Both universities close their UCAS deadline on 15 October. Invitations arrive during November and interviews run through December; Oxford states on its official page that shortlisted applicants for 2027 entry will be interviewed online in December 2026, with decisions released through UCAS on 12 January 2027.
Oxford describes the interview as an academic conversation about your subject, close in format to a short tutorial. Tutors watch how you respond to unfamiliar ideas and whether you can carry school material into material you have never seen. Cambridge puts the same point into its admissions criteria, where decisions rest on academic ability and potential. Neither university expects full syllabus coverage, and questions sitting outside A-Level or IB content are deliberate. What gets assessed is how you move once a hint arrives; applicants who revise obscure facts are preparing for the wrong test.
The calendar drives the preparation. The UCAS form goes in by 15 October, invitations arrive in November, interviews run through December, and results land in mid-January; Oxford has already fixed 12 January 2027 as its decision date. Working backwards leaves only late October and November as usable weeks, so the first mock belongs before any invitation arrives rather than in early December when little can still change.
Read the invitation email twice. Oxford runs a reallocation process, so an interview may come from a college you did not apply to, and the aim is to give every interviewee a comparable chance of an offer; it is not an error to argue about. The same email names the video platform, the connection test slot and the documents to have ready. Cambridge warns that recording or sharing interview and assessment questions is strictly prohibited, and that doing so can work against your own application.
Most questions start from something familiar and then tilt it. You may be asked to explain a basic idea, then to change one condition and say what happens to the conclusion; a function becomes its inverse, a frictionless slope gains friction. The work is to break the chain of reasoning into links and test which link fails under the new condition. Saying that judgement out loud is what wins credit, and the moment a hint arrives is usually the moment being assessed. Rehearsing the habit of splitting one question into three or four discussable pieces makes the real conversation far calmer.
Thinking aloud is not a stream of consciousness; it is three kinds of sentence, used on purpose. State the assumption you are making and why it lets you estimate a magnitude; name the formula you are using and the information that licenses it; flag a result that contradicts your intuition and say which sign or unit you will check. With those sentences in place a tutor can follow the reasoning and pull you back early. Students who stall are usually holding four or five steps in their head at once, and the fix is to say each one before moving on.
Being stuck is not the failure state; silence is. Admitting that a formula has slipped is safe as long as you then describe the route around it. Asking for the question to be repeated, for the range of a variable, or for thirty seconds to organise your thoughts are all normal requests in a real interview. The expensive mistake is inventing a plausible conclusion and stacking wrong reasoning on top of it, which an experienced interviewer hears within a minute. Practise splitting an unfamiliar problem into the half you can do and the half you cannot.
Maths interviews rarely need heavy computation; they need legible work and mental arithmetic that survives pressure. Whether you write on a shared board or on paper held to the camera, put the reason beside each line instead of leaving a bare answer. On a question with a parameter, plug in two concrete numbers first to see which way the result moves, then return to the general case. Domain restrictions and rounding conditions are where marks disappear, and examiners set them deliberately. Three timed questions beat ten untimed ones as preparation.
Physics and chemistry interviews often open with an estimate or a graph. An everyday scenario asking for an order of magnitude tests whether you dare set a reasonable approximation and can say where it stops being valid. Graph questions test whether slope and area are tied to the right physical quantities. Biology leans towards experimental design: how the control group is built, why the sample size is what it is, which step to inspect first when results drift. Many candidates skip the error discussion and jump to a conclusion, which is where the marks go.
Humanities and social science interviews usually begin with a short passage or a claim. First establish what the author is actually arguing, then offer a counterexample and say how far it holds. Economics questions often ask you to split a policy into short-run and long-run effects, or across income groups. Concrete cases carry more weight than terminology, and a candidate who only repeats textbook conclusions gets pushed until the preparation runs out. Take three theories you have studied, find one real counterexample for each, and rehearse a two-minute answer.
A mock interview exposes habits, not topics. Find an adult or a senior student who knows the subject, run it at full length without interruptions, and review afterwards rather than during. Three layers need practice: reasoning on subject questions, recovering after being cut off, and the technical side of talking to a camera. Oxford advises applicants to revisit the selection criteria for their course and to look at the official sample questions, both closer to the real thing than any commercial question bank. Cambridge states plainly that it neither supports nor encourages fee-charging interview coaching companies, since they hold no information beyond what the university publishes.
Treat the technical setup as a separate rehearsal. Test the connection, camera angle and microphone echo beforehand, and clear the desk down to paper, pen, water and anything the question allows. Silence the phone and put it away, because a notification pop-up breaks a line of reasoning that took a minute to build. Begin by checking that you are audible, speak slightly slower than usual, and finish sentences. If the connection drops, say so in the chat window and reconnect; interviewers have seen it before. A short follow-up email is optional, though it helps if something went wrong on the day.
Marks are lost through habits rather than hard questions. A memorised answer collapses at the first follow-up, because it belongs to someone else and carries no second layer. Answering before thinking hides the reasoning that is being scored. Arguing about the definition of a term wastes the whole slot; accept the interviewer's definition and explain how your conclusion changes under it. Talking too fast, sitting in silence and answering in one word all get noticed. Fixing those four habits is worth more than one extra topic, and once the interview ends the decision waits until January, so give the following weeks back to school work.
