Natural hazards carry 33 marks in Paper 1 of AQA Geography 8035. The questions rarely stop at naming a case study; they ask how the process works, who was affected and what the response achieved. The sections below follow the specification order for tectonic hazards, weather hazards and climate change.
Geography 8035 Paper 1 is called Living with the physical environment; it runs for 1 hour 30 minutes and carries 88 marks, which is 35 per cent of the GCSE. Section A covers natural hazards for 33 marks, while the ecosystems section takes 25 and the UK landscapes section 30. Inside Section A the specification splits the content into tectonic hazards, weather hazards and climate change, and roughly half of the marks reward explanation and response rather than description.
The type of plate margin decides where tectonic hazards cluster. At a constructive margin the plates pull apart and magma rises to build a mid-ocean ridge, as Iceland shows along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge; at a destructive margin one plate subducts, cutting a deep trench such as the Japan Trench and feeding a volcanic arc. Conservative margins such as the San Andreas fault generate frequent shallow earthquakes with almost no volcanic activity.
Primary effects come straight from ground shaking: collapsed buildings, broken bridges, cracked roads and ruptured pipes. Secondary effects follow the shaking, including landslides, dammed lakes that later burst, fires and disease outbreaks. The 2010 Haiti earthquake at magnitude 7.0 killed more than 220,000 people on the government count, while the far stronger magnitude 8.8 event in Chile that year killed about 500, because building codes, population density and rescue capacity drove the difference as much as magnitude did.
Immediate responses cover the first hours and weeks, from search and rescue to temporary shelters, field hospitals and restored water supplies; long-term responses stretch over months and years, including rebuilt housing, strengthened building codes, restored livelihoods and warning systems. Confusing the two loses marks, because a tent is not a long-term response and a revised building code is not an immediate one. The magnitude 7.8 Nepal earthquake of 25 April 2015 shows the sequence, with rescue teams reaching mountain districts within a fortnight while housing grants were still being paid years later.
Weather hazards rest on the global atmospheric circulation model. Air rises at the equator where insolation is strongest, forming a low-pressure belt with heavy rainfall, sinks around 30 degrees north and south to create the subtropical high that hosts most of the world's great deserts, and returns towards the equator as the trade winds. At mid-latitudes the prevailing westerlies and the polar front steer depressions across the UK, and the jet stream meander decides whether polar air reaches Britain.
A tropical storm needs sea surface temperatures near 27 degrees Celsius and a deep warm layer, otherwise churned cold water cuts off its energy supply. It also needs a position between about 5 and 30 degrees from the equator where the Coriolis effect can spin the rising air, low vertical wind shear, and a pre-existing disturbance such as an easterly wave. After landfall, friction and the loss of warm water weaken it within a day.
Typhoon Haiyan struck the eastern Visayas of the Philippines on 8 November 2013 with sustained winds near 315 kilometres per hour and a storm surge above five metres around Tacloban. The national disaster agency recorded about 6,300 deaths and more than four million displaced people, with contaminated water and blocked supply routes outlasting the wind damage. Most deaths came from the surge rather than the wind, which is why later responses concentrated on evacuation and sea-level warning.
Two UK winter events serve the exam well. The winter of 2013 to 2014 brought repeated Atlantic storms that left the Somerset Levels flooded for weeks, cut rail links and forced long-term pumping and raised roads, and the Met Office ranked that season among the wettest English winters on record. The Beast from the East in late February 2018 followed a sudden stratospheric warming that split the polar vortex, sending Siberian air south with heavy snow and school closures.
Evidence for climate change falls into three families. Instrumental records from the mid-nineteenth century measure temperature and rainfall directly and cover land and ocean, though they span only about 170 years; historical sources such as diaries, harvest logs and ships' journals reach further back; natural archives such as ice cores, tree rings, pollen and lake sediments reconstruct conditions over hundreds of thousands of years. The IPCC Sixth Assessment Report puts global surface temperature in 2011 to 2020 at about 1.09 degrees Celsius above the 1850 to 1900 baseline.
Natural causes explain short-term wobbles but not the sustained rise of the last seventy years. Milankovitch cycles shift the Earth's orbit and tilt over tens of thousands of years and drive glacial cycles; volcanic eruptions inject sulphate aerosols into the stratosphere and cool the planet for a year or two, as Tambora did in 1815; solar output varies by less than 0.2 per cent across its eleven-year cycle. Greenhouse gases from fossil fuels, deforestation, farming and cement have lifted carbon dioxide from about 280 parts per million before industrialisation to roughly 420 today.
Mitigation attacks the causes, adaptation attacks the consequences, and the nine-mark question usually asks for both. Renewable power, energy efficiency, afforestation and carbon capture cut future emissions, while sea walls, flood storage, drought-tolerant crops and early warning systems reduce losses from change that has already happened. The UK Climate Change Act 2008, amended in 2019, writes a 2050 net zero target into law on gov.uk, which is a mitigation commitment at national scale.
The nine-mark evaluation question carries three extra marks for spelling, punctuation and grammar, so it is worth twelve of the 88 marks on the paper. A workable order is a clear judgement first, then case-study data that supports it, then the opposite view, and finally a return to the judgement with the conditions spelled out; examiners reward evaluation, not a longer list. Answers that describe a hazard for two pages without weighing anything up sit in the lower bands even when the facts are right.
Every major section of Paper 1 arrives with a figure or a map, and the marks usually hang on using it. Read the title and units first, then the key, then the range and any outlier, and be ready to describe location through latitude, coastline shape, distance from a plate margin and population density. Copying numbers from a figure without explaining them earns nothing on a four-mark question.
