Edexcel GCSE History
Edexcel GCSE History 1HI0
Edexcel GCSE History (1HI0) is examined through three papers worth 168 raw marks in total, and the qualification was first taught in 2016 with first certification in 2018. Marks are lost far more often through poor structure than through missing facts, since a candidate who knows every date can still sit in Level 2. The sections below work through each question type with a usable shape for the answer and the mistake examiners see most often. Read them alongside the mark scheme for your own option rather than as general advice.
The papers are not interchangeable in style. Paper 1 runs for 1 hour 20 minutes and carries 52 marks, split between a 16-mark historic environment section and a 36-mark thematic study that includes 4 marks for spelling, punctuation and grammar; Paper 2 is the longest at 1 hour 45 minutes with 64 marks across two booklets, and Paper 3 weighs 52 marks over a 16-mark source section and a 36-mark interpretations section. Because each option is assessed separately, the route your school enters you for decides which questions you will actually meet. Check the Pearson Edexcel 1HI0 specification before you buy a revision guide.
Give two things you can infer from Source A
Four-mark questions are the cheapest marks on the paper and the easiest to throw away. A strong answer gives two genuinely separate features, each anchored to one precise detail such as a named law, a stated number of guards or a described building; an inference question works the same way, pairing what the source suggests with the words that carry the suggestion. Copying the source earns a single mark however long the quotation, because description is not inference. Examiners look for two independent points, each supported, and nothing else.
How useful are Sources B and C
Usefulness questions reward a clear sense of purpose before content. Decide what the enquiry is trying to establish, then show what the source contributes, who produced it and when; a propaganda poster is excellent evidence of what a government wanted people to believe and weak evidence of what daily life was actually like. The strongest answers state the limit as well as the value, because a source with an obvious bias is still useful for the right question. Cover both sources, since the marks are split between them.
Two small questions test method rather than knowledge. The follow-up question wants a fresh enquiry you could actually run, together with the type of source that would answer it, such as court records or local newspapers for a question about how a law was enforced; repeating the source you already have scores nothing. The interpretations questions ask for a comparison, not two separate summaries, so state what each historian claims in one sentence and then name the difference. Explaining why they differ usually means pointing to different evidence, a different focus in time or the context in which each was written.
Twelve-mark explanations are marked on the chain of reasoning, not on the number of reasons. Two causes developed properly beat four that are merely named: for each one, state the cause, explain the mechanism that connects it to the outcome and then anchor it with a date, figure or named event. The stimulus points are a starting point and the mark scheme expects your own knowledge on top; a script that only expands the prompts rarely passes Level 3. Watch for answers that list causes in separate sentences without ever showing how one led to the next.
The narrative account is the one question on Paper 2 that rewards chronology with causation attached. Three events in the right order are worth little on their own; the marks come from showing how the first created the circumstances for the second, so connectives such as as a result and this led to are doing real work here. Keep it tight, roughly six to eight sentences covering the opening position, the turning point and the outcome, and do not spend space on a judgement the question has not asked for.
A judgement question is marked on whether a line of argument runs through the whole answer. State a position in the opening lines, ideally a qualified one, then test it against evidence on both sides before returning to it in the conclusion; a script that describes one side fully and the other in a single sentence cannot reach the top level however accurate its facts are. Each paragraph should connect back to the statement in the question rather than saving the opinion for the end. Examiners describe the failure as two essays stapled together.
Paper 3
The interpretations question on Paper 3 insists on both views, and the rubric is not decorative. Candidates who develop only the interpretation they prefer cap themselves in the middle levels, because the mark scheme rewards analysis of the material provided and the interplay between the two readings. Use contextual knowledge to argue which reading is better supported, remembering that better supported is not the same as correct, and keep sources (produced at the time) distinct from interpretations (written later by historians). Four marks of SPaG sit on this question, so full sentences, paragraphing and accurate specialist vocabulary are free marks.
Explain two of the following
The period study booklet hides two questions that reward precision about wording. Consequences ask what followed an event, so each answer needs the immediate result and the later effect, and the two consequences must be genuinely distinct rather than one point restated. Importance questions ask how much an event mattered within a longer story, which means saying what changed because of it rather than narrating it again. Choose the two options you know best, not the first two you read.
Budget by marks rather than by question count. On Paper 1 the 80 minutes against 52 marks works out at roughly a minute and a half per mark, which means about 25 minutes for the 16-mark source section and 55 for the thematic section; Paper 2 gives 105 minutes for 64 marks and Paper 3 gives 80 minutes for 52. Leave the final five minutes for checking and for the SPaG marks on the interpretations question. Wear a watch, because wall clocks are not always visible from every desk.
Spelling, punctuation, grammar and terminology carry four marks on the interpretations question and they are awarded independently of the argument, which makes them the cheapest marks on the paper. Learn the spellings that trip people up, write in full sentences with paragraph breaks, and avoid bullet points entirely. The other repeated losses are treating a source as if it were an interpretation, writing answers with no dates in them, and quoting the question without explaining it. Sort past mistakes by question type when revising; it is more useful than redoing whole papers.
