The Key Stage 3 weather and climate unit keeps returning to three skills: separating weather from climate in terms of time scale, explaining how air pressure drives wind, and turning the numbers on a climate graph into a plain statement. The national curriculum for England (Department for Education, gov.uk, published 2013, in force from September 2014) places this work inside a weather and climate framework, so students are expected to read meteorological data, account for how rain forms, and use evidence to compare places.
Weather is the state of the atmosphere at one place and one moment, and it can change within an hour. Climate is the average condition of a place over a long period, together with the range it swings through. The World Meteorological Organization treats thirty years as its standard reference period, and the current baseline runs from 1991 to 2020. A single cold afternoon tells you nothing about the trend of a thirty year average. Keep the two words apart in written answers, because a mixed-up subject line costs marks even when the rest of the sentence is correct.
Air pressure is the force air exerts on a unit of area, measured in hectopascals, with roughly 1013 hPa as the standard value at sea level. Weather charts join points of equal pressure with isobars, and the closer those lines sit together the steeper the pressure gradient and the stronger the wind. Air moves from high pressure towards low pressure. Wind direction is named after where the air comes from, so a westerly blows from the west. Sitting on the eastern side of the mid-latitude westerlies, the UK receives mild moist air from the Atlantic, and that single fact explains much of its day to day weather.
Every type of rain needs the same three steps: air rises, air cools, water vapour condenses and droplets grow heavy enough to fall. Relief rain occurs when moist air is forced over hills, cooling by roughly one degree Celsius per hundred metres of ascent until it saturates, which leaves the windward slope wet and the leeward slope in a rain shadow. Convectional rain comes from surface heating on summer afternoons, giving small areas of short heavy downpours. Frontal rain forms where warm and cold air meet and warm air rides up slowly over the colder wedge, producing wide cloud sheets and long spells of steady rain. A hill of 600 metres shows the arithmetic: air starting near 20 degrees Celsius with a dew point of 14 degrees loses about six degrees on the climb, so it saturates well before the summit, cloud forms partway up the slope, and the rain lands on the windward side.
The UK sits on the eastern edge of an ocean at the meeting point of tropical and polar air, which is why depressions cross it so often. The polar front jet stream, a band of very strong upper westerly wind, steers Atlantic depressions towards the British Isles, and each one drags a warm front and a cold front across the country in turn. Five air masses reach the UK, and their character follows from two questions: where did the air form, and did it travel over sea or land. Polar maritime air arrives cold and moist, tropical maritime air mild and moist, polar continental air cold and dry.
A climate graph puts monthly rainfall as bars in millimetres against monthly mean temperature as a line in degrees Celsius, with the months running across the horizontal axis. Read the temperature curve first: a July peak means the northern hemisphere and a January peak means the southern one. Then look at how the rainfall bars are spread, since that separates places with year round rain from summer maximum, winter maximum and dry regimes. Finish with the annual range, hottest month minus coldest, and the yearly rainfall total. Vague wording such as uneven rainfall earns little; state which season holds the rain.
A cold front is cold air pushing actively into warm air. The surface is steep, rain hugs the front itself, and once it passes the temperature drops, pressure rises and skies clear. A warm front is warm air climbing gently over cold air, with a shallow slope, rain falling ahead of the front, a wide rain belt and lighter, longer precipitation. On a synoptic chart a cold front is a line with triangles pointing the way it moves, while a warm front carries semicircles. Getting the rain belt on the wrong side of the front reverses every later step in the explanation.
A microclimate is the small-scale variation produced by slope, surface cover, buildings and aspect, which is why a playing field and the shade of a tree differ on the same afternoon. School surveys record temperature, humidity, wind speed and light at several sites at the same moment. Instruments follow fixed rules: a thermometer goes inside a Stevenson screen, painted white, louvred for ventilation, standing about 1.2 metres above grass so direct sun and ground radiation do not inflate the reading. A rain gauge stands upright on open ground with its rim about 30 centimetres up, clear of trees and walls that would shelter it.
Three numbers carry most of the evidence in geography: the mean describes the normal state, the extreme describes the risk, and the range describes how much a place swings. After a microclimate survey, tabulate the readings taken at the same time, average each site, compare the sites, and only then explain the pattern, because the reverse order turns data into decoration for a conclusion already decided. Units matter as well, since a millimetre and a degree cannot be compared. A large annual range points to continental influence, a small one to the moderating effect of the sea.
Climate change means a shift in the long-term statistics of the climate system, such as a rising thirty year mean or a changing frequency of extremes, while extreme weather describes how far one event sits from the normal. Neither a cold snap nor a single heatwave settles the question, because the evidence is the sequence, not the event. The greenhouse effect is a natural process, and without it the surface would be far colder than it is; what human activity changes is the concentration of greenhouse gases. KS3 only asks students to separate the natural effect from its human enhancement.
Command words do most of the work in geography. Describe asks only for what can be seen, explain demands a causal chain, and compare requires both cases plus the direction of the difference. At GCSE the mark schemes used by AQA, Edexcel and OCR reward the chain rather than the verdict: air is forced to rise, it cools, vapour condenses into cloud, and rain falls on the windward slope earns far more than a bare statement that hills cause rain. Answers that jump straight to a conclusion look complete to the student and still sit at the bottom of the band.
