At key stage 3, English literature stops being a subject about what happens and becomes a subject about how a writer makes something happen. The programmes of study published by the Department for Education ask students to analyse language, structure and the writer's intentions, using short quotations as evidence. Many students begin year 7 by retelling the plot in fluent English and still lose marks, because a summary shows reading but not analysis. What follows is a set of small, repeatable moves: choose a quotation, look at the words inside it, name the technique only when the words support it, and then explain what a reader notices as a result.
A response carries no weight without a short quotation, because the reader needs something exact to check your claim against. Many students believe that a clear summary of events counts as analysis, yet a summary only proves that the book has been read; marks come from what you notice inside one line. Pick a quotation that can support your point alone, ideally one with a forceful verb or a surprising adjective, and keep it under about ten words so that each word can be examined. Then explain one word inside it immediately, rather than sliding back into plot.
Swapping one verb changes what a reader feels, which is why word level analysis sits at the centre of key stage 3 work. He walked into the room and he barged into the room carry completely different information about intention, and the second version tells you something about the character before anyone speaks. Many students write that the writer uses powerful adjectives without saying what the power consists of. Name the word, then say what its connotations are and what would be lost if a synonym replaced it.
An image works because it is remembered as a picture rather than as information, and repetition is what turns a detail into a pattern. A window that stays shut in the first chapter and opens in the last carries a meaning that neither scene carries alone. Sensory detail matters for a similar reason: rust, damp and cold are felt before they are understood, so a reader becomes alert without being told to be. Many students assume imagery has to be ornate, when an ordinary object repeated at the right moments does more work than a decorative simile.
A simile admits that a comparison is being made, while a metaphor states it as fact, and that difference in distance changes the tone of the line. Calling a character's eyes lamps points to brightness, guidance or something mechanical being switched on, and which one you choose determines what you claim about the character. Personification usually transfers human intention onto a setting, so a wind that claws at a door makes the weather feel hostile rather than merely strong. Writing that a metaphor is used tells a reader nothing; naming the shared quality does.
Sound effects are easy to miss in silent reading, yet writers count syllables on purpose. Alliteration pushes words into a run, so a line can feel hurried or hammered depending on how tight the consonants sit together. Sibilance suits wind, snakes and lowered voices, and onomatopoeia brings a noise straight into the sentence, quickly but cheaply if it is repeated. Many students note that a line rhymes without saying whether the rhythm becomes steadier or more urgent, and that judgement is exactly what earns the mark.
Structure is about why information arrives in that order, not about what the order contains. An opening decides the position a reader starts from, and a single sentence in the middle can make every earlier description mean something else. A text that ends on its opening image closes a circle, which often leaves a reader with a sense of being trapped rather than resolved. Name the position precisely, such as the final line of the third section, because vague reference to the middle of the story proves nothing.
Characterisation is usually built from what can be observed rather than from what is announced. The way a character speaks, pauses and chooses words reveals class, age and mood, and a repeated gesture such as straightening a cuff does more than three sentences saying the character is nervous. Reactions of other people work as evidence too, since a step backwards tells a reader that someone is intimidating before any explanation arrives. Many students state that a character is selfish without pointing to the line that produced that judgement.
Who tells the story decides what a reader is allowed to know. First person narration brings intimacy but also brings the narrator's bias, while omniscient third person can move between minds at the cost of closeness. Unreliable narration, which key stage 3 students usually meet in year 9, works because a reader gradually notices more than the speaker does. When a child describes events at home, the details may be exact while the understanding is not, and that gap is where analysis begins.
A setting is not a backdrop but a device for managing mood. Weather often prepares a turn in the story, and a shift from light near a window to dark in a corridor changes what a reader expects next. Space carries information as well: a low ceiling presses down on a character, while an empty square leaves someone exposed, and some writers deliberately set a cheerful scene against a bleak event so that the contrast feels colder than either part alone.
Context covers when a text was written, the world it was published into and the arguments its author was answering. It can explain why a text returns to certain questions, but it cannot replace reading, and the programmes of study expect context to sit behind textual evidence rather than in front of it. Many students fill a paragraph with historical background and quote nothing, which rarely scores well. Use the quotation first, then use context to explain why the issue mattered when the book appeared.
A dependable analytical paragraph does three things: it makes a precise observation, offers a quotation, and explains the effect on a reader. The observation should be anchored to a word or a position, not to a general impression, and the quotation should be copied exactly rather than tidied up. Effect means what a reader is led to feel or conclude, not praise for the writer's talent. Test the paragraph afterwards by removing the quotation; if the point still stands on its own, the evidence was never really used.
The most common losses in literature work are not grammatical. One is retelling the plot in fluent sentences that never explain how the writing works; the next is piling up technique names without unpacking any of them; the third is a confident claim with nothing to check it against. Many students assume that more terminology looks more advanced, yet what a marker sees is a list of remembered labels. Fix it by pairing every term with a sentence saying what it means in this particular line, then delete any claim that no quotation supports.
