Marketing sits inside Paper 2 of AQA GCSE Business and supplies much of the case study material. The twelve points below follow section 3.5 of the AQA specification, and each one ends with a judgement a candidate can carry into the exam room.
Marketing in the AQA specification starts with the customer rather than with the product, and 3.5.1 asks candidates to explain why identifying and satisfying customer needs matters. It points a business towards a product people will actually buy, lifts sales, shapes the marketing mix, cuts expensive mistakes and keeps the firm competitive, and those five reasons form one chain of cause and effect, so a wrong reading of demand turns every later decision about price or place into fine-tuning in the wrong direction. Many students assume marketing means advertising and only discover in 3.5.4 that promotion is one quarter of the mix; the sequence runs from customer, to need, to price and channel. A short check is to name the buyer, the reason for buying and the sum they will pay, because an answer that cannot name those three is guessing.
Section 3.5.2 lists four bases of segmentation, namely gender, age, location and income, and the exam asks why a particular business slices its market that way rather than asking for a definition. Segmentation turns one large market into groups a firm can serve with a distinct offer, which then shapes copy, store location and pack size. Income works well in pricing questions, where a basic model and a premium model place two groups in separate price bands, while location matters most where delivery costs are heavy, as with chilled food or a gym site. Age is the trap, since a sixteen year old and a forty-five year old may buy the same running shoe for different reasons, and an answer that ignores the commuters named in the case study has stopped using the evidence provided.
Primary research is data a business collects itself, and the specification names questionnaires, surveys, interviews, focus groups, internet research and printed press. What separates them is sample size and depth rather than appearance, since a questionnaire reaches many people cheaply but returns only the answers the questions allowed, while interviews and focus groups reach few people and let the researcher ask why, which suits testing a new product idea. Internet research comes back fast but skews towards people who are online and willing to fill in a form, whereas a printed questionnaire still reaches older customers at the cost of a low return rate. Many students assume primary data must be better than secondary data, when the real weakness is sample bias, and a two-week budget fits a questionnaire plus social media far better than a focus group.
Secondary research uses data someone else has already gathered, from trade reports and government statistics to whatever a competitor publishes, which makes it cheap and quick but possibly dated, and its definitions may not match the question a firm is asking. The specification expects candidates to read tables and charts and to identify market size and market share, where size is the whole market's sales value for a year and share is the firm's own sales divided by that figure, so the two must be measured in the same units before any percentage carries meaning. Marks are lost in two familiar places, once when size is given in units and the firm's sales in money, and again when a growth rate is reported as a share. Examiners see correct formulas fed with numbers from the wrong year, so circle the year in the case before choosing figures.
The specification names five pricing methods, price skimming, price penetration, competitive pricing, loss leader and cost-plus. Skimming sets a high launch price to collect the premium buyers first, as handset and console makers do, while penetration goes the other way and buys share with a low price before volume spreads the fixed cost. Competitive pricing follows rivals and suits markets where products look alike, a loss leader sells one item below cost to pull people through the door, and cost-plus adds a margin to unit cost, which is easy to calculate but says nothing about what a customer will pay. The judgement mark belongs to the scenario, so a technically new product fits skimming, a crowded market that needs volume fits penetration and a supermarket chasing footfall fits the loss leader, which is a deliberate draw rather than a one-off reduction.
A price is not chosen in a vacuum, and the specification asks candidates to separate internal from external influences. Cost sets a floor, because selling below unit cost loses money on every item unless a loss leader is buying something else, while the nature of the market decides how far customers notice a change, since demand for a necessity survives a rise that sends buyers of a substitutable product elsewhere. Competition narrows the room a firm has, and the stage of the product life cycle shifts pricing power, with few alternatives early on and little choice but clearance pricing in decline. The basic link between price and demand is also required, and an answer that mentions only cost when the case says a rival has just cut prices by a fifth has dropped competition from the analysis.
