Edexcel
Topic 6 of the Edexcel A Level Geography specification rewards precision rather than volume. Candidates are asked to move between carbon stores, fluxes and real energy decisions without losing the units. The twelve sections below follow that sequence and can be reused as essay skeletons for four, eight and twenty mark questions.
Topic 6 starts by separating stores from fluxes, since examiners see the two confused in almost every script. The ocean holds roughly 38,000 GtC, the atmosphere about 870 GtC and proven fossil reserves near 4,000 GtC, so the smallest store carries the largest consequence; permafrost adds another 1,400 GtC that is currently locked away. The 2025 Global Carbon Budget puts human emissions at 42.2 GtCO2, with fossil fuel combustion contributing 38.1 GtCO2 and land-use change 4.1 GtCO2, and 1 GtC converts to 3.67 GtCO2.
Geological carbon sits mainly in carbonate rocks formed in ancient oceans, where limestone and chalk hold it for hundreds of millions of years. Volcanic out-gassing at ocean ridges and subduction zones returns a small fraction to the atmosphere each year; chemical weathering of silicate and carbonate rocks removes carbon dioxide again and carries it to the sea. Candidates often assume volcanic emissions dwarf human emissions, yet the annual human total is far larger, so the geological cycle matters for timescale rather than present-day balance.
Phytoplankton fix carbon in sunlit surface water, and the biological pump carries part of that carbon downward as dead cells and faecal pellets. The carbonate pump works through the calcareous shells of foraminifera and coccolithophores, which dissolve at depth and deliver carbon to the deep ocean; thermohaline circulation then moves that water over centuries. A common mistake is to write only that the ocean absorbs carbon dioxide, without naming the pump and the circulation that separate surface uptake from long-term storage.
Terrestrial primary producers fix around 120 GtC each year, and more than half of it returns to the atmosphere through respiration. What remains enters soils as litter and dead roots, where temperature and moisture control how quickly decomposers release it; cold or waterlogged ground slows decay and builds peat. Many students picture carbon stored in tree trunks, yet soils and peat hold more, and the Amazon case study shows how clearance converts a sink into a source.
Carbon dioxide and methane absorb outgoing long-wave radiation, which keeps the surface warmer than a planet without an atmosphere would be. NOAA records 426.07 ppm at Mauna Loa for September 2026 against 424.37 ppm a year earlier, while the 2025 Global Carbon Budget reports a global annual mean of 425.7 ppm, some 52 per cent above the pre-industrial level. The enhanced greenhouse effect is the part driven by human emissions, and it also reshapes rainfall, drying the subtropics while wetting higher latitudes.
Energy security means reliable access to affordable energy, so supply, price and transport routes all count. Energy mix describes the balance of primary and secondary sources and of domestic against imported supply, which is why the specification compares the United States with France. Per capita consumption and energy intensity per unit of GDP are usually examined together, and the players involved, from OPEC and transnational corporations to governments and consumers, rarely share the same priorities.
Oil, gas and coal are extracted where geology put them, not where demand is greatest. Pipelines, transmission lines, shipping lanes and rail form the energy pathways that connect the two, and any interruption is felt in prices long before physical shortage appears. Russian gas exports to Europe show how a commercial route can become a political instrument, so answers that stop at transport cost miss the risk that carries most of the marks.
Tar sands, oil shale, shale gas and deep-water oil are unconventional because extraction is harder and emissions per barrel higher. Canadian tar sands require open-cast mining and heating to separate bitumen, which strips boreal forest; United States shale gas depends on hydraulic fracturing, with heavy water use and groundwater risk. Business interests, environmental groups and affected communities pull in different directions, and indigenous land rights are often the fault line.
Wind and solar can decouple electricity from fossil fuel, but output is intermittent, so storage and flexible back-up decide how much capacity is useful. Nuclear generation is steady and energy-dense, while construction time and waste handling remain its weaknesses; the changing United Kingdom mix, with offshore wind rising and coal retiring, is a serviceable case study. Brazilian sugarcane ethanol shows the biofuel dilemma, because expansion competes with food production and the carbon-neutral claim is disputed.
Carbon capture and storage compresses emissions and injects them into geological formations, which reduces net emissions in principle but adds cost and energy demand. Most operating projects sell captured carbon to oil fields for enhanced recovery, so the net gain is smaller than headline figures suggest; hydrogen fuel cells and electric vehicles shift emissions into the electricity or hydrogen supply chain. The specification calls these radical technologies, and the 2025 Global Carbon Budget leaves only 170 GtCO2 in the 1.5C budget, about four years of current emissions.
Ocean uptake lowers carbonate availability and pH, which makes calcification harder for corals and shell-forming plankton. Roughly 1,400 GtC sits in permafrost, and thaw lets microbes release carbon dioxide and methane that had been locked out of the cycle; once that feedback starts, a sink becomes a source and warming accelerates. Amazon dieback and a weakening thermohaline circulation are the other tipping points the specification expects, so the sequence of thaw, decomposition, release and further warming needs to appear in the answer.
Twenty-mark questions test argument, not recall. Open with a claim that can be challenged, then develop drivers, impacts and responses, each carried by a named case study with a figure; evaluation belongs in the scale contrast between local action and the global budget, or between short-term cost and long-term risk. Weak scripts name countries without mechanisms, list responses without ranking them and run out of time, so three lines of planning before writing are worth the minutes.
