A-Level
Most families settle the A-Level combination in the first term of Year 12 and only discover the consequences two years later, when a shortlist of courses turns out to be closed to them. Subject requirements live on individual course pages, not in league tables. What follows works through the main destination subjects, separates hard requirements from preferences, and looks at how three A-Levels compare with four in practice.
Course pages separate two kinds of information, and mixing them up is the usual source of wasted choices. Required subjects are pass or fail conditions: miss one and the application fails at the first screen, while recommended or helpful subjects carry weight only when tutors compare applicants with similar grades. Read the essential list first, then preferred and useful, and line up three to five target courses side by side. The subjects that appear in every essential list are the real gate.
Oxford's medicine page states A*AA at A-Level, with an A in Chemistry and an A in at least one of Biology, Physics, Mathematics or Further Mathematics, so Chemistry is not a preference but a condition: without it the file is never read. Biology is the commonest second science because the first-year syllabus leans heavily on physiology and cell biology, while Physics or Mathematics pays off in data handling and statistics. UCAT sits outside the subject choice entirely, yet a strong three-grade profile still does not survive a subject mismatch at the first screening stage.
Oxford lists A*A*A for Chemistry, with both top grades in science subjects or mathematics, and both Chemistry and Mathematics required, which rules out the popular chemistry, biology and one essay subject mix. Pharmacy, biochemistry and materials science follow similar lines, generally asking for chemistry plus a second science; replacing mathematics with a second biology because it feels more familiar closes chemistry courses later on. Tutors know where the modelling work bites in the third year, and the requirement reflects that.
Engineering, physics and materials courses almost always require Mathematics, while Further Mathematics varies by institution: some Cambridge and Imperial courses list it as a firm requirement, others call it strongly recommended, and the gap often sits at college or stream level rather than in the headline offer. Further Maths is not mainly about pre-learning first-year content, it builds speed at turning a physical situation into a differential equation. Where a school does not offer it, course pages normally accept an explanation, but that explanation has to describe school policy rather than personal preference.
LSE's BSc Economics asks for A*AA with the A* in Mathematics; Mathematics is required, Further Mathematics desirable, and A-Level Economics is not a condition at all. That explains a pattern families find surprising: applicants with no school economics can be admitted, while applicants without mathematics cannot be considered, and the same page sets GCSE English Language and Mathematics at grade 6/B or above. Warwick and Manchester phrase it differently but point the same way, and finance, accounting and actuarial routes follow the same logic.
更可靠的做法是打开informedchoices.ac.uk,输入你的三门科目,看它能打开哪些学位。
Until 2019 the Russell Group published an annual list of facilitating subjects: mathematics, further mathematics, English literature, physics, biology, chemistry, geography, history and languages. The Department for Education's guidance on 16 to 18 accountability measures records the change: the list was withdrawn and replaced by an interactive site where students look up subjects by degree. Advice built on the old list still circulates widely, even though official guidance moved on years ago. The current tool at informedchoices.ac.uk takes three A-Levels and returns the degrees they keep open.
Computing course pages generally require Mathematics, sometimes Further Mathematics, and only then mention programming experience as an advantage. The order matters, because a portfolio cannot replace a mathematics grade even though it can separate applicants holding identical offers; time spent building projects while mathematics stalls at grade B is a familiar misallocation. Quality varies too, and one project whose data structure choices you can defend outweighs ten tutorial rebuilds. Data science and AI master's courses usually go on to check linear algebra and probability records.
History, law, politics and sociology degrees rarely name a required subject, but they do state a preference for essay-based preparation. English literature, history, politics and religious studies all sit in that group. Mathematics is underrated here: nearly every Russell Group university accepts it as a third subject, and it becomes a working skill once quantitative methods appear in the syllabus. Two essay subjects plus mathematics tends to read stronger than three of the same kind. A language helps directly for European studies and international relations, though it is seldom mandatory.
Most offers rest on three subjects. LSE sets out its approach on its own pages: with four or more A-Levels the expectation is A*AA plus a pass in the fourth, and that fourth subject does not carry the A*, so it is a cost to maintain rather than a bonus. AS results still inform some decisions but weigh less than predicted grades, and splitting effort across a fourth subject often pulls the three core grades down a notch. A fourth is justified when the target degree straddles two fields, or when Further Mathematics is unavailable at school and another science fills the gap.
The standard mistake is inferring subjects from a degree title. Biomedical engineering sounds biological, yet its pages usually ask for mathematics and physics. Psychology reads as an arts subject, while most BSc routes require mathematics or biology. Business management appears open to everything, though quantitative modules at selective schools still favour mathematics. The check is slow but reliable: open the entry requirements section, copy the required and preferred lines, then look at how the first-year core modules are assessed. Two similarly named degrees can ask for entirely different preparation.
GCSE conditions sit underneath the A-Level requirements, and LSE's economics page sets English Language and Mathematics at grade 6/B minimum while asking for several GCSEs at 7 to 9. Medicine, education and nursing add separate GCSE science conditions. Treating GCSEs as a formality and only getting serious in Year 12 ignores that those grades are already fixed on the record, and English Language is the hardest to repair late: resit cycles are long and some universities discount resit results.
UCAS runs two deadlines. Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses close on 15 October, and everything else closes in January. The subject decision has to be settled before that October date simply because a personal statement needs named modules, and a statement without them reads thin. Admissions tests crowd the same window: UCAT is sat in summer, mathematics tests in autumn. Putting those dates in a calendar works better than rearranging subjects mid-application.
The last step is a check, not a decision. Write the three or four subjects down, open each target course page and mark required subjects as met or not met. Two or more misses mean changing the combination is more realistic than changing the ambition. A single missing preference can be explained in the statement or the reference. Requirements vary widely between universities for the same degree, and across five courses two or three usually remain open.
