In Cambridge IGCSE First Language English 0500, narrative writing sits in Paper 2 Section B, where two of the four composition titles ask for a story; the prompt is a single line and the whole piece has to work within 350 to 450 words. Marks are not awarded for decoration. The level descriptions reward a plot that is defined and developed, characters who make choices, and a climax that the earlier details have earned; most candidates who lose marks here have a structural problem rather than a vocabulary problem. What follows takes the syllabus wording apart and turns it into decisions you can make in the exam room.

The qualification is built from two written papers, Paper 1 for reading and Paper 2 for directed writing and composition; each lasts two hours, carries 80 marks and contributes 50 per cent of the final grade, so neither can be treated as an afterthought. Writing objectives account for 80 per cent of Paper 2 but only 20 per cent of Paper 1, which is why one weak composition pulls down a whole paper. Narrative belongs to Section B and is worth 40 marks by itself, half of that paper. A few centres enter candidates for the Component 3 portfolio instead, where three assignments of 500 to 800 words replace the examination and the third is assessed as narrative writing.

Section B

Four titles are printed and candidates answer one; two ask for description and two for narrative, with a word range of 350 to 450. A response well under 350 words rarely reaches the upper bands for content and structure, simply because there is not enough material to develop anything. The prompt is only a line or a short situation, so the opening, the turn and the ending are all decisions the candidate makes under time pressure. Choosing badly is expensive: a narrative title handled as a static description gives the reader images but no movement.

Five writing objectives sit behind every composition mark, from articulating experience and expressing what is thought and felt, through organising material for deliberate effect, to choosing vocabulary and sentence shapes that suit the context. W4 asks whether the language fits the purpose and engages the reader, and W5 covers spelling, punctuation and grammar. All 40 marks in Section B come from those five lines, so a likeable story is not a separate category. The telling word in W3 is appropriate: an unusual word that jars costs more than it earns.

The level descriptions are unusually concrete about narrative, and the top band asks for a plot that is well defined and strongly developed, with description, characterisation and an effective climax supported by convincing details. One band down, the plot only has to be defined and developed; two bands down, it has to be relevant and cohesive, with some characterisation and a sense of scene. Examiners work from those sentences rather than from the number of similes in the piece. A climax that arrives without preparation reads as an accident, however dramatic the wording.

The first paragraph has one job, which is to put the reader in a particular place at a particular moment, with someone present and something already under way. Weather is the commonest waste of an opening unless the weather itself blocks or drives the action. A line of dialogue or a small physical action does that work faster than three sentences of scene-setting. Keep the paragraph to three or four sentences so the rest of the story has room to move.

At this length there is no room for a subplot, and the simpler the spine the safer the result. A workable shape places someone in a situation that is already wrong, makes it worse, and forces a choice at the worst possible moment. One turn is enough, placed around two thirds of the way through; earlier than that and the rest of the story has nothing to do. The climax should follow from that choice rather than from an accident that happens to the character.

A character in a short narrative needs a want and an obstacle rather than a biography. A student trying to reach a classroom before the door closes, or a visitor who cannot make herself ring the bell, gives the reader something to follow at once. Two sentences of appearance are enough unless a physical detail changes what can happen. Passive characters at the decisive moment flatten the story, because somebody else ends up doing the deciding.

感官细节与具体名词

描写的力气应该花在具体名词与动词上,而不是靠形容词堆叠。写铁门在身后合上、锁舌弹了一下,比写气氛非常紧张有效得多。五种感官不必全用,挑两种与这一场最相关的就够。细节要为事件服务,一段与事件无关的描写会直接把节奏拖慢。写完把形容词划掉一半,看句子是否还站得住。站得住说明名词选对了,站不住说明原来只有形容词在撑。这个检查很快,两分钟能过一遍。

Description earns its place through precise nouns and verbs rather than a pile of adjectives. The gate closing behind you and the bolt snapping shut does more work than a sentence announcing that the atmosphere was tense. Two senses are usually enough, chosen for whatever the scene actually turns on; detail that no event depends on slows the story down. Try cutting half the adjectives and see which sentences survive.

Tense drift is the most common mechanical failure in short narratives, with a past-tense opening sliding into the present at the tense moment. Past tense is the default and the safer choice; present tense works only when the writer wants the reader inside the action as it happens. First person brings the reader close, third person allows distance and a wider frame, and switching between them inside 400 words almost always confuses the timeline. Keep the interior thoughts of minor characters out of a third-person narrative.

句子长短与段落节奏

紧张程度靠句子的长短来推,长句适合铺垫,短句适合收束。高潮段落里连着三个短句,读者会自然加快。转折之前放一个稍长的句子,呼吸就被压住了。段落不要平均分配,关键的一刻值得单独占一段。句首不要总是同一个主语,主语换一换,画面才动得起来。写完之后朗读一遍,读不顺的地方通常就是句子太长或者从句套得太深。这两处改完,整篇的节奏会明显不一样。

Pace is carried by sentence length, with longer sentences setting up and short ones landing. Three short sentences in a row at the climax speed the reader up without any instruction to do so. A longer sentence immediately before the turn holds the breath. Paragraphing matters as well: the decisive moment deserves a paragraph of its own rather than a line buried in the middle.

Paper 2 runs for two hours and carries two tasks of equal value: directed writing of 250 to 350 words in Section A and a composition of 350 to 450 words in Section B. Dividing time by marks rather than by task order protects the composition, which needs roughly 55 minutes including planning. Three minutes spent on a five-line plot outline before writing usually removes the structural problems that cost whole bands. Keep four minutes at the end for tense, agreement and full stops, because no dictionary is allowed in either paper.

Four losses appear again and again: a plot that never really develops, a climax delivered by coincidence, drifting tense, and an extra paragraph of explanation after the ending. None of them is a vocabulary problem, and none requires learning new words. A useful exercise is to take an old script and rewrite only the climax and the ending, replacing an accident with a choice. Two pieces a week with one full revision each changes more than a fresh piece every day.
