Families choosing a sixth form programme usually narrow it down to two routes: the IB Diploma or three A levels. Both are accepted by universities in Britain, the United States and across Asia, yet they demand very different work week by week. The comparison below follows structure, scoring, subject choice and university applications, using the published rules from the IBO and Ofqual.
The IB Diploma requires one subject from each of six groups, normally three at higher level and three at standard level; the IBO sets higher level at 240 teaching hours and standard level at 150, with four higher level subjects as the maximum. A levels work differently, because most students in England take three subjects across two years and sit every paper at the end; Ofqual describes reformed A levels as linear qualifications for exactly that reason. Fewer subjects does not mean an easier fortnight, since the same hours are compressed into fewer timetabled lessons.
IB's six groups cover language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics and the arts. The first five are compulsory, while the arts group can be replaced by a second subject from another group, which is how a science-heavy student ends up carrying both physics and chemistry; two languages are unavoidable inside that structure. A levels have no compulsory subjects at all, so a student can take three sciences or mix maths, economics and history. The real constraint is the timetable, because many international schools run only a dozen A level subjects.
Difficulty is built into the IB design, since the same subject exists at higher and standard level with 90 teaching hours between them and extra paper sections reserved for higher level candidates. Students must collect three higher level subjects while also satisfying degree requirements, and medicine, engineering or economics usually name the subjects they expect. A levels have no tiers at all, with grades running from A* to E on one shared paper. Treating an IB standard level course as an AS level is a common mistake, because SL still runs for two full years.
IB grades come from two sources, external examinations and work marked inside the school. The IBO states that examinations form the basis of assessment for most courses, while language orals, geography fieldwork, science practicals and maths investigations are teacher assessed and then moderated by the IB; internal assessment is not a soft option, because the criteria are applied as strictly as in the exams. Reform A levels moved the other way and keep non-exam assessment only where practical skills cannot be tested in a written paper.
The IB core is three components, and missing any one of them means no diploma. Theory of knowledge is assessed through an exhibition and a 1,600 word essay, while the extended essay is an independent 4,000 word piece of research that the IBO requires of every student; creativity, activity and service carries no points, yet seven learning outcomes must be evidenced and a CAS project completed. The hours involved are routinely underestimated, and the extended essay in particular demands a self-chosen question, real sources and proper referencing.
The IB diploma tops out at 45 points, with six subjects at a maximum of seven each plus up to three points from the core. The IBO's passing conditions go well beyond the 24 point threshold, since every subject, TOK and the extended essay must be graded, no subject may score below 2, no more than two grade 2s and three grade 3s or below are allowed, higher level subjects must total at least 12 points, and CAS must be complete. A strong total with weak higher level grades still fails, whereas A levels produce three separate grades that universities turn into conditions subject by subject.
等级规则:A* 到 E 与 AS 解耦
A level grades run from A* to E, and reformed specifications are examined at the end of the second year rather than in modules. The AS has been decoupled, so Ofqual confirms that AS results no longer count towards the A level, with the first reformed subjects taught from September 2015; some schools still enter students in Year 12 to check progress and support predicted grades, but those marks do not feed the final result. Assuming a weak AS can be repaired in Year 13 misunderstands how the two qualifications now relate.
Subject freedom shapes how the two years actually feel. The IB structure keeps every student inside six areas, so a humanities student still studies maths while a science student still writes essays and speaks a language aloud, and that breadth builds real writing stamina. A levels allow genuine specialisation instead, since three sciences are perfectly legal; the risk is that a choice made at sixteen is expensive to undo. Choosing on interest alone ignores degree requirements, stamina and what the school actually teaches.
IB workload is spread across the two years. Extended essay planning starts in the first year, TOK work sits alongside normal lessons, and every subject has its own internal assessment deadline, so students juggle five or six long tasks at once; A levels concentrate the pressure into eighteen months of lessons followed by one dense revision period and a single exam season. Which is harder depends on the student, because self-directed scheduling suits some teenagers and defeats others who need an external rhythm.
UK applications run through UCAS, where universities read subject grades and three predicted A level grades remain the standard currency. IB applicants present a total score plus their higher level combination, and many UK offers name both a points total and specific higher level grades; US applications weigh four years of transcripts, course rigour and essays, which is where the extended essay and TOK give IB students usable material. Crossing the two systems is workable as long as the requirements are known two years in advance.
Switching mid-course costs more than families expect. Moving from the IB to A levels usually wastes work already done on the core, and the receiving school has to be able to slot a student into linear courses in Year 13; the reverse move is harder still, because six subjects plus the core leave little room for catch-up and most schools only accept it before Year 12. Difficulty is not the only variable, since assessment style and writing stamina matter just as much.
Three questions do most of the work. Is the student visibly lopsided, happy to drop everything outside three subjects, in which case A levels fit better? Can they carry a long project without supervision, since the extended essay and internal assessments run for months on end; and do the target degrees name specific subjects, as medicine and engineering almost always do? When two answers point the same way the choice is usually settled, and what remains is whether the school teaches that programme well.
