Force and magnets is a Year 3 topic in the English national curriculum, and for most children it is the first time a science lesson treats force as an idea rather than a list of facts. The topic is short on paper, yet the questions that trip children up are narrow: whether a force has to involve touching, whether every metal is magnetic, and what actually happens when two poles meet. The notes below follow the six statements in the 2014 programme of study and mark the parts that are usually answered wrongly.
A force is either a push or a pull, and both count. Opening a door involves a push on the panel; dragging a suitcase involves a pull backwards. Force is measured in newtons (N), and the spring forcemeter in the classroom is scaled in newtons, so a reading of 2 N is a measurement rather than an opinion. Children often write only about pushes and forget pulls, which halves the description they were asked for. Movement is not the test: an object can have forces acting on it while standing perfectly still.
Some forces need two objects in contact: kicking a ball, pushing a swing, opening a door. Magnetic force behaves differently, because it acts across a gap. A magnet picks up a paper clip from a few millimetres away, and the clip accelerates towards it before anything touches. Children classify magnetism as a contact force because the objects end up stuck together, which confuses the result with the condition. A full written answer has to say that the objects were not touching at the moment the force acted.
Push the same toy car across a smooth table and across a carpet, and the table run travels much further. The difference is friction, the force between surfaces that resists sliding. The programme of study asks pupils to compare movement on different surfaces, and a usable comparison keeps the push, the car and the starting line identical while changing only the surface. Change two things at once and the measurements can no longer tell you which one mattered.
A bar magnet has a north pole at one end and a south pole at the other. Bring two north poles together and the magnets push apart, sometimes hard enough to jump out of a child's hand. Put north against south and they snap together. The rule to apply is same poles repel, opposite poles attract, and the prediction question in the national curriculum is really a question about which two poles are facing each other.
Only a few materials are magnetic: iron, steel, cobalt and nickel. Copper, aluminium, gold and silver are not, which is why the sentence all metals are magnetic is wrong and gets marked wrong. The sorting task is simple. Touch each sample to the magnet, record whether it is pulled, then split the collection into two groups. Coins are the awkward case in a British classroom, since some have steel cores and others are copper-nickel alloys, so the honest answer comes from testing the coin in front of you.
A sheet of paper between magnet and paper clip does not stop the attraction, and neither does a plastic ruler, a glass slide or a glass of water. Magnetic force passes through these materials instead of being carried by them. What does change is distance: add more layers and the pull weakens until the clip falls. The common assumption that a barrier blocks magnetism takes one lesson to test, and it does not survive.
Hold a bar magnet near a pile of paper clips and the ends collect far more than the middle, where almost nothing sticks. The ends are the poles; the middle is the weakest part. Sprinkling iron filings over a magnet under paper traces curved lines that run out of one pole and into the other. Change the shape and the poles move, so a horseshoe or a ring magnet keeps them somewhere else and the position has to be found rather than assumed.
A compass needle is a small magnet on a pivot. Left alone it swings until it lines up with the Earth's magnetic field, and the end marked north points roughly towards geographic north. The physics behind that is slightly awkward: the magnetic pole near the geographic north is a magnetic south pole, which is why the needle's north end is attracted to it. Keep a compass away from magnets and steel furniture, or the needle will point at the table instead.
Magnets are hidden in far more places than children expect. A fridge door seals with a flexible magnetic strip, a cabinet catch is a small magnet plus a steel plate, and a compass is a magnet on a pivot. Speakers and headphones use a permanent magnet to drive a cone, and magnetic resonance imaging in hospitals depends on a very strong field. Recycling plants use electromagnets to lift iron out of mixed waste.
Magnetism is not permanent. Heat a magnet enough, or drop it hard enough often enough, and it weakens. Classroom magnets also fade slowly, especially when they spend months stacked with like poles pressed together. Storing them pole to opposite pole, or bridging both ends with a piece of iron, slows the loss. This sits outside the Year 3 statements, and it comes up whenever a child asks why the old magnets in the tray are weaker than the new ones.
Working scientifically is spelled out in the same document: ask a question, run a test, collect data, look for patterns. On paper that becomes three decisions. What is being changed, what is being measured, and what stays the same? To compare magnet strength, change the magnet, measure either the number of paper clips lifted or the greatest distance at which one clip is still attracted, and keep everything else identical. Repeat each reading and average it before drawing a conclusion.
An investigation needs a record. A usable table keeps one column for the condition, one for each reading and one for the average, with units written into the heading. For paper clips lifted, log three attempts per magnet and work out the mean afterwards. Phrases such as a lot or a little cannot be compared from row to row, which is why the numbers carry the argument and the adjectives do not. Draw the table before the equipment comes out.
The most frequent mistake is describing anything that sticks as magnetic. A magnet lifting an iron nail is magnetism; two sheets of paper clinging together is not. Next comes the assumption that all metals are magnetic, followed by the conclusion that a magnet is broken when two like poles refuse to meet. None of these are careless slips. They are muddled categories, and the fix is to state the evidence: which material, which two poles, and whether the objects were touching.
Three tests need nothing but kitchen equipment. Take the magnet off the back of a fridge magnet and touch it to spoons, foil and coins, recording what is pulled. Drop a paper clip into a glass of water and slide a magnet up the outside to drag the clip with it. Bring two magnets together slowly, first north to north, then north to south, and let the child describe how the two approaches feel different. Each takes under five minutes and covers a different statement in the topic.
At the end of key stage 2 there are national tests in English and mathematics, and none in science. Science is reported through teacher assessment against the national curriculum, with schools submitting their judgements for each pupil. The science sampling tests described on gov.uk were last administered in 2018, and the Department for Education later decided not to run them again; the related guidance was withdrawn in April 2024. For a Year 3 child the practical consequence is simple: describe what happened accurately and run the test properly.