The product element covers three things in the specification, the benefits and risks of developing something new, product design and image, and differentiation. Differentiation rests on a unique selling point and a brand image, where the selling point is the one sentence a customer can repeat about why this firm rather than another, and an image is an impression built slowly through consistent quality, packaging and communication that no single campaign can buy. New product development can lift margins and reach new customers, at the risk of research spending that never returns, a launch badly timed or a product that cannibalises the existing range. Many students think a selling point must be a technical first, yet next-day delivery or a sixty-day returns promise does the same job, provided the case shows a rival cannot copy it quickly.
The specification splits the life cycle into research and development, introduction, growth, maturity and decline, and asks whether an extension strategy suits a given business. Cash behaves differently at each stage, with heavy spending and thin sales at launch, rising sales and arriving rivals in growth, peak sales and the sharpest price competition at maturity, and squeezed margins in decline. Five extension routes are listed, new packaging, added or changed features, a new target market, heavier advertising and a price cut, and their costs differ sharply, since repackaging is cheap and buys little time whereas selling the same product to another country or age group can restart the cycle. A price cut trades margin for volume, so the fixed costs have to be checked before it is recommended, and the judgement mark needs a reason why this route works for this firm at this moment.
The product portfolio section asks for the Boston Matrix, judged on market growth and relative market share. A star holds a high share of a fast-growing market and needs continued investment, so it does not necessarily generate cash, while a cash cow holds a high share of a slow market and funds the rest of the portfolio. A question mark has a low share of a fast-growing market, and whether to invest depends on whether share can realistically be built, whereas a dog has a low share of a slow market and is usually a candidate for shrinking or exit. Case questions often supply a four-box diagram and ask for the category plus a recommendation, and the usual mistake is to read growth alone and forget the share axis, which is what decides where the cash actually flows.
Promotion covers a long list in the specification, from newspaper, magazine, television, internet and billboard advertising to public relations, sales promotion such as displays, two-for-one offers, free gifts, samples, coupons and competitions, sponsorship and social media. The choice is not a matter of taste, since five influences are named, namely the finance available, what competitors are doing, the nature of the product or service, the nature of the market and the target customer. Promotion is asked to inform or remind, to create or lift sales, to build or change image, and to persuade, so a small budget fits social media and sales promotion better than a television campaign. Where the aim is image, moving a brand from cheap to specialist for instance, public relations and sponsorship usually work better than hard advertising, and an answer that names the aim before the method avoids a list of tactics.
Place means the channel of distribution, and the specification names retailers, wholesalers and telesales before asking candidates to analyse e-commerce and m-commerce. A retailer meets the final customer directly, which gives control but limits reach, while a wholesaler puts stock into many small shops at the cost of margin and of information about the end buyer, and telesales suits higher-value products that need explaining. E-commerce extends reach to national and international markets with low fixed cost, yet brings delivery, returns and platform commission with it, and m-commerce now carries a growing share of that trade through payments and notifications on the phone. Three tests decide whether a channel fits, namely where customers already shop, whether the product needs a trial or installation, and whether the firm can carry the stock and the delivery, which is why made-to-order furniture rarely works on a web store alone.
The final strand of 3.5 asks for the integrated nature of the marketing mix, used to support a decision. Integration means the four Ps constrain one another, so a premium price needs packaging, channel and promotion that carry the same value, and any change to one element should send the candidate back over the other three. The AQA website sets out Paper 2 as the influence of marketing and finance on business activity, lasting 1 hour 45 minutes for 90 marks and half of the GCSE, with Section A worth 20 marks of multiple choice and short answer, Section B a case study worth about 34 marks and Section C another worth about 36. The routine is fixed, read the objective and the constraints in the case, choose a mix, justify why it suits this firm and name one risk, because a bare recommendation to cut prices and promote earns very little. Evaluative sentences start with depends on, which keeps the conclusion tied to a condition rather than to a verdict.
