The KS2 science programmes of study run to a few dozen pages, and they turn into very specific questions at the kitchen table: why seedlings lean towards the window, why a shadow gets longer through the afternoon, why the bulb stays dark. The DfE programmes of study for key stages 1 and 2 (DFE-00182-2013, published 2013, updated in May 2015, in force from September 2016 for years 1 to 10) set content out year by year and insist that working scientifically is taught through that content rather than as a separate lesson. Practical work is part of the syllabus, not an extra. Each of the twelve investigations below uses kitchen or stationery materials and targets one named objective that children should be able to describe, tabulate and explain, and the recording habit matters as much as the result.
Year 3 pupils observe how seeds and bulbs grow into mature plants and find out what plants need to stay healthy. Two identical clear cups, wet kitchen paper and three mung beans in each will do, with one cup on a bright windowsill and the other sealed inside a shoe box. Measure the shoot daily at the same time and record millimetres against the day in a three-column table; change one variable only, because a cup that moves and also gets different water tells you nothing at all. Children often assume germination needs light, whereas the seed's own food store does most of the work and light matters mainly once the shoot appears.
Year 3 light starts with shadows: they form when light is blocked, and they change with the position of the source. Stand a pencil in modelling clay, hold a torch at the same height at 10 cm, 20 cm and 30 cm, and measure the shadow each time. Three readings are enough for children to see that a closer torch makes a longer shadow; keep the torch angle fixed, since a tilted torch changes both length and direction and the numbers stop being comparable. The programme of study carries a safety note about never looking directly at the Sun, even through dark glasses, so this stays indoors; asking why the evening shadow is longer than the midday one links the investigation forward to the rotation of the Earth.
Year 3 forces and magnets compare whether magnets attract objects through different materials, then group materials by whether they respond. A fridge magnet, a paper clip and a stack of sticky notes will do: add one sheet at a time up to ten and note when the clip drops. Repeat with foil, a plastic card and a wooden ruler, and most children conclude for themselves that iron and steel respond while aluminium and plastic do not. British coins are a trap, because most current coins have a steel core and stick while older copper coins do not; write the conclusion as a number of sheets rather than a word like strong, and state the grouping criterion so children know what they are comparing.
Year 3 rocks compares hardness and permeability and introduces fossils as evidence of living things preserved in rock. Buy a small granite, limestone and slate sample, scratch each with a copper coin and then an iron nail, and place five drops of water on each to time absorption. Hardness order and permeability order need not match, which is why they get separate rows in the table; permeable is not soft: a porous rock can drink water quickly and still resist a scratch. A fossil photograph and the question of why it sits in sedimentary rock links the topic towards evolution in Year 6, and the comparison table does more work than any definition.
Year 4 states of matter groups materials as solids, liquids or gases and looks at changes of state on heating and cooling. Half a cup of water in the freezer, checked hourly, gives a freezing curve, and ice cubes on a plate checked every five minutes give a melting curve. Keep the thermometer in the ice and water mixture rather than in the air above it, or the readings lag behind; the visible mist above a kettle is tiny droplets, not water vapour, and that mix-up tends to survive until latent heat at GCSE. Plot temperature against time and the flat section during freezing becomes the most interesting part, since temperature holds steady while the state keeps changing.
Year 4 sound links vibration to pitch and amplitude to volume. Three rubber bands of different thickness stretched across a small box, plucked in turn, show how the rate of vibration changes the note, while a gentle and a firm pluck of one band show the change in loudness. Four identical glasses filled to different heights and tapped with the back of a spoon give a scale children can order by ear. A harder hit raises volume only, and confusing that with a higher note is the usual slip; touch the rim to feel the vibration stop exactly when the sound stops, which convinces far more than an explanation.
Year 4 electricity covers building simple series circuits and testing materials as conductors or insulators. One 1.5 V cell, a bulb holder, two crocodile clips and a length of wire are enough: light the bulb first, then bridge the gap with a pencil lead, a coin, a rubber and a plastic ruler in turn. Most failures come from a clip biting the insulation instead of the metal, or from clips that never touch, and the child then concludes that the material blocks current. Series circuits only are required at Year 4, with parallel circuits waiting until Year 6; explain a dark bulb by whether the circuit is closed rather than by calling a material bad, and keep everything on 1.5 V cells away from mains sockets.
Year 4 living things and their habitats asks pupils to group living things by observable features and to describe a simple food chain. A string square of 50 cm on a balcony or a patch of grass, with ten minutes of recording, gives a species count that can be compared with a shaded patch nearby. Differences in light and moisture change the count more than children expect, which is why two squares beat one. Snails and earthworms are not insects, and the test is leg count and body segments; arrows in a food chain show the direction of energy flow, and reversing them is a mistake that often survives into secondary school.
Year 5 Earth and space describes the relative motion of Earth, Sun and Moon and uses it to explain day and night. A stick in the ground and a sheet of paper marked hourly from nine until three give six shadow tips that form an arc. The shortest shadow falls near midday but rarely at exactly twelve, because of British Summer Time, and that gap is a useful way into local time and time zones. Day and night come from rotation rather than from the orbit, and mixing the two is the usual slip at this age; asking why summer shadows are shorter opens the tilt explanation, and measuring a child's own shadow instead of a stick keeps the interest up.
Year 5 properties and changes of materials separates dissolving from mixing and from chemical change, and asks whether a change can be reversed. Four cups of warm water with salt, sugar, flour and sand show the difference in one lesson: the first two disappear, flour clouds the water, sand settles, and filter paper then separates only some of them. Calling dissolving disappearance leaves children unable to say where the salt went, so leave the salt solution on a windowsill until the crystals return. Reversibility gives a second test, since melted ice refreezes while a baked cake does not; two sentences cover the reversible and irreversible pair.
Year 6 light explains that objects are seen because light travels in straight lines to the eye, and that shadows share the shape of the objects casting them. Three cards with holes in a line, lit from one end, transmit light only while the holes align, and a one centimetre shift stops the beam. A shoebox with a pinhole and tracing paper produces an inverted image, exactly as straight-line travel predicts. Children expect the image to be upright and blame the equipment when it is not; the programme of study also asks for a periscope with two mirrors at 45 degrees, and building it settles the geometry faster than any diagram.
Year 6 evolution and inheritance covers change over time, fossils as evidence, offspring that resemble but do not copy their parents, and adaptation leading to evolution. A set of dog photographs sorted by ear shape, muzzle length and build shows inherited variation inside one species, and a Jurassic ammonite beside a living nautilus raises the same question about similarity and difference. Adaptation is not an animal deciding to change, but the survival and reproduction of individuals whose inherited features happen to suit the environment. The programmes of study state that genes and chromosomes are not required at this stage, so the selection story is enough; record everything in three columns of variable, reading and unit, since a missing unit is the most common loss at KS2.
