The knowledge framework in TOK is not a glossary to memorise. It is the set of four lenses, scope, perspectives, methods and tools, and ethics, that the IBO guide uses to organise the suggested knowledge questions for every theme and area of knowledge. Once the lenses are clear, exhibition objects and essay paragraphs stop feeling like guesswork. What follows unpacks each lens and then connects it to the two assessment tasks.
The IBO guide presents the knowledge framework as four common elements: scope, perspectives, methods and tools, and ethics. Suggested knowledge questions for every theme and area of knowledge are grouped under these headings, which is what makes comparison across disciplines possible. The guide is explicit that the questions are suggestions rather than a checklist to be completed in order, so teachers may swap in their own examples. What is not optional is asking all four kinds of question rather than labelling four subheadings and moving on.
Scope asks where a particular area of knowledge sits within the totality of human knowledge. The guide suggests questions about what motivates inquiry in that field, which practical problems it can solve, which questions remain genuinely open, and why the field matters at all. The weakest paragraphs turn scope into background information, usually a definition followed by a few dates. Stronger work pins the question to a live disagreement, such as how much weight to give indirect detection evidence in particle physics, or how mathematicians trade off shorter proofs against stronger axioms. A reader should finish the paragraph knowing what the field still cannot settle.
Perspectives deals with the influence of standpoint and context on knowledge. The guide splits it into the student's own perspective and what shapes it, the way different people or groups approach the same field, and the historical developments that changed how knowledge looks over time. Useful questions ask whether some types of knowledge are less open to interpretation than others, and whether understanding other knowers is essential to knowing at all. This lens earns its marks in the human sciences, where two researchers can read one data set and reach opposite conclusions. It is not a licence to insert a personal opinion; the point is to show where a standpoint comes from and what it hides.
Methods and tools examines the machinery of knowledge production. The guide groups methods, tools and practices together, covering conceptual frameworks, established research traditions, and the methodologies of formal disciplines. It also asks about cognitive and material tools, and about how those tools shift as technology develops. Questions include what assumptions underlie a method of inquiry, whether good evidence means the same thing across disciplines and cultures, and how much material instruments matter. A telescope, a gene sequencer or a statistical package can change which questions are answerable at all. Naming one such instrument and showing what it made possible beats a paragraph of general praise for method.
Ethics covers the values built into inquiry itself. The guide points to the relationship between facts and values, and to the way ethical and epistemic values are woven into the pursuit of knowledge. It also links knowledge to inequality and injustice, which students often skip. One warning in the guide matters for marks: discussion should stay on the knowledge questions implied by an ethical issue rather than turning into a debate about the issue. Gene editing, facial recognition and the release of archived records all fit the same four questions about constraints, responsibility, action and changing values. Moralising without a knowledge question loses the thread.
Knowledge questions are the working tool of the course: contestable questions about knowledge itself. The guide's examples are deliberately plain, asking what counts as good evidence for a claim, whether some types of knowledge are less open to interpretation, or what constraints should apply to the pursuit of knowledge. A sentence qualifies when it is contestable, when it asks about knowledge rather than about a fact, and when it can travel across disciplines. Two historians disagreeing in a DP history lesson becomes a question about how we choose between expert judgements. A population forecast in a newspaper becomes a question about why an admittedly false model can still be useful.
The structure decides what the four lenses are applied to. TOK is a core element of the DP, and schools are required to devote at least 100 hours of class time to it. The curriculum has three parts: a core theme called knowledge and the knower, which asks students to reflect on themselves as knowers; two optional themes chosen from five, namely knowledge and technology, language, politics, religion, or indigenous societies; and five compulsory areas of knowledge, history, the human sciences, the natural sciences, mathematics, and the arts. The framework runs across all three parts, not just the areas of knowledge. Students who skip the structure tend to write reflections instead of analysis.
The guide also lists twelve concepts that thread through the whole course: certainty, culture, evidence, explanation, interpretation, justification, objectivity, perspective, power, responsibility, truth and values. They are not examined as definitions; they surface inside the prescribed essay titles and the exhibition prompts. In practice you choose an object, ask which concept it best illustrates, and then use that concept to interrogate the prompt. A news report on vaccine hesitancy usually turns on evidence and responsibility, while a revised textbook raises questions of power and culture. One concept per object is enough, and the terminology should stay fixed from first paragraph to last.
Comparison is where the framework earns its keep. Mathematics works inside formal systems, justifies by proof, and carries its ethical disputes at the point of application. The natural sciences rely on repeatable experiment and peer review, with material instruments setting the limits of observation. History depends on primary sources and source criticism, and its perspective lens cannot be avoided because archives themselves are selective. The arts have no single method, and evaluation rests on critical traditions and shared judgement. Asking one question across two areas produces the comparison the essay rubric rewards far more reliably than two parallel descriptions.
The exhibition is internally assessed by the teacher and externally moderated by the IB. Students choose one IA prompt, select three real objects, and explain each object's specific real-world context, why it was included, and how it links to the prompt. Everything goes into a single file with the prompt as its title, images of the objects, and references. The maximum is 950 words in total, and anything beyond that is not read. The task is worth 10 marks and one third of the final TOK grade. The prompt must be taken word for word from the prescribed list. Three objects of the same type usually collapse into one argument, which is exactly what the descriptors warn against.
The essay is externally assessed by IB examiners, marked out of 10, and worth two thirds of the final TOK grade. Students cannot choose their own question; they pick one of the six prescribed titles issued by the IB for that session. The limit is 1,600 words, submitted in standard 12 point type and double spaced. A strong essay unpacks the knowledge question in the title, states a position, tests it against a counterclaim, and anchors both in specific examples. Titles often fix the areas of knowledge to be used, which is where many answers drift. Length is not a virtue here, since words past the limit are ignored.
Most lost marks cluster in a few places. Students label the four elements, write a general paragraph under each, and never let the question touch the example. Scope becomes background, ethics becomes moral judgement, and perspectives becomes personal opinion, which is the same failure in three costumes. An exhibition that describes three objects without a line connecting them to the prompt reads as three mini-essays. An essay with a claim and no counterclaim stays descriptive. A workable order is to fix the object or title first, ask one question from each lens, and then build the piece around the two questions that create the most tension. Concrete details, dates, places, model numbers and sources, do the rest.
