UCAS Clearing
Clearing is the one part of the UK admissions cycle where hours matter, not weeks. The vacancies are real, and so is the narrowness of the window. This piece works through the timeline, eligibility, the order of operations, and the extra step that international applicants must plan for.
Clearing
Clearing is the summer window in which universities advertise courses that still have places, and applicants apply to them directly. UCAS listed more than thirty thousand courses during the 2026 cycle, which is a volume that surprises people who picture Clearing as a handful of unfilled seats. The reasons behind those vacancies are ordinary: declined offers, missed conditions, and late changes of plan. Places are allocated department by department, so a course short of three students has to find exactly three more before the timetable is built. Selective universities release places too, usually in smaller numbers and later in the summer, which is why the official search tool is worth rechecking rather than trusting what friends report.
The 2026 cycle ran from 2 July to 19 October, and UCAS separates two deadlines that are easy to confuse. Applicants could add a Clearing choice until 19 October, while institutions had until 21 October to record their decisions, so the final days belong to providers rather than to applicants. Anyone applying after 18:00 on 30 June was placed into Clearing automatically. Results arrive in stages, with Scottish qualifications on 4 August 2026, A levels and T Levels on 13 August, and GCSEs on 20 August, which pushes the busiest fortnight into mid-August rather than early July. For the following cycle, read the dates on the current UCAS page instead of reusing last year's calendar.
Four groups can use Clearing, and the list is wider than most applicants assume. Anyone applying after 30 June is placed there automatically, and the same applies to people holding no offers at all or only offers they do not want. Applicants who missed the conditions of a conditional offer are eligible as well, and so are those holding an unconditional place who would rather move elsewhere and release themselves through the button in their application. UCAS sets out the wording for each case on its own site, and reading it once is more reliable than second-hand advice. Knowing which category describes you decides whether the first move on results day is a phone call or an edit to the application.
Order matters on results day more than effort does. Check the status inside your application first, because the wording tells you whether you are confirmed, still conditional, or released, and each one leads somewhere different. Once you know, copy course codes from the official vacancy search rather than calling a faculty blind. Admissions lines are busiest in the morning, yet places are offered as calls arrive, so a prepared caller at nine usually has more room to negotiate than a hesitant one at noon. A frequent mistake is adding a choice online and then waiting for a reply, by which point the place has often gone to somebody who rang.
Applicants who beat their offer can trade up, but only through self-release. UCAS retired Adjustment after the 2021 cycle, so the working mechanism is now the decline my place button inside the application. Before pressing it, understand the trade: the firm place disappears immediately and nothing guarantees a replacement, which is why advisers suggest a call and a verbal yes first. Timing adds its own risk, since the system updates slowly on the busiest day of the year and a double click can leave you staring at a blank status. Anyone holding both a firm and an insurance offer should decide what happens to the second one before releasing anything.
Clearing choice
Only one Clearing choice can be held at a time, and this rule catches people every August. The university has to agree before the choice is added, and only the applicant can add it, not a parent and not a school counsellor. A place becomes real when the institution records its decision, so an unanswered choice blocks the next one and quietly costs days. Clearing Plus suggestions inside the application are prompts to ring, not offers, and they are generated from your application rather than from a department's wish list. Treat the recommendation as a starting point for a call, then follow the same steps as any other vacancy.
A good call is mostly preparation, not eloquence. Have your UCAS personal ID, Clearing number, subject grades and the course code on one sheet before dialling, because the first thirty seconds set the tone for everything after. Staff ask about grades and availability, then expect three sentences explaining why this subject and why now. International applicants should also have a qualification equivalency note ready, since grade names differ between systems. Note the name of whoever you speak to and the time of the call, because a verbal offer is only the beginning of the paperwork.
Certain questions are worth asking before the call ends. Ask how many places remain and whether the course is full but waiting on confirmations from earlier callers. Ask whether entry is for this September or deferred a year, since that changes visa timing entirely. Foundation content in the first term matters if you are switching subject, and so does the accommodation guarantee, which many universities run on a first-come basis. Fee bands and any extra charges belong in the same conversation. If the answer is yes, ask when the decision will appear in the system, then ring again if a day passes without it.
A course code that does not match your grades is not the end of the route. Integrated foundation years often sit a grade band below the three-year version of the same subject, and progression is built into the design. Joint honours combinations can be more forgiving than either single subject, and some universities split one course into main campus and satellite codes with different pressure on places. Transfer entry exists too, but it needs module transcripts and syllabuses, and the assessment takes days rather than hours. Ask about progression rates rather than assuming a foundation year guarantees the degree.
Clearing courses are not a leftovers bin. Vacancies reflect recruitment planning rather than teaching quality, and the same department can be oversubscribed one year and short the next. Selective universities do appear in the listings, particularly in engineering, materials and geography, where application numbers swing sharply. The opposite error is treating Clearing as a leisurely shop, when popular courses close within a week of results day. Hitting a published grade threshold does not trigger an automatic offer either, because a person on the phone is deciding, often in the order calls arrive.
International applicants face a timetable problem that domestic ones never see. A CAS is issued only after a verbal offer is confirmed, and a student visa application made outside the UK normally takes around three weeks, which is uncomfortably tight for anyone deciding in mid-August. Students on courses longer than six months may enter up to one month before the start date, so travel should be booked after the visa is granted rather than before. Ask for the latest arrival date in writing, and check how long funds must sit in the account before the bank statement is accepted.
Missing out in Clearing does not have to cost a year. Ask the universities that turned you down for feedback, because the answer is usually a specific grade rather than a vague no. A second application, whether for the following September or a January start, needs a rewritten personal statement covering what you did in between, and paid work or a retaken module counts for more than an invented narrative. Spring intakes are small but real, particularly at postgraduate and foundation level. Keep the notes from every call, since they show which institutions were genuinely close to offering.
