Since the 2026 cycle, UCAS has split the personal statement into three questions that share one 4,000-character pool, with a 350-character floor on each answer. The shape changed, the substance did not: tutors still look for evidence that you understand what engineering actually asks of you. What follows walks through the three answers in the order you will write them, with the course requirements and test dates that most engineering applicants discover too late.
Why do you want to study this course or subject、How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject,以及 What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful。
The three questions are not a cosmetic change to the old essay. Each one asks for a different kind of evidence, so a paragraph praising your own curiosity cannot simply be stretched across all three. Admissions staff read the statement as a single document, which means overlap between answers reads as padding rather than emphasis, and a fact already stated in one place loses force when it reappears in another.
Motivation is convincing only when it is anchored to a problem you can describe. A named mechanism, a failed component or a design trade-off tells a tutor more than any sentence about lifelong curiosity, because it reveals how you think under pressure and what you choose to notice. Reading belongs here too, provided you state the judgement you took from it rather than the title printed on the cover, and a book you cannot summarise in one sentence is better left out.
Question two is about transfer, not transcript. Pick two or three modules, name the tool each one gave you, then show where you used that tool on a real task, because a list of subjects leaves the reader guessing what you can actually do. Tutors notice quickly when a candidate is filling space with grades they can already see elsewhere, and they rarely credit a module that is named but never used.
Projects earn their space when you describe the assumption that turned out to be wrong, not when you decorate them with praise. A competition result says little by itself, whereas the moment you abandoned one method for another shows how you work under constraint. Failure is usable evidence in engineering, as long as you can say what you changed afterwards and what the second attempt actually measured.
Everything outside the classroom counts, from a week of shadowing to a Saturday spent rebuilding a bike wheel. What matters is the sentence that follows the description, where you name the skill the experience built or the assumption it overturned. A list of dates and employers without that sentence wastes space you could have used on evidence, and most statements have less of that space than the writer assumes.
Terminology is where preparation shows, and where a careless applicant is caught fastest. Stress and strain are different quantities, and a candidate who swaps them signals that the materials chapter was skimmed rather than read. Use a technical word only when you can also say what it measured in your own project, including the units you recorded and the instrument you used.
Course choice matters before grades do. Maths is required almost everywhere in engineering, physics is required for most branches, and the most selective courses expect further maths or something close to it. Where a school does not offer further maths, describing what you studied instead is better than leaving the gap unexplained, especially if you worked through mechanics or pure maths material on your own.
The ESAT is part of the same application, not a separate race. Cambridge engineering candidates sit Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2 and Physics, each module lasting 40 minutes with 27 multiple-choice questions. Mentioning a project that leans on vectors or complex numbers ties the statement to the test without turning it into a study diary, and it gives the reader a reason to believe the technical claims you make elsewhere.
There is no rule that the three answers must be equal in length, despite what many applicants assume. Put the characters where the evidence is, which for most engineering applicants means the first two answers, and trim the third rather than padding it. Balance in the reader's mind comes from density, not from an even split, and a short answer carrying one verified detail reads stronger than a long one that repeats itself.
Adjectives are the cheapest thing you can put in a statement and the first thing a reader discounts. Replace them with a number, a material, a load or a failure mode, so the sentence could only have been written by someone who did the work. If a sentence cannot survive that test, cut it, even when it sounds impressive, because a reader who cannot verify a claim simply moves on.
Dates drive the writing schedule more than inspiration does. For 2027 entry, the UCAS 官网 timetable puts the Oxford and Cambridge equal consideration date at 18:00 UK time on 15 October 2026, with 13 January 2027 for most other courses. Working back four weeks for a final draft leaves room for a reference and a last read by someone who will tell you the truth about the parts that do not land.
Leave the statement alone for a day before the final read, because distance catches what familiarity hides and tired eyes miss. Check the character total, the 350-character floor on each answer, and whether any evidence appears twice. Then confirm that the course name matches the course you are applying to, since that is the error readers remember, and it is the one mistake that cannot be argued away at interview.
