Rivers and coasts occupy a small corner of the key stage 3 geography programme of study, yet they carry a large share of the physical geography marks. The Department for Education programme, published on gov.uk in 2013, names hydrology and coasts directly, which means pupils are expected to explain landforms through processes rather than simply label them. The sections below follow a river from source to mouth, then turn to the coastline and the way people try to hold it in place.

A drainage basin is the whole area of land drained by a river and its tributaries, and the boundary between two basins is the watershed. Rain that lands on a slope has several routes: it can be intercepted by leaves, infiltrate the soil, run over the surface, or sink deeper and travel as groundwater. How fast water soaks away depends on the permeability of the rock beneath, so clay sheds water quickly while gravel swallows it. Many pupils picture a source as an obvious stream, when in fact it is often just a boggy hollow where water seeps out of the hillside.

Plot height against distance from source to mouth and you get the long profile, which is steep at the top and flattens into a concave curve lower down. Near the source the channel is narrow and shallow with a rough bed, so a large share of the water's energy is lost to friction. Tributaries add discharge downstream and the channel grows wider and deeper, which raises the hydraulic radius and usually the velocity as well. A common mistake is to read a calm-looking lower course as slow water, when a deep section often carries the fastest average flow.

Water wears away a channel in four ways. Hydraulic action is the sheer force of water driving air into cracks until rock is prised loose, whereas abrasion works like sandpaper as the load scrapes the bed and banks. Attrition grinds stones against each other, rounding them and shrinking them with every kilometre travelled, and solution dissolves rock such as limestone and chalk. Vertical erosion dominates the upper course and cuts the valley floor downwards, while lateral erosion dominates lower down and eats into the banks.

Eroded material travels downstream by traction, saltation, suspension and solution, and the mix shifts with the energy available. Traction rolls boulders along the bed, saltation bounces pebbles, suspension keeps silt and clay aloft, and solution carries dissolved minerals that nobody can see. Competence describes the largest particle a river can move, while capacity describes the total load, and both rise when discharge rises. Deposition therefore starts with the coarsest fraction, which is why gravel stays upstream and fine mud reaches the estuary.

Upper-course valleys are carved downwards, because vertical erosion cuts the bed while weathering and sheet wash lower the sides, leaving a V-shaped cross profile. Where a band of resistant rock lies across the channel, water pours over a step and a waterfall forms, and the plunge pool at its foot undermines the lip above. Once the overhanging cap collapses, the fall retreats upstream and leaves a steep-sided gorge in its wake. Interlocking spurs record the same stubbornness of hard rock, forcing the river to wind around rather than cut straight through.

Once the gradient eases, the channel begins to swing from side to side and meanders develop. Water accelerates around the outside of each bend, so erosion cuts a river cliff there while slower flow on the inside drops sand and gravel to build a slip-off slope. When a flood shortcuts the narrow neck between two bends, the old loop is sealed off by sediment at both ends and becomes an oxbow lake. Repeated overbank flooding spreads fine silt across the valley floor, building a floodplain and sometimes raising natural levees beside the channel.

A flood is less about how much rain falls than about how quickly that rain reaches the channel. A storm hydrograph plots rainfall as bars and discharge as a line, and the gap between the two peaks is the lag time, which shortens when water is delivered fast. Permeable rock, dry soil, woodland cover, gentle slopes and few built surfaces all delay the peak, whereas saturated ground, steep slopes and tarmac do the opposite. The Boscastle flood of 16 August 2004 shows the extreme case, with a steep confined valley and a converged channel turning intense rainfall into a surge within hours.

Wave energy starts with wind, and the stronger the wind and the longer the stretch of open water it crosses, the bigger the waves, with that distance known as the fetch. Britain faces the south-west, so prevailing winds deliver the most energetic seas to western and south-western coasts. The water that runs up the beach is the swash and the water that drains back is the backwash, and their balance decides whether a beach grows or shrinks. Constructive waves push sand ashore with a strong swash, while destructive storm waves drag it back and leave a steeper, narrower profile.

The outline of a coastline is decided first by how well the rock resists attack. Resistant granite or basalt stands out as headlands, while soft clay and sandstone are excavated into bays, and wave refraction then concentrates energy on the headlands and leaves the bays calmer. At the foot of a headland the sea cuts a notch which undermines the cliff above, so the face collapses back and leaves a steep cliff with a gently sloping wave-cut platform beneath it. Cracks enlarged by hydraulic action open into caves, join up into an arch, and finally leave a stack standing clear of the cliff.

Longshore drift is the main conveyor of beach sediment, because swash arrives at an angle while backwash returns straight down the slope, so material creeps along the shore in a zigzag. Where the coastline turns or a river mouth interrupts the flow, the drifting load is dropped and a spit grows out across the water. Bars form when sediment builds across a bay mouth and traps a lagoon behind it, and dunes only survive where marram grass holds the sand down. Sheltered, low-energy mudflats are colonised by salt marsh instead.

Coastal management splits into hard and soft approaches. Sea walls, groynes, rip rap, gabions and revetments hold the sea back and slow drift, acting quickly but costing a great deal to maintain. A groyne traps sediment on its up-drift side and starves the beach beyond it, which is why defences in one place can accelerate erosion in the next. Soft options such as beach nourishment, dune repair and managed realignment work with sediment movement, and the Medmerry scheme completed by the Environment Agency in 2013 deliberately returned farmland to tidal habitat.

The point of key stage 3 is explanation rather than vocabulary recall. The 2013 geography programme of study on gov.uk asks pupils to use detailed place-based exemplars to show how processes change landscapes, and that expectation carries straight into GCSE. AQA GCSE Geography (8035) treats rivers and coasts as physical geography units assessed through a named place, so command words matter: describe labels, explain chains processes, and evaluate weighs costs against benefits. Many students lose marks by naming a landform without ever saying how it formed.
