CAIE IGCSE
Reading comprehension in Cambridge IGCSE English is not one skill but four, packed into a single two-hour paper. Some questions reward close attention to one clause, others reward the ability to compress three paragraphs into a sentence of your own; the language question asks why a writer chose a particular word, and the extended response asks you to speak in someone else's voice. Candidates who treat the paper as one long comprehension test usually run out of time, or they produce answers that are accurate but far too general to earn credit.
Paper 1
Paper 1 of 0500 is a reading paper worth 80 marks and 50 per cent of the qualification, and it runs for two hours. Three compulsory questions sit on three texts: Text A and Text B are 700 to 750 words each, while Text C is shorter at 500 to 650. Question 1 combines comprehension with a summary for 30 marks, Question 2 pairs short answers with a language task for 25, and Question 3 is an extended response for another 25; the syllabus suggests roughly 15 minutes of reading, which leaves about 105 minutes of writing. Dictionaries are not permitted, so unfamiliar vocabulary has to be handled through context and word formation. In the 2024 to 2026 version the spelling and grammar marks were removed from this paper, which shifts the whole weighting onto understanding and expression.
The first pass through a text is about mapping, not memorising. A discursive article usually does only a few things paragraph by paragraph: it makes a claim, offers an example, concedes a counter-argument, cites a figure, or closes the argument. Candidates who translate sentence by sentence often reach paragraph four with no idea where paragraph one sat on the page. A cheaper method is to read the questions first and then sweep Text A and Text C with those questions in mind, while Text B can be skimmed through its first and last sentences because it only feeds the summary. A three-word functional label in the margin is worth more than a page of highlighter, and any adjective in quotation marks is worth noting for the language question.
The comprehension part of Question 1 is worth 15 marks and tests explicit meaning, implicit attitude and the selection of information. Individual items are usually worth one or two marks, so a short phrase that can be marked on its own is enough. Many candidates copy an entire sentence and earn a single point, because examiners can credit only what is clearly separated. Locating the relevant line first and then compressing it into your own short sentence, with one quoted keyword if needed, is far more reliable. When a question says explain or give two reasons, the number of required points is already fixed, and items on Text A generally follow the order of the text.
隐含意义题要抓态度词而不是猜
隐含意义题问的往往是说话人的态度,而不是事实本身。信号词通常很小,apparently、so-called、admittedly、surprisingly 都在提示作者与这句话保持距离。看到引号里的形容词,先判断它是褒义、贬义还是中性。很多学生以为隐含意义要靠猜,其实答案总能落回一个具体的词或一处对比。答题时把那个词写出来,再说它暗示了什么,两句话就够。不要写 the writer is being sarcastic 这种空判断,阅卷时需要看到依据。Text C 的短答题里这类问法出现得最多。写不出依据时,说明读的那一句还不是答案句。
Questions about implicit meaning are usually about attitude rather than fact. The signals are small: apparently, so-called, admittedly and surprisingly all suggest that the writer is holding a sentence at arm's length. When an adjective appears in quotation marks, decide whether it carries approval, disapproval or neutrality. Guessing is the usual approach, yet the answer almost always comes back to one specific word or one contrast. Name the word, then say what it implies, and two sentences will do. A bare judgement such as the writer is being sarcastic earns nothing unless the evidence sits beside it.
The summary in Question 1 carries 10 reading marks and 5 writing marks, and 120 words is a ceiling rather than a target. The task usually lists three or four required points, each of which has to appear once; choosing only the point you find interesting loses marks that were easy to take. Only material from Text B that answers the question belongs in the summary, so examples, quotations and decorative description are cut. Rewriting in your own words is a hard requirement, and lifted phrases are treated as copying. The answer has to be continuous prose, without bullet points or headings, so count the words at the end and remove adverbs first. Filling all 120 words is not the aim; squeezing every point into one long sentence is the more common way to lose the writing marks.
