Electrolysis questions at GCSE are rarely about reciting a table of products. Edexcel GCSE Chemistry (1CH0) places electrolysis inside the chemical changes topic and separates molten compounds from aqueous solutions, which is exactly where most marks are lost. This piece compares the two systems side by side: inert and copper electrodes, molten lead bromide against copper sulfate solution, brine against dilute sulfuric acid.
Electrolysis means using a direct current to break an ionic compound down into simpler substances. What decides whether the circuit works is ion mobility, because a solid ionic lattice holds its ions in fixed positions and conducts nothing at all. Melt the compound or dissolve it in water and the ions become free to move, which is the single reason the lamp lights only once the electrolyte is molten or aqueous.
The power supply splits the two electrodes into a positive and a negative one. At the cathode, connected to the negative terminal, positive ions arrive and gain electrons, and that gain is called reduction; at the anode the negative ions hand electrons back to the circuit, which is oxidation. A reliable way to fix the direction is that electrons leave the negative terminal, so the cathode is always the electrode supplying electrons to ions.
Molten lead bromide is the molten case Edexcel uses most often. Once it melts and conducts, a silvery bead of lead collects at the cathode and a brown vapour of bromine appears at the anode, which is why the apparatus belongs in a fume cupboard. Both products come straight out of the compound itself with no water present, so this is the cleanest case to reason about before tackling solutions.
An aqueous solution offers both metal ions and hydrogen ions at the cathode, so only one reduction can win. The rule follows the reactivity series: ions of potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, aluminium and zinc are too stable to be discharged, so hydrogen ions take the electrons and hydrogen gas is released instead. Copper, silver and gold sit below hydrogen, their ions accept electrons readily, and the metal is deposited directly on the electrode.
The anode rule is shorter: look for halide ions first. Where chloride, bromide or iodide ions are present they lose electrons in preference to anything else, so electrolysing brine gives chlorine at the positive electrode. When no halide is present, water or hydroxide ions discharge instead and oxygen is released, which covers both copper sulfate solution and dilute sulfuric acid.
With inert carbon rods in copper sulfate solution the two electrodes behave very differently. Copper is deposited as a pink solid at the cathode while bubbles of oxygen appear at the anode, and the blue colour fades as copper ions leave the solution. Because the rods take no part in the reaction their masses hardly change, so all the marks come from linking each observation to the ion that moved.
Swap the carbon rods for copper sheets and the whole picture shifts. Copper atoms at the anode lose electrons and dissolve into the solution, so the anode loses mass, while copper ions at the cathode gain electrons and deposit, so the cathode gains mass. The blue colour barely changes because the anode replaces the ions the cathode removes, and this balance is what makes the arrangement useful for purifying copper.
Brine is the one common example that yields three useful products at once. Hydrogen comes off the cathode, chlorine off the anode, and sodium hydroxide is left behind in the solution. Industry keeps the anode and cathode compartments apart, because chlorine reacts with sodium hydroxide to form sodium chlorate or bleach and the products would no longer be pure.
A half equation describes one electrode only: write the ion first, then balance the electrons. Reduction goes on the left of the arrow, as in Cu2+ plus 2e- giving Cu, while oxidation places the electrons on the right, as in two Cl- giving Cl2 plus 2e-. Before the two half equations can be combined the number of electrons must match, which is where copper needs two, silver one and aluminium three.
One of the Edexcel core practicals electrolyses copper sulfate solution with copper electrodes and measures the change in mass. Polish two copper sheets, weigh them, immerse them and pass a steady current for a set time. Wash each electrode, dry it thoroughly and weigh again, because leftover solution on the surface adds mass and spoils the result.
Electroplating and copper refining look like different trades but share one arrangement. In plating, the object to be coated is the cathode, the plating metal is the anode, and the electrolyte supplies ions of that metal, which is how nickel, chromium and silver coatings are applied for appearance and corrosion resistance. Refining simply runs the same cell with impure copper as the anode and pure copper as the cathode.
Explanation questions on this topic reward particles and movement rather than length. For a molten electrolyte, say the ions are free to move, not simply that ions are present; for a solid, say the ions are held in a fixed lattice and cannot move. When comparing molten and aqueous systems, bring in water and the competition from hydrogen and hydroxide ions, because those are the words the mark scheme looks for.
