setting, the second is out loud, and the third is layout. Listening matters more than it sounds, because line breaks and pauses only register when the words pass through your mouth, and that is where the evidence for rhythm comes from. Students who skip straight to naming devices end up with a page of terms and no claim about the poem, which is exactly what costs marks later on.
The I in a poem is a construction rather than a confession; Browning's My Last Duchess is spoken by a duke describing a portrait, and his calm tone sits oddly against what he admits doing. Ask what the speaker knows, who is being addressed, and which words are chosen for that listener, since those three details usually fix the distance between poet and voice. Reading the speaker's opinions as the poet's own is the mistake that makes an otherwise careful paragraph collapse.
Form is the first promise a poem makes: narrative promises events, lyric promises a mood, the sonnet promises fourteen lines, and the dramatic monologue promises a character talking to a silent listener. Once you name the form you can also name the expectation it creates; free verse keeps no metre or rhyme scheme, so the line breaks have to carry the rhythm instead. Look for the moment a poem bends its own form, because the bend is usually where the argument sits.
Structure is about arrangement rather than summary: count the stanzas, check whether their lengths mirror each other, and mark the line where the argument turns. Enjambment pushes a sentence past the line end so the reader hurries on, while an end-stopped line does the opposite and hardens the tone. In a Petrarchan sonnet the turn usually arrives at line nine, with eight lines setting up a problem and six answering it, and pointing to that hinge is worth far more than announcing that the poem has four stanzas.
Metre is a pattern of stresses, and iambic pentameter gives five stresses and ten syllables per line, close enough to ordinary speech for Shakespeare to use it on stage for hours at a time. You do not need to scan every syllable; read the line aloud, hear which words take the beat, and check whether those words carry the meaning. A broken pattern matters because the extra stress lands hard, while free verse manages a similar effect through line length and sentence shape instead.
A rhyme scheme is written as ABAB or ABBA and records which line endings repeat a sound; a couplet rhymes two neighbouring lines and often closes a stanza with a snap. Half rhyme keeps only part of the sound, which is why Owen used it throughout Strange Meeting and left that encounter between two soldiers sounding unresolved. Reporting the scheme without saying what the sound does is the commonest empty sentence in a KS3 poetry essay.
Imagery means the concrete things a poem lets you see, hear or touch, and a metaphor works by claiming one thing is another rather than merely resembling it. Test a comparison by naming the exact quality the two things share, then check whether that quality still holds two lines later, because an extended metaphor has to survive its own length. Saying a simile is vivid explains nothing, whereas naming what the vehicle and the subject actually share does.
Personification lends human action or feeling to something non-human, while reification strips a person down to an object or a machine. Ruskin named the pathetic fallacy in the third volume of Modern Painters in 1856 for the habit of reading human emotion into landscape, and the label still earns its place because it forces you to ask whose feeling is being described. Both devices change the temperature of a poem quickly, so the useful question is always what has been handed over or taken away.
Sound covers alliteration, sibilance, assonance and onomatopoeia, and each one is easier to hear than to define. Alliteration repeats initial consonants, sibilance runs s and sh sounds together like friction, and plosives such as p and b give a line a knock; circle the repeated sounds and see which lines they cluster in. Do not overread every cluster, since English produces accidental alliteration constantly, and tie the sound back to the sense before you comment on it.
Word choice starts with connotation, the associations a word drags in beyond its dictionary meaning, which is why walked, paced and slunk are not interchangeable. A semantic field is the shared territory a group of words occupies, so repeated frost, ice and cold tilt the whole poem towards a lower temperature. Register matters as well, since a slang word dropped into a formal sentence creates distance or mockery, and swapping the word for a synonym is the quickest test of whether your point holds.
Tone is the speaker's attitude towards what is being said, while mood is what the reader is left feeling, and mixing the two muddles most answers. Track tone through verb strength, punctuation, forms of address and any sudden short sentence, then check whether the literal words and the intended meaning pull apart, which is where irony lives. Locating a shift in tone at a specific line is far more convincing than describing the whole poem as sad.
A workable paragraph moves through four steps: a claim, a short quotation, a named device, and an account of how that device changes the meaning. Keep quotations to three or six words, because a long one leaves no room for the analysis that earns the mark. Examiners reward an argument about effect rather than a list of terminology, and the AQA 8702 specification places poetry in Paper 2, which runs for 2 hours 15 minutes and carries 60 per cent of the qualification, so choosing what to leave out is part of the skill.
