CAS completes the DP core next to theory of knowledge and the extended essay, and it is the only element that is never scored. The IBO guide asks for regular involvement, ideally every week, across a minimum of 18 months with a reasonable balance between the three strands, so a programme that starts in the final term has very little room to recover. Schools that handle this well treat the start date as a planning decision and map the strands across both years before students commit to anything.
CAS is the only core element that is never scored, yet the diploma depends on it. The guide asks for regular involvement, ideally every week, over a minimum of 18 months, with a balance across creativity, activity and service that the coordinator can actually see in the portfolio. Students who compress everything into the last term usually end up with isolated events and reflections written from memory, which is exactly where the evidence starts to look thin.
Creativity
Creativity is judged by what a student produces rather than by what they consume, which is why a concert ticket never satisfies this strand. The guide lists visual and performing arts, digital design, writing, film, culinary work, crafts and composition, and it expects participants to move beyond the level they already reached comfortably. A finished object on its own is weak evidence; the drafts, the abandoned versions and the reasons behind each change are what make a portfolio entry convincing to a reader who was not there.
Activity
Activity means physical exertion that contributes to a healthy lifestyle, and competitive success has nothing to do with whether it counts. The guide also asks schools to make provision for students whose circumstances, culture or disability affect participation, so the strand rewards sustained effort rather than a particular sport or a place on the podium. Training logs, match records and changes in fitness data give a coordinator something concrete to read, while a single charity run gives almost nothing.
Service
Service is collaborative and reciprocal engagement with a community in response to an authentic need, and the guide is explicit that it must be unpaid. Determining the need is the hard part, because the question is what a partner organisation requires, not what a student finds interesting; a class collection handed over without any contact rarely survives scrutiny. Investigation first, then a plan agreed with the partner, then action, then an evaluation written by the people who were served.
Four guidelines decide whether an activity qualifies, and failing any one of them removes it from CAS entirely. It has to fit at least one strand, grow out of a genuine interest, skill, talent or opportunity for growth, offer a chance to develop the attributes of the IB learner profile, and stay separate from the requirements of a DP course. The last condition catches more students than the other three combined, because a field trip report or a graded artwork feels like CAS until someone checks where the marks came from.
Completion rests on seven learning outcomes rather than on hours, and each one needs evidence at least once. They cover recognising personal strengths and areas for growth, taking on new challenges and acquiring skills, initiating and planning an experience, showing commitment and perseverance, working collaboratively, engaging with issues of global significance, and considering the ethics of choices and actions. Selecting two or three outcomes at the start of a project and adding the rest as they appear reads far better than assembling all seven in the final month.
The five CAS stages run from investigation and preparation through action to reflection and demonstration, and they work as a planning template as much as a record. Investigation identifies the interest and the need, preparation fixes roles, resources, timelines and any skills that must be acquired first, and action is where the plan meets reality. A single experience may skip stages, but a CAS project is expected to move through all five, which is why the template is worth filling in before anything starts.
CAS project
A CAS project is a collaborative series of sequential experiences lasting at least one month from planning to completion, and the collaboration is the point rather than a formality. Teams can be made up of students, community members or both, but every participant has to contribute something real, because the guide ties the project to sustained teamwork and shared decision making. Recording the plan, the mid-point revision and the closing evaluation takes ten minutes each time and is the difference between a project and a busy weekend.
Reflection carries CAS, and the guide breaks it into four moves: describing what happened, expressing feelings, generating ideas and asking questions. The first two give an account of the experience, while the second two turn it into learning by re-examining choices and pushing the inquiry further. A page of feelings without analysis leaves the coordinator unable to judge any outcome, so a single concrete scene, such as the first session where nobody followed your instructions, is worth more than a paragraph of adjectives.
CAS portfolio
The portfolio is a collection of evidence rather than a set of essays, and the guide accepts blogs, written journals, artwork, compositions, annotated photo diaries and audio or video diaries. Format is flexible, but a reader who was not present has to be able to follow what happened, what the student did and what changed; unsorted photographs with no captions fail that test. Two or three lines under each item, naming the date, the role and the result, save hours of explanation later.
Three documented interviews structure the programme: one at the start, one at the end of the first year and one at the end. The first settles interests, goals and the form the portfolio will take, the second reviews progress and balance, and the third checks that evidence for all seven outcomes exists. Arriving with a specific example and a screenshot beats explaining that things have been busy, because the coordinator's judgement is built on those records rather than on impressions.
The 2015 guide sets no minimum number of hours, and completion is judged on evidence for the seven outcomes; where a school still publishes an hour target, that is a local rule rather than an IBO requirement. Donations are not service on their own, coursework renamed is still coursework, and creativity is not limited to the arts, since coding, writing, cooking and craft all belong to the strand. Getting these four points straight at the start prevents most of the rewriting that happens in the final term.
