Exam nerves are not a character flaw; they follow a mechanism you can watch and adjust. This piece works through twelve concrete links, from how arousal narrows working memory to how to split a revision list, sequence mock papers, reset sleep in the final fortnight and decide when to leave a question. Each link ends with an action you can copy and a mistake that shows up again and again.
Sweating palms, a racing heart and a tight stomach are ordinary adrenaline responses to a deadline. Many students read them as proof of inadequate preparation, when they only mark a rise in arousal. Moderate arousal sharpens attention; past a certain point it squeezes working memory, and steps you can do at the kitchen table disappear. If you have read a question twice without catching what it asks, you have crossed that line. Treat the physical signal as something to regulate rather than a verdict on your ability.
A large share of exam anxiety comes from vagueness rather than workload. Revise maths for an evening has no finish line, so you end the night feeling behind. Turning the same task into countable units makes progress visible and gives the day a shape. The usual mistake is writing chapter titles on the list, which still tells you nothing about completion. Write an action plus a quantity instead, and keep the list to three or five items.
Sustained focus rarely survives two hours, and the second hour is where most of the waste happens. Working in forty-five minute blocks with ten minute breaks is a rhythm students can actually keep for a term. The break is the part people get wrong: reaching for a phone pulls attention away and makes the restart expensive, whereas standing up, drinking water or looking out of the window costs nothing. Count four or five genuinely productive blocks a day as a good day.
Rereading notes produces familiarity, and familiarity is easily mistaken for mastery. Closing the book and writing the content out is the actual test, because the gaps show up immediately. Retrieval practice is unglamorous: read a section, shut it, write the key points and the first step of each derivation on blank paper, then check what is missing. Spacing matters as much as the act itself, since three passes on one day teach less than one pass on each of three days.
A mock paper earns its keep through what it exposes, not through the mark. Sit the whole paper under real timing without notes or pauses, then mark your own guesses before you look at the answers. Sorting errors by cause beats sorting by chapter: missing knowledge, misread question, arithmetic slip, ran out of time. Only the first category sends you back to content; the other three are fixed by routine. Students who treat every error as a knowledge gap tend to repeat the same paper forever.
Trading sleep for study time is usually paid for the next morning, and over a fortnight the total output falls. In the final two weeks, fix the times you go to bed and get up so the body is alert during exam hours. For a nine o'clock paper, put the hardest practice in that slot. An hour away from screens before bed, a cool dark room and getting up after twenty restless minutes do more than any sleep aid.
Breathing is one of the few levers that reaches the autonomic nervous system directly. Inhale for four counts through the nose, exhale for six through the mouth, keep the shoulders loose, and repeat ten to fifteen times, which takes about two minutes. A longer out-breath than in-breath slows the heart rate within a few cycles. Practise it in the weeks before so the body already knows the pattern; the first attempt in the exam hall rarely works.
Spend the first two minutes scanning the whole paper, noting the number of questions and the marks attached to each. Then divide the available time by marks rather than by questions, and write each question's ceiling in the margin. Do the questions you can start immediately so the marks you can earn are banked early, and keep the last ten minutes for the items you flagged. Splitting time equally is the classic error, because the high-tariff question then gets the least room.
If a question stalls for more than two minutes, leave it; staring burns time and mood without buying progress. Mark the number, jot the half-formed idea beside it, and the return visit costs you one reread instead of a fresh start. Come back in order of ease, easiest flag first, because a few minutes away often loosens the block. Writing down the given data and the relevant formula turns the question into a part-finished draft you can pick up later.
Where anxiety consistently affects performance, the exam system already has a route for it. JCQ's Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments includes provisions such as supervised rest breaks, assessed by the centre against evidence rather than granted on request. The evidence has to exist beforehand, which means a request in the final week is usually too late. Talk to the school's SENCo or exams officer early, and check the current JCQ guidance for deadlines and the exact wording of each arrangement.
Parents often turn concern into pressure by asking daily how revision is going. Concrete support works better: meals on time, a quiet room, and no conversations about results for the next few weeks. Peer comparison has almost no upside in the final month, while explaining a topic to a classmate does. If low mood, lost appetite or sleeplessness lasts more than a fortnight, that goes beyond ordinary nerves and belongs with the school's pastoral team or a GP.
Between two papers, comparing answers is the worst available use of the interval, since the script is already gone and the discussion only carries into the next exam. Half a day of light revision over the core list for the following subject is enough, with no new material. Eat and drink on schedule, because low blood sugar amplifies nerves. Once the last paper is done, take two or three days completely away from books before deciding anything about resits.
