Study Leave

Study leave usually falls in the last weeks of May and into June, when lessons stop and the final stretch happens in a library, at home or in a school study room. Those weeks carry more weight than any earlier month, because teaching is over and only the use of time is left. The twelve sections below follow the order I use with students: confirm the rules, build the timetable, and then control the two things that quietly wreck it, your hands and your phone.

Study Leave

Study leave is not something every candidate is given by default. The Department for Education attendance guidance published in 2022 records study leave under code S, says it should be used sparingly rather than granted automatically once the syllabus is taught, limits it in principle to Year 11 pupils, and requires schools to keep provision for pupils who want to revise on site. So the first job is not planning but confirming the terms: which dates are covered, whether attendance is required on exam days, and whether the study room stays open.

The timetable you hold and the one the awarding bodies publish are not identical. JCQ's Instructions for conducting examinations sets the published start at 9.00am for morning sessions and 1.30pm for afternoon sessions, yet UK centres may start up to thirty minutes earlier or later, so the real start can sit between 8.30am and 9.30am, and between 1.00pm and 2.00pm in the afternoon. Where three or more papers fall on one day and total more than six hours at Level 3, or five and a half hours at GCSE, the centre may move an afternoon paper to the next morning; copy dates and start times from the school notice onto one sheet and into a calendar.

Plan backwards from the first paper. Mark the three days before it as no-new-content days, using only the error log, the formula sheet and the parts of the mark scheme where marks keep disappearing; new material needs time to settle, and three days is not enough. Split the remaining days between subjects, giving the weak one about twice the blocks of the strong one, since an even split across four subjects leaves each of them at the level of having been seen once; working backwards also shows which days stay intact, and only those suit a full past paper.

Put the study blocks where the exams sit. Run one block of ninety to 120 minutes from 9.00am and another from 1.30pm, with no phone, no subject switching and no drinks break in the middle; the point is not discipline for its own sake, it trains the brain to produce under load at the hour the paper actually runs, and the timetable will not wait for your peak. Use the gaps for small tasks such as definitions, error-log sorting and mark-scheme reading, and avoid the common mistake of filling the big blocks with copied notes, which feels like work and yields no retrieval at all.

Revise chapter three cannot be ticked off, because it carries no finish line; write the goal as an output instead: four six-mark questions from the 2019 Paper 1, self-marked against the scheme; twelve mechanism cards written from memory; three arguments with evidence for a 25-mark essay. Output goals answer one question at the end of the day, whether it is done, and they bring their own feedback, since a blank card tells you exactly what is missing. Add a time estimate as you write, and split anything over ninety minutes.

Psychological Science in the Public Interest

Dunlosky and colleagues reviewed ten common study techniques in Psychological Science in the Public Interest in 2013 and rated only practice testing and distributed practice as high utility, with rereading and highlighting placed low. That runs against habit, because flipping through a book and making neat notes feel smooth, yet they mostly build familiarity, and familiarity is not the same as writing the point on a blank page. Close the book after each subsection, write the key points from memory, then check against the text; whatever cannot be produced is what deserves the time, and many students take recognition for knowledge until the exam asks for the term.

Spacing is not a vague instruction to come back tomorrow. Cepeda and colleagues, writing in Psychological Science in 2008, put the useful gap at roughly ten to twenty percent of the retention interval, so with three weeks to go the gap between two reviews is about three to four days, while in the final week it shrinks towards a day; three contacts with the same material beat five consecutive passes. Give each topic three dates in the calendar, namely the day you first work through it, a middle review, and a final pass before the paper, and refuse to repeat what already feels solid.

An error log organised by chapter tells you that four questions went wrong in chapter three, which is not useful; sort by cause instead: concept, misread question, units or significant figures, arithmetic, ran out of time. When the same cause repeats across chapters, that is the leak, so beside each wrong answer write three lines covering the step that failed, the key point of the correct answer, and the check to run next time. A week before the exam the causes column alone shows where the marks go, and misreading questions usually outnumbers gaps in knowledge.

A mark scheme is not a document for teachers only; it is a writing manual for answers, and after a paper you compare what you wrote with what each point asks for, since the gap usually sits in wording rather than thinking: because the activation energy is lowered earns the mark, while the reaction happens more easily often does not. Command words carry their own demands, with Explain needing a causal chain, Evaluate requiring both sides and then a judgement, and Justify needing evidence behind the conclusion, all set out in the awarding body specification and sample papers. The common error is an overlong answer whose credited point appears in the third sentence.

During revision the phone is the biggest leak of time; on exam day it becomes a compliance risk. JCQ information for candidates states that taking an unauthorised item such as a mobile phone or smart watch into the exam room counts as malpractice, and the penalty can reach the grade for the whole subject. Decide the night before where the phone stays, and hand it in rather than keeping it in a pocket. Ten minutes in the corridor with your error log beats ten minutes of scrolling, and posting about a paper you have just sat is another line candidates cross while other centres are still waiting to start.

An all-nighter is usually repaid within two days. NHS guidance is that teenagers aged eleven to eighteen need eight to ten hours of sleep a night, and a chronic shortfall affects attention and consolidation, so the pattern that breaks a revision period is sleeping at two and waking at ten, which turns the exam hour into the worst hour of the day. Fix the wake time instead, count back to a bedtime, keep the last hour screen-free, and read the day error log on paper before sleeping; if a night runs short, take the hour in the morning rather than at three, since what is learned at that hour rarely surfaces at nine.

The last day holds no new questions and no unseen paper. The fixed routine is short: read the error log by cause, hand-copy the formula sheet, confirm room, seat and start time, pack documents and equipment, and work out the journey and both meals; write the pacing plan on paper as well, with minutes for the first section, minutes held back for checking, and a cut-off after which a stuck question is left behind. JCQ handles late arrivals through a separate procedure and extra time is not guaranteed, so do not plan around arriving late; sleep before eleven and reach the centre thirty minutes early.
