「Living things and their habitats」是英格兰 KS2 科学课程里跨度最长的一条主线。
The Living things and their habitats strand runs further than any other topic in the KS2 science curriculum, appearing in Years 2, 4, 5 and 6 of the programme of study published by the Department for Education and updated in May 2015. Each year's requirement is one short line beginning pupils should be taught to, and the verbs carry as much weight as the nouns: describe, recognise, give reasons. What follows walks through the four years in order, with one observable hook and one common error for each.
Year 2 opens with a three-way split: alive, dead, and never alive. The test is a short list of life processes such as respiration, feeding, growth, responding to stimuli and reproduction, and pupils are expected to name the evidence before they name the category. A flame consumes oxygen and spreads, yet it has no cells and cannot reproduce, so it belongs with things that were never alive, while a fallen leaf once was alive and now is dead. Teachers look for the reasons, and a bare label without evidence rarely earns the mark.
A habitat is defined in the programme of study as the natural environment or home of a range of plants and animals, and a microhabitat is simply a very small one, with woodlice under stones, logs or leaf litter given as the official example. That distinction matters in answers, because a field is not one habitat but a patchwork of damp, dark and warm pockets with different conditions. Pupils who write only that ants live in soil leave the interesting half out, since the mark sits with humidity, light and food supply, which is why ten minutes outdoors with a magnifier usually beats memorising the definition.
Food chains appear in both Year 2 and Year 4, but the demand shifts: Year 2 asks only for a simple chain showing where an animal's food comes from, while Year 4 requires chains to be built and interpreted with the words producer, predator and prey used correctly. The arrow is where marks are lost most often, since it shows the direction in which food and energy pass, so grass -> rabbit -> fox points from the eaten to the eater. Writers who simply draw left to right end up reversing the meaning, and a fox labelled as a producer tells the reader that the chain was copied rather than understood.
Year 4 asks pupils to recognise that living things can be grouped in many ways, and the notes offer the standard first cut: vertebrates into fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, invertebrates into snails and slugs, worms, spiders and insects. The criterion is structural and observable, namely whether a backbone is present. Whales and dolphins are the classic trap, because they swim but breathe air and feed their young on milk, so they sit with the mammals, and grouping by where an animal lives rather than by its body plan is the error to watch for.
A classification key turns observation into a run of questions with two exits each, so every answer halves the field. Good questions point at features that can be seen and checked again: legs or no legs, how many pairs, hard or membranous wings, needle-shaped or broad leaves. Year 4 asks for keys to be made as well as used, which in practice means a simple guide to the plants and animals of the school grounds. Pupils who think a key is a list of names miss the point, because it has to work for someone who has never met the organism, and skipping a level of questions is the usual way two unrelated routes end up at the same answer.
Plants get a simpler treatment, because the notes divide them into flowering plants, grasses included, and non-flowering plants such as ferns and mosses. The criterion is the presence of flowers rather than seeds, which is why conifers are often discussed separately at this stage. Mosses are frequently mistaken for small grass because they form a low green carpet, yet they have no vascular tissue and therefore cannot grow tall, while the spore cases on the underside of a fern frond are sometimes misread as insect eggs.
The third Year 4 requirement is that environments change and that such change can sometimes endanger living things. Human impact is split into positive examples, such as nature reserves, ecologically planned parks and garden ponds, and negative ones such as population growth and development, litter and deforestation. Read alongside food chains the point becomes concrete, since shrinking a habitat affects every link above it, which is why a seasonal weather shift is a different answer from habitat loss.
Year 5 turns to life cycles and asks for the differences between a mammal, an amphibian, an insect and a bird. The comparison worth making is whether the young resembles the adult: a frog begins as an aquatic tadpole with gills and becomes an air-breathing adult, a butterfly passes through a pupa, a bird lays a hard-shelled egg and feeds its chicks, and a mammal gives birth and suckles its young. Listing four cycles earns little on its own; the mark comes from laying them on one timeline and saying where the resemblance breaks down, and grasshoppers are often given a pupa they never have.
Reproduction is the second half of Year 5, with the notes pointing out that plants reproduce both sexually and asexually while animals are treated as sexual. Sexual reproduction runs through pollination and fertilisation, so the offspring carries a mixture of both parents, whereas asexual reproduction needs no partner and produces offspring that are near copies of the parent. The suggested practical work is to grow new plants from seeds, stem cuttings, root cuttings, tubers and bulbs, and a potato tuber or an onion bulb makes the point in a single lesson. Cuttings are often presented as evidence of sexual reproduction, which is the misconception to head off.
Year 6 moves from grouping to the classification system itself, and the notes single out Carl Linnaeus as the pioneer. His lasting tool is binomial nomenclature: every species carries a two-part name, genus first and species second, with the genus capitalised and the whole name italicised in print. Because the name is Latin-based and international, one species stays the same species in a Chinese, English or Japanese textbook. Pupils who call it the English name miss the point, and reversing the two parts is the error that shows up most often.
Year 6 asks for broad groups based on shared observable characteristics, naming micro-organisms, plants and animals explicitly. Each of those broad groups can then be subdivided, which is the thread running back to the Year 2 sorting activity. Micro-organisms are treated as one group at this stage without splitting bacteria, fungi and viruses, and pupils often push further anyway, so the useful correction is that a mushroom is not a plant at all, having no chlorophyll and no photosynthesis.
At KS3 the same thread becomes interactions and interdependencies, and the programme of study names three lines: the interdependence of organisms in an ecosystem including food webs and insect-pollinated crops, the importance of plant reproduction through insect pollination for human food security, and how organisms affect and are affected by their environment, including the accumulation of toxic materials. Seeing those three lines early makes it clear that a KS2 food chain is a first step towards a food web rather than the finish. Classification and ecology are usually taught apart, yet the group an organism belongs to often explains where it sits in a web, so the cross-links are worth pointing out.
