Development is the third topic on Paper 1 of the AQA GCSE Psychology course, and the specification asks for three things only: how the brain matures, how Piaget explained changes in thinking, and how learning itself shapes development. Many candidates treat this as a list of names to memorise, and the questions rarely reward that. What examiners want is a clear link between a study, its finding and the conclusion drawn from it.
The brain stem is the first structure to take shape in the womb, and it manages breathing and heartbeat from before birth; the thalamus then becomes the relay station for sensory signals, while the cerebellum and the cortex mature later, bringing coordination and abstract thought. Growth runs from the bottom up and from the inside out, which explains why a newborn can breathe unaided but cannot yet plan. In a two-mark answer, pair every structure with its function, since a name alone rarely earns the second mark.
Genes provide the blueprint: they set the sequence in which the neural tube and the main structures are laid down, and they are the nature half of the argument. The environment then decides which connections survive, through nutrition, stimulation and everyday interaction, which is the nurture half. Because the specification lists them side by side, a four-mark answer needs both strands and a sentence on how they combine; answers that pick a side usually stall at two marks.
A schema is Piaget's term for the mental framework a person uses to make sense of the world. When new information is slotted straight into an existing framework, that is assimilation; when the framework itself has to be rebuilt, that is accommodation, and the balance reached afterwards is equilibration. Exam questions often describe a child's reaction and ask which process is involved, so the test is simple: did the framework change? If it did not, the answer is assimilation, however unfamiliar the object looks.
The four stages run in a fixed order: sensorimotor from birth to two, pre-operational from two to seven, concrete operational from seven to eleven, and formal operational from eleven upwards. Ages are a rough guide rather than a rule, and Piaget himself accepted that children move at different speeds. What earns marks is the quality of thinking at each stage, so describe how the child reasons rather than reciting the numbers; examiners report that age labels are usually right and the descriptions are usually thin.
Egocentrism, in Piaget's sense, is the difficulty of taking another person's point of view, and the three mountains task was designed to show it. A child sits at one side of a model, a doll is placed opposite, and the child chooses a photograph of what the doll can see; most four and five year olds pick their own view. Piaget and Inhelder treated this as evidence of egocentrism, although critics argue the task is abstract and verbally demanding, so a child may understand the idea but fail to express it.
Hughes replaced the mountains with a scene children recognise: a boy has to hide from two policemen, and the child judges whether the hiding place is visible from where the officers stand. Most three and four year olds answered correctly, a far better result than the mountains produced. Hughes concluded that pre-operational children are not wholly egocentric and that the earlier task underestimated them, a point worth stating as a criticism of method rather than a refutation of the whole theory.
Conservation is the understanding that quantity survives a change in appearance, and the standard tests use water poured into a narrow beaker, clay rolled into a sausage, and coins spread further apart. Children in the pre-operational stage usually say the amount has changed, because they centre on one dimension such as height and ignore width. Conservation of number tends to appear first and conservation of volume last, and an answer that describes the two displays and the question asked will score better than one that only names the finding.
McGarrigle and Donaldson turned the conservation test into a story: a naughty teddy bear apparently disrupts the materials, so the change looks accidental instead of intentional. With that small change, far more children gave the correct answer, which suggests the original procedure made them think the adult wanted a different response. The study is named in the specification and belongs with the methodological criticisms of Piaget, so link the change in procedure to the change in results before drawing the conclusion.
Piaget's theory reaches the classroom through task design: match the demand to the stage the class is working at. Pre-operational children need objects and pictures, since verbal rules alone rarely shift their thinking; concrete operational children build concepts through sorting, ordering and measuring; only formal operational learners handle hypothetical reasoning and several variables at once. The specification places this under development because it is about teaching decisions, and a named activity with a reason usually fills a four-mark question better than general praise of child-centred learning.
Dweck's mindset theory turns on two beliefs about ability. A fixed mindset treats ability as a set quantity, so failure is read as a verdict on the person; a growth mindset treats ability as improvable through effort and better strategy, so failure becomes information. The beliefs change behaviour under difficulty, with one learner avoiding the task and the other seeking feedback and practice, and Dweck's work on praise suggests that commending effort supports the second pattern more reliably than commending cleverness.
Self-efficacy is a person's judgement about whether they can carry out a specific task, and it sits alongside mindset rather than replacing it. A learner who believes ability can grow tends to keep their sense of competence intact after a setback, especially when the setback is attributed to effort or strategy rather than to talent. Feedback that names the faulty step in a piece of reasoning does more for this than praise in general, which is why vague encouragement is a common weakness in answers about improving motivation.
Learning styles divide students into visualisers and verbalisers and claim that teaching should match the label. Willingham's objection is blunt: a preference is not evidence of better learning, and matching instruction to the preferred style has not produced reliable gains. His wider theory puts factual knowledge before skill, arguing that practice to the point of automaticity frees working memory for reasoning. The specification sets the two side by side, so a strong answer states the claim, notes the lack of supporting evidence, and offers the alternative.