Q2 短答题的答案长度跟着分值走
Question 2 的前半部分是针对 Text C 的短答,共 10 分。题目会明确要求 answer in your own words 或 use evidence from the text,两种要求对应不同的写法。1 分题写一个短语,2 分题写两个点,3 分题才需要一句完整解释。常见的错误是给 1 分题写三行,时间被吃掉,后面的语言分析写不完。Text C 只有 500 到 650 词,答案位置集中,读的时候可以把相关行号记在旁边。题目要求引用时,引文要短,最好不超过六个词。答完立刻看下一题,不要在措辞上反复修改。分值决定篇幅,这条规则在整张卷子上都成立。
The short-answer section of Question 2 deals with Text C and is worth 10 marks. Instructions such as answer in your own words or use evidence from the text point to different styles of response, and following them literally is part of the task. A one-mark item takes a phrase, a two-mark item takes two separate points, and only a three-mark item needs a full explanation. Writing three lines for a one-mark question is a familiar way to run out of time before the language task even begins. Text C is short enough for line numbers to be worth noting in the margin while reading, and any quotation should stay under about six words.
The language task runs to 200 or 300 words and rewards an understanding of how a writer creates effects and influences readers. Terminology earns nothing on its own; the marks sit in the chain that links a word to an effect and then to a reader's response. Quote a specific word or phrase, describe the picture, sound or feeling it produces, and then say what the reader is left with. Naming a metaphor without explaining it is the single most common way to score zero on an otherwise sensible paragraph. Three or four well-chosen moments, at 60 to 80 words each, beat a list of ten devices skimmed from the whole text, and the analysis can end with the last quotation rather than a summary.
Question 3 asks for 250 to 350 words in a named form: letter, report, journal, speech, interview or article. Before writing, settle who is speaking, who is being addressed and why the piece exists, because those three answers shape the opening line. A letter needs a salutation, a report needs headings, and a speech needs an audience in the first sentence. The content has to grow out of the views in Text C rather than introduce a fresh topic, and a task that asks you to speak as a named character also changes person and tone. The usual failure is a general essay with no recognisable form, which loses format marks before the argument is even read. A three-line plan is quicker than starting cold.
Two hours sounds generous until one question overruns and takes the next one with it. Reading the three texts takes about 15 minutes; Question 1 with its 30 marks deserves 30 to 35 minutes, Question 2 about 30, Question 3 about 30, and 5 to 10 minutes stay for checking. Question 1 carries the highest tariff and two texts, so in practice it is tighter than the extended response. Because 120 words is a hard ceiling, counting the summary immediately after writing it saves a rushed deletion later. Wrists and watches matter here: candidates who spend everything on the language task often reach Question 3 with 150 words and half the marks gone, when adding missing points is far cheaper than rewriting a paragraph.
The current 0500 syllabus covers the 2024, 2025 and 2026 exam series, and it removed the writing accuracy marks from Paper 1 altogether. Spelling, punctuation and grammar no longer carry separate credit in Question 1f or Question 3, so the marks rest on understanding and on how well an effect is explained. Cambridge International has also published the 2027 to 2029 syllabus, in which Paper 1 moves from three compulsory questions to four and the mark allocation is adjusted accordingly. Anyone planning a retake should work to the syllabus for the year of their exam, and older past papers remain useful because text types and reading skills have not changed. The version number on the cover settles which rules apply, and a school booklet is not always current.
What examiners see most often is not weak English but an answer that never lands on the point being asked. Copied sentences in the comprehension, an overlong summary, a language task made of device names, and an extended response with no recognisable form account for most of the lost marks. Time control is the other recurring problem, with the final question started ten minutes before the end. A summary that drops one required point from Text B cannot recover those reading marks through good phrasing, and handwriting matters because scripts are scanned, so joined-up scrawl can be read as a spelling error. Limited practice on whole papers, under time, is the only way these habits surface.
