This guide follows the age bands used in the English school system, because those bands also mark real changes in how children learn. Nursery and Reception rely on play and imitation. Key Stage 1 is where decoding catches up with listening. Key Stage 2 builds the network of facts and procedures that later reasoning depends on. Abstract argument only becomes reliable after eleven. Self-management becomes the main variable after sixteen. Each section pairs the phase with what the official framework expects and with something a parent can do this week.
EYFS 法定框架(英国教育部 gov.uk 发布的 early years foundation stage statutory framework,2024 版)把 3 到 5 岁的学习分成七个领域,其中 communication and language、physical development、personal social and emotional development 是三个核心领域,另外四个是 literacy、mathematics、understanding the world、expressive arts and design。
The statutory EYFS framework published on gov.uk sets out seven areas of learning for children aged three to five. Three are prime areas: communication and language, physical development, and personal, social and emotional development. The other four are literacy, mathematics, understanding the world, and expressive arts and design. Provision is play based rather than subject based, so language and number work happens through stories, sand, blocks and role play. What matters at this age is following a two step instruction, staying with one activity for a short stretch, and finishing a sentence. Grip strength and hand control develop long before formal handwriting, and pushing writing too early is hard to reverse.
National Curriculum 的 KS1 覆盖 Year 1 和 Year 2,年龄 5 到 7 岁。
Key Stage 1 covers Years 1 and 2, ages five to seven, under the National Curriculum published by the Department for Education. At the end of Year 1 children take the phonics screening check, introduced in 2012, which asks them to decode a list of real and invented words. Listening comprehension runs ahead of reading comprehension for several years, so the two need separate practice. A book that is far above a child's decoding level pushes them into guessing from pictures and memorising whole sentences by shape. That guessing habit is difficult to undo, and it hides the real gap until longer texts appear.
Key Stage 2 ends with SATs in Year 6, covering English reading, grammar, punctuation and spelling, and mathematics. Between seven and eleven children reason well about objects they can see and handle, and less well about rules stated purely in the abstract. Fractions and ratio land more easily when they start with paper strips or a number line than with a definition. Facts such as times tables, irregular verb forms and map symbols stay available only if they are pulled out of memory repeatedly. Reading a worked example is not the same skill as producing the first line of a solution unaided.
At secondary school the number of teachers jumps from one to eight or more, and homework changes from finishing a page to meeting a standard. Abstract reasoning starts to appear around eleven, but the spread within one class is wide, and a child who is fluent in one subject may still be concrete in another. The common failure here is organisational rather than intellectual: three exercise books, two deadlines and a lost timetable. A single weekly sheet where the student writes every task and orders it is a cheap intervention that pays off across subjects, provided the ordering is genuinely theirs.
GCSE exams are taken at the end of Year 11, usually in nine or ten subjects, set by exam boards regulated by Ofqual. The demand shifts from understanding to retrieval under time pressure: recognising a method in a textbook is easier than writing it out with no prompt. Students who spend the whole revision period making neat notes often arrive at the paper unable to produce the marked points. A grade 4 in English and mathematics is a condition of funding for many 16 to 19 courses, so a near miss in either subject changes the shape of the next two years.
Most A Level students take three subjects over two years, with exams at the end of the second year. The IB Diploma requires six subjects plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS, with a maximum of 45 points. From sixteen, the difference between students is mostly in how they use unsupervised time. Teachers stop checking every exercise, so locating the gap becomes the student's job. A student who can name the chapter that is failing moves faster than one who reports that the whole subject is bad, because only the first can act on it.
Attention span grows with age, which is why lesson structure changes across phases. A nursery activity lasts a few minutes. A Key Stage 1 lesson is broken into two or three short segments with a change of format between them. Only by GCSE and A Level is a single 45 minute block of independent work realistic. Splitting a long task into pieces with visible endpoints works better than extending the hours. Two hours at a desk with a phone within reach usually contain less than twenty minutes of real focus, and the ledger in the parent's head records the two hours.
Memory behaves the same way at every age: new material is lost fastest in the first few days, and the way to keep it is to retrieve it just before it fades. The Education Endowment Foundation toolkit ranks retrieval practice and spaced review among the highest impact, lowest cost approaches in its evidence base. In practice, one chapter reviewed three times on separate days beats one three hour reread the night before. Rereading feels productive because the text is familiar, and familiarity is not the same as availability at the moment of the exam.
Young children need feedback that is specific and immediate: the letter is reversed is useful, be careful is not. By Key Stage 3 the feedback should move from the answer to the reasoning, asking which assumption produced the wrong line. From GCSE upward, the most useful source of feedback is the mark scheme itself, used by the student to score their own answer point by point. The EEF evidence base puts feedback among the stronger influences on attainment, and it also stresses that how feedback is given matters more than how often it is repeated.
Homework changes shape with age. In primary school its main function is routine: a fixed start time, a packed bag, a signed sheet. After eleven the parent moves from checking answers to asking about progress, and the student owns the plan. Checking every line teaches the child to wait for a checker. By the sixth form the weekly schedule should be the student's own, with parents stepping in only when time genuinely collides. A teenager whose revision has been timetabled by someone else for five years tends to struggle in the first term of university.
Sleep need falls with age, and the adolescent body clock shifts later for biological reasons, which is why a 16 year old is genuinely not sleepy at ten in the evening. A phone that delays sleep onset reduces the consolidation that happens overnight. Writing load should also match the phase: twenty to thirty minutes of continuous handwriting is a reasonable ceiling in late primary, while full essays and long answers belong to secondary. Extra tuition that eats into sleep trades memory for practice volume, and the practice ledger looks better than the result.
Learning ahead and closing gaps are different operations. Learning ahead moves a topic down a year, which looks like an advantage until the question requires abstract reasoning. Closing gaps repairs the prerequisite, which looks slow and makes every later chapter cheaper. The test is simple: can the child explain the core idea of the previous chapter in their own words. That question exposes the weak link quickly, which is also why it is often skipped in favour of buying next term's workbook.
