Many students treat revision as reading the book again with a neater notebook, then wonder why the mark refuses to move. The usual problem is not memory but isolation: facts sit side by side with no link between them, so a question phrased in an unfamiliar way finds nothing to attach to. What follows is a practical sequence, from the first node to the weekly check that keeps the whole thing alive.
A single fact tells you what something is; a network tells you when to reach for it and where it clashes with a neighbouring idea. Knowing the quadratic formula by heart settles one step, while the question usually asks you to choose between factorising and the formula, and to read the discriminant. A workable test is whether you can move from one concept to three related ones and name each relation out loud, which is exactly what an unfamiliar wording demands.
There is no need to start at page one; begin with the concept a chapter keeps returning to, such as energy, the derivative, supply and demand, or an enzyme. Around it write three questions that must be answerable: how it is defined, what limits it, and which type of problem it solves. If those three cannot fill a line, the chapter has been memorised as vocabulary rather than understood, and the later branches will have nothing to hang from.
A textbook contents page already gives you a hierarchy, so use chapter titles as the first level instead of inventing a taxonomy of your own. The AQA specification for GCSE Combined Science (8464) is organised into twenty-four topics, and its six papers each carry one sixth of the marks, which is why the contents page doubles as an exam map. Copying that outline onto the first page of your notebook gives every later fact a fixed address, and an unfamiliar question then has somewhere to land.
A mind map branches outward without labelling what the branches mean, while a concept map puts a verb on every arrow: causes, equals, requires, contradicts. For subjects built on causation and conditions the labelled version pays off, because writing that photosynthesis and respiration depend on each other forces a judgement that two parallel branches never do. Karpicke and Blunt, writing in Science in 2011, compared retrieval practice with concept mapping and found the testing itself carried the larger gain.
The back of a card needs three things rather than a copied definition: the conditions under which the relation holds, the unit of the answer, and what happens at the boundary. In physics a wrong unit usually signals a confused formula, and a dimensional check catches it in ten seconds. Cards that carry only a conclusion look tidy and fail the moment the context shifts, which is why examiners' wording is worth copying word for word.
Psychological Science in the Public Interest
Close the book after a section and explain it aloud in your own words; the place where the sentence stalls is the gap. This takes less time than rereading and matches what an exam actually asks for. Dunlosky and colleagues, reviewing ten study techniques in Psychological Science in the Public Interest in 2013, rated only practice testing and distributed practice as high utility, while rereading and highlighting came out low.
Give each fact three contacts, on the day, on the third day, and two weeks later, because the gap matters more than the repetition count. Cepeda and colleagues, publishing in Psychological Science in 2008, suggested spacing at roughly ten to twenty per cent of the retention interval you are aiming for. Three contacts also expose what the previous pass missed, whereas cramming everything into the night before mostly rehearses what is already familiar.
Ten questions of one type build fluency and dependence at the same time, so a rewording is enough to erase the method. Mixing questions from different chapters turns the choice of method into part of the practice, which is what a combined question actually rewards. Accuracy drops at first, and that dip is the sign that judgement is being trained rather than a reason to go back to blocks of identical items.
Copying the correct answer into a notebook achieves little; recording why the answer went wrong is what changes the next attempt. Sort the reasons into a few buckets, such as missing a condition in the stem, misremembering a formula, forgetting a unit conversion, or skipping a step in the reasoning. A reason that appears three times marks a hole in the network, and the repair is a better definition card rather than ten more questions of the same kind.
The syllabus decides where the network stops, not interest, which is why the specification is worth reading before the third revision pass. OCR's subject update in September 2026 confirmed that the GCSE mathematics, physics and combined science equation sheets continue in 2025, 2026 and 2027, and for the life of the current specifications. Edexcel's A-level Mathematics specification (9MA0) supplies a formulae and statistical tables booklet in every paper, with the quotient rule inside it but the product and chain rules outside.
Read a chapter's facts one by one and ask what each has to do with two other chapters; whatever draws a blank is an isolated node. Too many isolated nodes produce a network that looks large and behaves like loose fragments. The EEF's 2018 guidance on metacognition and self-regulated learning puts this kind of self-monitoring at roughly seven months of additional progress, and it is the missing link rather than the missing fact that usually costs marks.
A network loosens within a fortnight, so fifteen minutes a week beats three hours a month. Three actions cover it: recite three randomly drawn cards, add one new link to a chapter, and file the week's mistakes under their reasons. None of them requires reopening the textbook, since everything they use has already been written down, and four consecutive weeks is usually enough to notice recall getting faster.
