AQA GCSE Business
Operations sits inside Paper 1 alongside the business world, external influences and human resources, which means the textbook can make it look like common sense while the paper asks for something harder. Candidates are expected to separate one method from another, then apply the distinction to a named firm with its own numbers. Most of the lost marks sit in that second step, not in the definitions. The four sub-topics below follow section 3.3 of AQA's Specification 8132, and each one carries a sentence that can be lifted straight into a case response.
Paper 1 runs for 1 hour 45 minutes and carries 90 marks, half of the whole qualification. Section A holds 20 marks of multiple choice and short answers; Section B and Section C each attach about thirty-odd marks to a case study stimulus, so operations never appears as a topic on its own. A candidate who has memorised the definition of lean production collects the easy marks and then stalls on the follow-up asking whether a named firm should change its method. The marks sit in that second move, where the method has to meet the firm's output, order book and return rate.
AQA lists job and flow production in 3.3.1, and although several revision guides add batch production, the content column of the specification does not, so it is safer not to invent a third method. Job production builds one unit at a time to a customer's requirement, which pushes unit cost and lead time up but suits wedding cakes, bespoke furniture and stage sets. Flow production runs a standardised line with high volume and low unit cost, paid for through heavy capital spending and a painful changeover when the design moves; the choice between them turns on order size, how standard the product is, and what customers will pay for customisation. Many students assume flow is simply the more advanced option, yet a run of twenty bespoke items on a line can lose the whole margin to set-up time.
3.3.1 把效率单列一行,写的是 lean production 与 just in time。
Section 3.3.1 gives efficiency a row of its own and names lean production together with just in time. Lean is the wider idea, aimed at the movements inside a process that add no value, such as waiting, double handling, rework and over-production; JIT is one arrangement made under that idea, in which materials arrive as they are needed and the warehouse holds almost nothing. Revision notes often flip the two around, treating lean as a technique and JIT as the strategy, when the target is lean and JIT is a means. A case answer that starts from the lean logic and then lands on a delivery schedule earns more than a line about cutting waste.
Managing stock in 3.3.2 puts JIT beside JIC, and the specification's own note is blunt about the trade-off: the saving on storage has to be weighed against more frequent deliveries and the loss of purchasing economies of scale. JIT keeps stock low, so warehousing cost and obsolescence risk fall, but a single late supplier stops the line; JIC holds buffer stock that protects against shortages and absorbs a surprise order, at the price of tied-up cash and write-downs on out-of-date lines. Candidates score by putting both sides in numbers rather than announcing that JIT is cheaper. A fresh food business with fast stock turnover fits JIT, while a gift retailer needs JIC before Christmas, and that judgement rests on how predictable demand really is.
Price alone is the beginner's shortcut, while 3.3.2 sets out price, quality and reliability, and a full answer touches all three. A cheap supplier with a high defect rate hands back the saving through rework and returns, and an unreliable one damages the customer relationship far beyond the purchase price once delivery dates slip. In a case, the ranking depends on what the firm sells: a medical device maker puts quality first, a seasonal promotions business puts reliability first, and a maker of standard components can let price lead. The common error is listing the three factors and stopping there, without saying which one dominates for this particular business.
Procurement is about buying the right input and logistics is about moving it to the right place on time, and the specification ties both to greater efficiency and lower unit costs. Bulk buying lowers the unit price, consolidated delivery cuts empty running and duplicate trips, and sharing a production plan with a supplier removes the overtime that panic orders create; good supply chain management goes further, reworking processes jointly so lead times shorten. Answers have to convert that into figures: pence saved per unit, days taken out of the lead time, cash released from stock. A paragraph that only says efficiency improves tends to sit in the lower band. Supplier numbers matter too, since a single source allows deep collaboration while several sources spread the risk of disruption.
Section 3.3.3 opens with the consequences of quality problems, moves to methods of keeping quality consistent, and closes with costs and benefits. Quality control inspects finished output and pulls out the defective units, which is checking after the event; quality assurance builds the standard into each stage so the fault is stopped before it exists, costing more in training and process change but cutting rework over time. Where complaints cluster around failures after despatch, a case answer that proposes process redesign beats one that adds another inspection point. Poor quality also reaches revenue through recalls, damaged reputation and delisted products, not only through refunds.
Total quality management is the one method named in 3.3.3, and it hands quality responsibility to every role, letting front-line staff stop a process when they spot a defect while managers track defect rates and improve continuously. It suits repetitive processes, and services can use it as well, with a restaurant chain turning serving time, cleaning checks and complaint response into workable standards that the store manager reviews each week. Service quality carries an extra difficulty, because it depends on whoever is on shift, so even a detailed standard produces variation. The specification's note that outsourcing and franchising make quality harder to control is worth quoting whenever a case features a chain expanding fast.
The costs and benefits row in 3.3.3 is unusually concrete, listing inspection, staff training, product recalls and service provision against extra sales, a stronger image and the ability to charge a higher price. The arithmetic runs in both directions: inspection and training are recurring costs, while a recall is a single large hit that drags distribution and public relations along with it. Once quality is stable a firm can lift its price, since customers pay for reliability, and that premium is the part answers forget. A case asking whether to buy testing equipment is answered by comparing the annual cost with the returns, recalls and compensation it should prevent, then adding the pricing headroom.
Section 3.3.4 splits good service into product knowledge, customer engagement and post-sales service, where the first decides whether staff can answer the key question in thirty seconds, the second shapes how a customer feels on the way out, and the third covers user training, helplines and servicing. Miss one and the experience breaks at that point, which is why an electrical retailer with a slow service line loses customers no matter how good the shop floor feels. Match the method to the product: fast-moving low-value goods lean on engagement and speed, while expensive durables lean on after-sales expertise. Write the three actions first, then trace them to satisfaction, repeat purchase and profit.
The dangers of poor service in 3.3.4 run through dissatisfied customers, reputational damage spread by word of mouth, and lower revenue, a chain that social platforms compress into hours, since one bad after-sales exchange can become a public post that prospects meet first. Websites, e-commerce and social media also give service new surfaces, from order tracking to online chat and replies in a review thread, and response time becomes a figure customers can compare. A business that only serves people inside the shop and ignores its online reviews is understating what it loses. Lay the path out in the answer: one complaint, several retellings, a crowd of hesitant buyers, and finally a smaller order book.
Longer operations questions can all follow one skeleton: a judgement in a single sentence on whether the firm should change, reasons that tie the method to specific facts from the case, such as orders rising from two hundred to eight hundred a month so that flow production can spread its fixed costs, then a weighing of what the advice costs in lost output during changeover and retraining time. Without the judgement the answer is only a list of terms, and without the weighing the evaluation marks stay out of reach. Scripts that reword the textbook and mention the case once at the end tend to sit in the middle band. Naming the firm's own figures and dates inside each reason is what moves a response up.
