Start with the elements, not the name. A metal combined with a non-metal usually signals ionic bonding, two non-metals point to covalent bonding, and a metal on its own means metallic bonding. The shortcut handles most WJEC short-answer questions, but it is an entry point rather than a conclusion. Aluminium chloride is the standard counterexample: the high charge density of the aluminium ion polarises the chloride ion strongly enough that the compound exists as covalent dimers and sublimes near 180 degrees Celsius instead of melting above 800 like a typical ionic lattice. When the data look unusual, follow the covalent line of reasoning.
Sodium loses an electron and chlorine gains one, and the resulting ions pack into a three-dimensional lattice held together by electrostatic attraction in a fixed ratio. Dot-and-cross diagrams are expected to carry square brackets and ionic charges; a single sodium and a single chlorine miss the point, since the question is about structure and the repeating arrangement is what earns the mark. Definitions must contain electrostatic attraction explicitly. Answers that only say opposite charges attract tend to lose half the credit.
More ions does not mean a higher melting point; lattice energy does the work. Lattice energy rises with ionic charge and falls as ionic radius grows, which is why magnesium oxide melts near 2852 degrees Celsius while sodium chloride melts at 801. Doubling both charges multiplies the electrostatic attraction roughly fourfold. Write the chain out: higher charge and smaller radius, stronger attraction, more energy needed to break the lattice, higher melting point. Down a group the ions get larger, lattice energy drops and melting points follow.
A solid ionic compound does not conduct because its ions are locked in the lattice. Once melted or dissolved, those ions become mobile and carry charge. The common mistake is treating the presence of ions as sufficient for conduction while ignoring mobility. WJEC practical questions often supply conductivity data for the same substance in several states, and the solid-versus-liquid contrast is the clue you are meant to use. Address each state separately rather than writing one blanket sentence.
A covalent bond is a shared pair of electrons and it is strong, while the forces between separate molecules are weak. Many students assume a low boiling point means weak covalent bonds. What breaks on boiling is the intermolecular force, and the covalent bond survives intact. Iodine boils around 184 degrees Celsius and carbon dioxide sublimes at atmospheric pressure for exactly this reason. Keep within-the-molecule and between-molecules separate in your answer; that distinction separates a mid-grade response from a top one.
In diamond every carbon bonds to four others in a tetrahedral network of covalent bonds, which produces extreme hardness, a melting point around 3500 degrees Celsius measured under pressure, and no conductivity because every valence electron is tied up in bonding. Graphite is layered: each carbon bonds to three neighbours and the fourth valence electron is delocalised, so graphite conducts, while the weakly held layers slide over one another, which makes it a lubricant and a pencil core material. Same element, very different properties, and the marks sit in the structural description.
Metal cations sit at lattice points while their valence electrons delocalise into an electron sea spread across the whole crystal. That one model explains three properties at once: conduction, because electrons drift under a potential difference; heat conduction, because they transfer kinetic energy; and malleability, because layers slide past each other without snapping directional bonds. The absence of directionality is the deepest difference from covalent bonding and the reason metals can be hammered into sheets and drawn into wire.
Adding atoms of a different radius disrupts the regular layered arrangement, so the layers no longer slide easily and the alloy ends up harder and stronger; steel is iron with carbon and brass is copper with zinc. Those same foreign atoms scatter electrons, which usually pushes conductivity slightly below that of the pure metal. WJEC often links this to material choice, asking why wiring uses pure copper while structural work uses steel. Cover both directions, hardness and conductivity, or you leave marks on the table.
Rank substances by classifying first: ionic, giant covalent, metallic, simple molecular. The first three are solids at room temperature with melting points usually in the hundreds or higher, while simple molecules melt low and are often gases. Within a class, compare ionic charge and radius, or cationic charge and radius for metals, and compare intermolecular forces for simple molecules, where larger molecules with more electrons experience stronger dispersion forces. The mistake is pitching a covalent bond inside a molecule against the lattice energy of an ionic solid; they are not comparable quantities.
Ask three things in order: are there charged particles that can move, are they free to move in the state described, and only then state the conclusion. Metals conduct in the solid state; ionic compounds conduct when molten or dissolved but not as solids; giant covalent substances other than graphite do not conduct; simple molecules do not conduct. Graphite is the non-metal that conducts as a solid, and delocalised electrons are the explanation the mark scheme wants rather than the word special.
Like dissolves like is a rule of thumb at this level. Ionic solids mostly dissolve in water because polar water molecules form ion-dipole interactions strong enough to pull the lattice apart, and they stay out of non-polar solvents. The rule has exceptions: barium sulfate is effectively insoluble and calcium carbonate is barely soluble, because the lattice energy is too large for hydration to compensate. Follow the data when the question supplies it, state the trend when it does not, and never invent a number to sound precise.
Dot-and-cross diagrams are marked on three things: the correct number of outer-shell electrons for each atom, shared pairs placed in the overlap region, and square brackets with charges for ions. Lone pairs are checked as well, and the two lone pairs on oxygen in a water molecule are routinely dropped. Drawing a double bond as two separate single bonds is another recurring deduction; carbon dioxide has two shared pairs between carbon and each oxygen. Using crosses for one atom and dots for the other shows the marker where each electron came from.
Unit 2
WJEC GCSE Chemistry is split into three units, with Unit 1 and Unit 2 worth 45 per cent each and Unit 3, the practical assessment, worth 10 per cent; bonding sits at the start of Unit 2 in the specification first taught from 2016 and first assessed in 2018. Wales still uses A* to G grades rather than the 9 to 1 scale used in England, so grade boundaries from English boards are not directly comparable. Sequence your revision by mastering structure classification and property explanation first, because those sentence patterns reappear in metal extraction, electrolysis and organic chemistry later in the course.
Two question types repay practice. One supplies data on melting point, conductivity and solubility and asks you to identify the bonding and explain it, which means every data point needs its own structural reason rather than a bare conclusion. The other gives structures and asks you to rank properties, usually with diamond, graphite, iodine and sodium chloride in one list. Drill the sentence patterns for both; copying the structure-therefore-property chain into your notes after each attempt pays off more than rereading definitions.
