Times tables in English primary schools are not a box to tick. The National Curriculum (DfE, 2013) states that by the end of Year 4 pupils should have memorised their tables up to 12 x 12 with precision and fluency. In June of Year 4 they sit the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC): 25 questions, six seconds each. The check does not ask whether a child can work an answer out. It asks whether the answer arrives without any working out at all.
Fractions need common denominators, area needs length times width, ratio needs both sides multiplied by the same number, and long division is multiplication at every step. Pupils who treat tables as infant work tend to meet the same wall in Year 5: simplifying is slow, unit conversion is slow, and every ratio question ends up in a written method. The method is rarely the problem. The recall is.
According to DfE guidance on gov.uk (updated April 2026), the MTC is an onscreen check of 25 multiplication questions drawn from the 2 to 12 tables, preceded by three practice questions. Each question allows six seconds, with a three second gap between questions, and the whole thing usually takes under five minutes. There is no pass mark: teachers pass the score on to parents, and schools use the data to spot pupils who need support. The 2026 window runs from 1 to 12 June, with catch-up to 19 June. Questions from the 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12 tables are weighted more heavily than those from the 1 and 10 tables.
The ten times table is a place value job: append a zero to a whole number, and 0.6 times 10 becomes 6. The five times table can only end in 0 or 5, so a pupil who knows whether a number is odd or even already knows the final digit. The two times table is the even sequence. These three are often dismissed as easy marks, yet they build the sense of what a multiple is, and that sense is what makes simplifying, finding common denominators and testing divisibility quick later on. The usual failure is chanting 5, 10, 15, 20 as a rhythm: ask 5 x 7 out of order and the rhythm is gone.
The fours are the twos doubled, and the eights are the fours doubled, so 8 x 6 can travel 6, 12, 24, 48. That chain is steadier than rote memory because it ties a new table to one the pupil already owns. Square facts deserve separate practice: 6 x 6 = 36, 7 x 7 = 49, 8 x 8 = 64, 9 x 9 = 81, 12 x 12 = 144. They turn up often in the check, and once they are secure, 7 x 8 becomes 7 x 7 plus one more 7 instead of a blind search.
When 9 x 7 will not come, take 10 x 7 = 70 and subtract 7 to get 63. In symbols, 9n = 10n - n, and it holds for every n. There is also a self-check: the digits of a multiple of 9 add up to a multiple of 9, so 6 + 3 = 9 and 1 + 8 = 9. That means both 54 and 63 pass the digit test, and only the tens digit settles it. For 9 x 6 the tens digit is one less than 6, so the answer is 54. Pupils who use the subtract-a-ten move rarely slip on the nines; pupils who only chant tend to wobble between 9 x 7 and 9 x 8.
11 x 7 is 70 plus 7, which is 77, so for single digit multipliers the elevens need almost no memory at all. The twelves split into 10 plus 2: 12 x 7 = 70 + 14 = 84, and 12 x 9 = 90 + 18 = 108. The twelve times table is the upper limit of the primary curriculum and is well covered in the check, so a pupil who stops at ten will fall back on a written method for 12 x 8, which six seconds will not allow. Splitting adds no new facts, only one addition that takes two or three seconds in the head.
Once the tables are secure, division needs no separate body of knowledge. 42 divided by 6 asks how many sixes make 42, and if 6 x 7 = 42 is already there, the answer is immediate. Every three numbers form a fact family: 6, 7 and 42 generate 6 x 7, 7 x 6, 42 / 6 and 42 / 7. Pupils who count up in sevens for 42 divided by 7 are throwing away a multiplication they already know. Another frequent slip is mixing 56 / 8 with 56 / 7, which is not a division problem at all but a missing fact: 8 x 7 = 56.
The seven times table is the one that stalls most pupils, because its neighbouring answers lack the tidy pattern of the twos, fives and tens. The distributive law offers a way round it: 6 x 7 = 6 x 5 + 6 x 2 = 30 + 12 = 42, and 8 x 7 = 8 x 5 + 8 x 2 = 40 + 16 = 56. A pupil who owns the fives and twos completely can assemble the sevens on the spot. For the timed check this is not the fastest route, since it adds an addition, but while learning it rescues the pupil and shows that multiplication is not counting on by ones.
In marking, three facts account for most errors: 7 x 8 = 56, 6 x 9 = 54 and 8 x 9 = 72, with pupils often offering a neighbouring answer such as 54, 56 or 63. The reason is concrete: those answers sit close together numerically, and the pupil has no checking habit. Two checks do most of the work. One anchors to a square: 7 x 8 is one more 7 than 7 x 7, and 49 plus 7 is 56. The other subtracts from a round number: 6 x 9 is one 6 less than 6 x 10, and 60 minus 6 is 54. A pupil who checks every answer immediately makes far fewer of these errors.
What matters is not how long practice lasts but how the answer is retrieved. Copying out a table is close to useless, because the eye is on the answer and the brain never has to recall it. Oral quizzing works: an adult says seven times eight at random, the child answers within three seconds, and a miss counts as a miss, with no counting on fingers. Ten to fifteen cards per session is enough; correct cards return the next day and missed cards return the same day, so the memory is reactivated before it fades. Tables already solid, usually the twos and fives, can drop out of the daily set, leaving the time for 7, 8, 9 and 12.
The check accepts answers by keyboard, touchscreen or mouse, and DfE guidance notes that in timed assessments of this kind Year 4 pupils often do slightly better with a keyboard or touchscreen than with a mouse, which schools confirm through the practice area. Once the real check starts, the six seconds need a plan: two or three seconds to reach the answer, the rest to enter it. Type the tens digit first, and do not keep deleting and retyping. There is a three second gap between questions, and it is better spent clearing the previous question than re-litigating it. Reaching all 25 questions matters more than any single one.
