The first chapter of the CAIE IGCSE Biology 0610 syllabus looks like the easiest part of the course, yet it is where careful students still drop marks. The syllabus fixes the wording of the seven characteristics, and mark schemes reward that wording rather than a sensible paraphrase; missing phrases such as nutrient molecules, metabolism or dry mass costs a mark even when the biology behind the answer is sound. This guide works through sections 1.1 to 1.3 in syllabus order, separates the pairs that get confused, and ends with a revision rhythm you can actually keep.

The syllabus states all seven characteristics as formal definitions, and the wording is what earns the mark. Movement covers any action that changes the position of an organism or part of it, which is why a shoot bending towards light counts just as much as a runner crossing a line; respiration is defined as the chemical reactions in cells that break down nutrient molecules and release energy for metabolism. Examiners rarely accept a loose paraphrase such as breathing or getting energy, because both miss the cellular level the definition is testing. Learn the English sentence rather than a translation of it.

Growth is defined as a permanent increase in size and dry mass, and both halves of that definition matter. Dry mass is the mass left after water has been driven off, so a dry seed that swells overnight in water has grown larger on the outside while its dry mass has not moved at all; only new tissue built from assimilated material counts. The word permanent rules out the height difference between early morning and late evening, which is compression of the spine rather than growth. Examiners see the same shortfall most years: candidates write that an organism gets bigger and never mention dry mass, which caps the answer at half the available marks.

Respiration is a cellular process, while breathing is a mechanical one, and the two are only linked when oxygen is involved. Gas exchange moves oxygen and carbon dioxide across surfaces such as alveoli or gills by diffusion, whereas respiration breaks down nutrient molecules inside the cytoplasm and mitochondria to release energy for metabolism. In anaerobic conditions the release of energy continues without oxygen, producing alcohol and carbon dioxide in yeast and lactic acid in exercising muscle, which builds an oxygen debt and needs extra oxygen afterwards. A common error is writing that food provides energy directly; the energy is released when nutrient molecules are broken down, and food is simply the material that supplies them.

Excretion removes the waste products of metabolism, while egestion passes out material that was never absorbed and never took part in metabolism at all. In humans the lungs excrete carbon dioxide and the kidneys excrete urea together with excess water and ions, and the syllabus lists those two routes rather than sweat glands, which lose only small amounts of water and salts. A frequent slip is treating faeces as excretory waste because it looks unpleasant, when in fact the gut contents never crossed into a cell. Once you decide whether a substance entered cellular metabolism, the classification follows without memorising two separate lists.

Sensitivity is the ability to detect and respond to changes in the internal or external environment, and mark schemes usually look for a named stimulus and a named response. A shoot growing towards light does not need a nervous system: light alters the distribution of auxin at the tip, cells on the shaded side elongate more, and the stem bends towards the source; roots respond to gravity in the opposite way. Candidates often describe light itself as the stimulus, when the change in light intensity or direction is the more precise answer. Naming a plant example alongside the definition is usually what turns a half mark into a full one.

A species is a group of organisms that can reproduce to produce fertile offspring, and fertile is the word that decides most exam cases. Horses and donkeys can mate and produce a mule, but mules are normally infertile, so the parents remain separate species rather than one unusually variable species. Looking alike is weaker evidence than breeding successfully, which is why dog breeds of very different sizes still count as one species. A common error is calling the mule a new species; a hybrid that cannot form a breeding population does not qualify, however healthy it looks.

The binomial system is an internationally agreed convention in which a scientific name has two parts, the genus and the species. The genus takes a capital letter, the species epithet is written entirely in lower case, and the whole name is printed in italics or underlined when handwritten. Shared genus names point to closer relationship, which is why Panthera leo and Panthera tigris sit in one genus while the species parts keep them apart. Answers lose marks for capitalising both words or for dropping the italics, so treat the format as part of the content rather than decoration.

A dichotomous key splits organisms at each step into two mutually exclusive descriptions, and the reader keeps choosing one until a single name is reached. Each pair should be observable at the same time on the same specimen, so counting legs or checking for wings works better than judging behaviour, and a numerical feature such as six legs beats a vague phrase like many legs. The most frequent fault is writing three alternatives in one couplet, which stops being dichotomous altogether. Numbering the pairs 1a and 1b, then walking the whole route yourself, exposes dead ends before the examiner finds them.

The five-kingdom system places organisms in animal, plant, fungus, prokaryote and protoctist groups. Prokaryotes have no true nucleus, protoctists are mostly single-celled eukaryotes such as Amoeba and Chlamydomonas, and fungi have cell walls made of chitin and feed saprophytically. Viruses are excluded because they consist only of a protein coat and genetic material, and cannot reproduce without a host cell. Mixing bacteria into the protoctists is a standard slip, and the presence or absence of a true nucleus settles the comparison quickly.

Vertebrates are grouped as mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish, judged by body covering, temperature regulation and method of reproduction. Arthropods split into myriapods, insects, arachnids and crustaceans, and counting legs is the quickest discriminator: insects have six legs and three body sections, arachnids have eight legs and two sections, crustaceans carry two pairs of antennae, and myriapods have many segments each bearing legs. Calling a spider an insect is the classic error, and the leg count corrects it in one step. Wings are weak evidence on their own, since not every adult insect has them.

Every candidate sits three components. Core candidates take Paper 1, a 45-minute multiple-choice paper worth 40 marks and 30 per cent, and Paper 3, a 1 hour 15 minute written paper worth 80 marks and 50 per cent, then choose either the practical test or the alternative to practical for the remaining 20 per cent. Extended candidates swap in Papers 2 and 4, which carry the same marks and timing but test the supplement as well, and can reach A*. The syllabus also states that candidates taught only the core content cannot score above grade C, which is worth checking before option choices are made. Assessment objectives split as 50 per cent knowledge and understanding, 30 per cent handling information and problem solving, and 20 per cent experimental skills.

The content here is short but definition-heavy, so spreading it across four weeks beats one long session. In the first fortnight, write out the seven characteristics from memory every day for ten minutes and check each sentence against the syllabus wording, rewriting the whole line when a keyword is missing. Midway through, group the species definition, binomial rules and keys into one task: build a key for five familiar organisms, then follow it from the first couplet to the last name. In the final week, work through two past multiple-choice papers on this topic and sort your mistakes by concept rather than noting the right letters. Marking shows the same pattern each year, with half-correct definitions that are missing one keyword, which is why the weekly check has to be word by word.
