Topic 10 Electricity and circuits 真正反复出现在计算题里的式子其实只有五六个:Q = It、E = QV、V = IR、P = IV、E = Pt。

Electricity rewards precision more than memory. Edexcel 1PH0 Topic 10 sits on Paper 2, and the same five or six relationships turn up year after year in different costumes. What separates a grade 7 from a grade 4 is rarely the formula itself; it is whether the student notices that the time is given in minutes, or that the supply voltage is shared across two resistors rather than delivered to each of them.

Current is simply charge per second, and the unit follows from that definition: one ampere is one coulomb passing a point each second. Many students lose the mark here without noticing, because the arithmetic is easy and the unit conversion is not. A current of 250 mA must become 0.25 A before it goes anywhere near a resistance calculation.

Potential difference describes the energy carried by each coulomb, which is why one volt equals one joule per coulomb. Exam answers that omit the unit tend to lose the mark even when the number is right. A voltmeter belongs in parallel with the component; wired in series it stops the circuit working and the reading becomes meaningless.

电阻定义为 R = V / I,单位欧姆,1 Ω 表示加 1 V 时通过 1 A。

Resistance tells you how many volts are needed to drive one ampere, and the relationship is linear only while the temperature stays constant. Students who treat resistance as something that shrinks when the voltage drops will mis-predict every second part of a question. For a filament lamp the assumption fails outright, which is exactly why the specification asks for its characteristic curve.

In series the current has only one route, so it is identical through every component while the supply voltage is shared. The largest resistance takes the largest share of the potential difference, and the total is just the sum. This is why one broken filament switches off the whole string.

Parallel branches each see the full supply voltage, so the currents add and the combined resistance falls below the smallest branch. Houses are wired this way for the obvious reason: switching off one appliance must not switch off the rest. Adding resistances as if they were in series is the single most common arithmetic error in this topic.

The core practical compares a fixed resistor with a filament lamp, and the two graphs behave differently for a physical reason rather than a mathematical one. A lamp heats up as the current rises, so its resistance climbs and the curve bends. When a question asks for the resistance at one point, divide that point's voltage by its current; the gradient of the whole line is not the answer.

A diode conducts in one direction only, a thermistor loses resistance as it warms, and an LDR loses resistance as light intensity rises. Questions usually hand you the graph and ask for a resistance at a stated condition. Explaining the purpose of a component means tracing how its changing resistance alters the current or the potential difference elsewhere in the circuit.

功率是能量转移的速率,电学里用 P = I V,配合 V = I R 还能写成 P = I² R,后者专门用来算电阻发热。

Power is energy per second, and the two forms of the equation answer different questions: P = IV suits a stated supply voltage, while P = I²R isolates heating in a resistor. Doubling the current doubles the power but quadruples the heating, which is the whole reason the grid transmits at high voltage. Electricity bills work in kilowatt-hours, so 2000 W for three hours is six units.

UK mains is 230 V at 50 Hz, alternating, with one complete cycle every 0.02 s. The three-core cable carries live, neutral and earth, and the colours are fixed: brown, blue, and green with yellow stripes. Switches and fuses belong in the live wire so that the appliance is dead when the circuit is broken.

A fuse melts when the current exceeds its rating, so it must sit slightly above the normal operating current rather than far above it. Earthing gives a fault current a low-resistance path, which blows the fuse quickly and keeps the metal case safe to touch. Double-insulated appliances need no earth because there is no exposed metal to become live.

Step-up transformers raise the voltage to around 400 kV for transmission, then step-down transformers bring it back to 230 V before it reaches a house. The reason is the I²R term: at higher voltage the same power needs less current, and the heating falls with the square of that reduction. Transformers rely on electromagnetic induction, so they work with alternating current only.

Almost every lost mark in this topic traces back to a conversion, a misread circuit, or an explanation that states a result without a reason. Write the equation first, substitute second, and attach units to the answer; the working marks live in that middle step. Explanations need a chain: what changes, why it changes, and what follows from it. Stating the conclusion alone earns nothing.
