AQA GCSE History
Conflict and tension between East and West,
Cold War questions at AQA reward explanation rather than a timeline. Many candidates can list every conference and still lose marks, because they never say why a particular turning point raised or lowered tension. This walkthrough follows the order of the specification and flags the places where marks are usually lost.
Yalta in February 1945 and Potsdam five months later are usually taught as two meetings, but examiners treat them as the moment the Grand Alliance began to break. At Yalta the Big Three agreed on four occupation zones for Germany and on a Soviet promise to enter the war against Japan within three months of victory in Europe. At Potsdam the tone had changed: Truman had replaced Roosevelt, the atomic bomb had been tested, and Stalin refused to give ground over Poland. A common mistake is to describe both conferences as successful cooperation, when the disagreements over Poland, reparations and Soviet troops in eastern Europe were left open.
Ideology explains why an alliance built to defeat Hitler collapsed within two years. Washington wanted open markets and free elections in liberated Europe, while Moscow wanted a buffer zone on its western border after losing around 27 million people in the war. The bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 convinced Stalin that nuclear advantage would be traded for political advantage, and the Soviet test of 1949 ended the American monopoly. Two telegrams turned suspicion into policy, with Kennan's Long Telegram of February 1946 arguing for containment and Novikov's telegram of September 1946 claiming that Washington sought global dominance.
Churchill spoke at Fulton, Missouri, on 5 March 1946 and described an iron curtain stretching from Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic. The phrase worked because it matched what had already happened between 1945 and 1948, as communist-dominated governments took power in Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Czechoslovakia. Many candidates picture the iron curtain as a physical wall, which costs credit because it was a political dividing line. In an answer, pair the phrase with one country and one year, such as the Czechoslovak crisis of February 1948.
The Truman Doctrine of 12 March 1947 committed the United States to supporting countries threatened by communism, which turned civil wars in Greece and Turkey into a front of the wider rivalry. In June 1947 Marshall proposed a European recovery programme that sent about 13 billion dollars to sixteen western European states over four years. Moscow read both moves as economic penetration and replied with Cominform in September 1947 and Comecon in January 1949. A common error is to say only that America paid; the aid came with conditions, including open economic data and purchases of American goods.
In June 1948 the western powers introduced a new currency in their zones and Stalin responded by cutting every road and rail link into West Berlin. The city held around two million people and needed thousands of tonnes of supplies each day, so Britain and the United States supplied it by air for almost a year until the blockade was lifted in May 1949. The outcome was the formal division of Germany, with the Federal Republic founded in May 1949 and the German Democratic Republic in October. Explain the chain rather than the dates alone, since the blockade was meant to force the west out, the airlift defeated it, and partition became the compromise.
Twelve states signed the North Atlantic Treaty on 4 April 1949, which was the first peacetime American security commitment to western Europe. When West Germany joined in May 1955, Moscow responded within days by setting up the Warsaw Pact. The two alliances differed in more than membership lists: NATO stressed collective defence and consultation, while Warsaw Pact command sat effectively in Moscow. Questions on how the blocs deepened the conflict are best answered through the collective defence clause and the rearmament of West Germany.
The Soviet test of August 1949 ended the American monopoly, and hydrogen bombs followed in 1952 and 1953, raising yields by orders of magnitude within a decade. Sputnik 1, launched in October 1957, showed that Moscow could deliver a warhead to the American mainland, and Washington replied by accelerating its missile and space programmes. The logic of mutually assured destruction made a first strike irrational, which is why nuclear weapons became a deterrent rather than a battlefield tool. Examiners reward that shift from weapons to deterrence, not a list of test dates.
Khrushchev's secret speech of February 1956 admitted Stalin's crimes and loosened control across eastern Europe. In October students and workers took to the streets of Budapest, and Nagy became prime minister, announced a multi-party system and withdrew Hungary from the Warsaw Pact. Soviet tanks entered the city on 4 November and the rising was crushed within days, with Nagy later executed. What matters for the essay is the limit it revealed: reform inside the bloc was negotiable, leaving it was not, and American talk of liberation stopped short of military action.
On 1 May 1960 an American U-2 reconnaissance aircraft was shot down over Soviet territory and its pilot, Gary Powers, was captured. At the Paris summit on 16 May Khrushchev demanded an apology and an end to the flights; Eisenhower offered only a pause, and the meeting collapsed. The timing is what makes the incident examinable, because both sides had been close to talks on banning nuclear tests. Two consequences are needed in any answer: the summit was cancelled and confidence between the superpowers fell sharply.
Khrushchev's ultimatum of 1958 gave the west six months to leave West Berlin, and the refusal set up the Vienna summit of June 1961, where the two leaders made no progress. With East Germans leaving through the city in large numbers, the East German government sealed the border with barbed wire on the night of 13 August 1961 and later built the concrete wall. The wall stopped the exodus and fixed the Cold War as a visible frontier, turning Berlin into the place where each side tested the other's resolve.
After the failed Bay of Pigs landing in April 1961, Castro openly aligned Cuba with Moscow. Reconnaissance flights in October 1962 found Soviet medium-range missile sites on the island, and Kennedy announced a naval quarantine and demanded their removal. After thirteen days Moscow withdrew the missiles in exchange for an American pledge not to invade Cuba and a secret withdrawal of missiles from Turkey. Many answers call this a clear American victory, but both sides gained something and both saw how close misjudgement had come, which is why a hotline and the 1963 Test Ban Treaty followed.
Dubcek became first secretary in January 1968 and introduced what was called socialism with a human face, loosening censorship, allowing enterprise reform and opening a debate on federalism. Moscow feared the example would spread, and Warsaw Pact forces entered Czechoslovakia on the night of 20 August. The Brezhnev Doctrine that followed turned intervention into a rule: if socialism was threatened in one state, the others had the right to act. That was the plainest statement of bloc discipline in the whole period, and it shaped the detente that came afterwards.
By the early 1970s both sides had reasons to slow the rivalry, and West German chancellor Brandt pursued Ostpolitik by recognising post-war borders and improving ties with eastern Europe. On 26 May 1972 the superpowers signed SALT I together with the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty, which kept defensive systems small. Detente rested on an acceptance that nuclear parity could not be overturned, so the focus moved to capping numbers and keeping channels open. It did not end the Cold War, and confrontation returned after the Soviet entry into Afghanistan in 1979.
This option sits in Paper 1 Section B of AQA GCSE History 8145, and the specification divides it into origins, development and transformation. Paper 1 lasts two hours, carries 84 marks and counts for half of the GCSE, and the four questions in Section B usually run at 4, 8, 12 and 16 marks plus 4 marks for spelling, punctuation and grammar. The 4-mark question asks what you can learn from a source, so the answer must quote specific details; the 8-mark question wants a causal account; the 12-mark question judges usefulness, which means content plus provenance; the 16-mark question needs a judgement and a counter-argument. Length is not the criterion at 16 marks, since a clear line of argument supported by precise evidence scores higher than a long narrative.
