The last week before an exam is usually spent trying to learn everything again, and that is the wrong instinct. With seven days left, covering more material is worth far less than protecting the marks you can already earn. What follows is a schedule that runs on the hours you already have, with no new resources and no longer days.
Treat the week as project management rather than study. An hour spent stabilising a topic you can already handle usually protects two or three marks, while an hour on an untouched chapter buys a handful of vocabulary items and little else. Write one verdict per subject, solid, shaky or written off, keep it on a single sheet, and do not revise it mid-week unless a mock clearly overturns it.
Most students claim ten hours a day, but net hours are what remains after meals, travel, drift and dead time. Write the seven days out honestly and the real figure is often closer to thirty than seventy, which is why "I study all day" rarely survives contact with a timetable. Ratios only become meaningful once that total exists on paper.
Label every topic in every subject before touching another past paper. Must-hold topics have a fixed question shape, a clear procedure and an eighty percent success rate for you; contestable ones you can attempt but lose marks on through carelessness or timing; anything needing a rebuilt framework gets written off for now. Review in that order rather than in textbook page order, which is how students spend the last three days on a topic that never appears.
A specification lists what can be examined but says nothing about how often. Sort the last three years of past papers by topic, rerun anything appearing three times or more, and note the answer structure each question type expects. Mark schemes matter more than the questions themselves because they state precisely where each mark sits, including the method and unit marks that long answers routinely miss.
Replace coarse blocks like "maths in the morning" with timed units that have an output attached. Ninety minutes plus twenty suits continuous reasoning such as multi-stage mechanics or quantitative chemistry, while forty-five plus ten suits recall, tidying and formula practice. Write the output as question numbers and a marking task, then take the break away from the desk, because a phone break does not restore attention.
Concentration is usually highest two to three hours after waking, which is when derivation-heavy work belongs. Pushing the hardest topic to eight in the evening usually produces half an hour of staring and then a switch to something easy as reassurance. Putting it in the first morning block also removes the day's main source of procrastination, since the least appealing task is already done.
The real drain in the final week is switching rather than difficulty: maths reminds you of two physics chapters, physics reminds you of the chemistry practical. Keep one A4 sheet per subject with must-hold and contestable topics on the front and wrong question numbers on the back, and cross items off as they clear. Anything not on the sheet stays closed until the exams are over, including newly shared notes and unofficial prediction papers.
Schedule at least two full mocks and place one of them at the same time of day as the real paper, so the body learns when to be sharp. Time it, close the notes, write in exam format and mark it yourself against the scheme rather than against your memory of the lesson. The score matters less than what the timing reveals about which question swallowed the minutes.
Reserve a quarter to a third of each day for wrong answers instead of pouring every hour into new questions. Redo them with the solution covered, then write down the exact failure: misread condition, half-remembered formula, missing unit conversion or a skipped stage. Understanding an answer and producing it under pressure are different skills, and the gap between them is where the recoverable marks sit.
The final week is not the time to redesign your sleep pattern. Fix the wake time so exam morning needs no willpower and go to bed when actually tired, rather than at an aspirational hour that produces two hours of lying awake. Test any caffeine or energy drink well before exam day, and remember that a late night charges its revision back as next-day concentration.
The last two days add no new topics; they rerun must-hold questions, walk through formulas and definitions, and settle logistics. Write an entry list per subject covering venue, arrival time, permitted items and calculator rules, since some WJEC and CAIE mathematics papers restrict calculator functions. Keep the list in the pencil case so exam morning needs no decisions.
JCQ's Information for Candidates for 2025-2026 is explicit that unauthorised items such as phones in the exam room count as malpractice even when unused, and results can be withdrawn. Hand the phone over before entering the building rather than gambling on a pocket, and arrive with margin because late entry is refused beyond the published limit. None of this is about knowledge, yet it costs candidates marks every year.
If one idea survives the week, let it be this: the competition is not over how much is learned but over how little time is lost to switching and worry. Sheets, timed blocks, mocks and error logs cover the mechanics, and three minutes each evening recording what actually got done keeps tomorrow honest. Walk into the hall holding a ticked-off checklist rather than an unfinished textbook.
