In the May and June season most candidates sit three or four subjects inside a three-week window fixed by the JCQ common timetable. Once the dates are set, revision stops being a question of how many hours to study and becomes a question of which subject gets which evening. The method below starts from the published papers and turns them into blocks a student can actually keep to.
JCQ publishes the common timetable for the following summer, and each board publishes the paper-level detail on its own site. Copy every paper you are sitting onto one sheet with the date and the session, then count back four weeks to fix the start date for each subject; the timetable is more than a map to the exam hall, it is the frame the whole plan hangs on. Subjects that fall early get a short window, which is why a late subject must not absorb the first fortnight. A sheet of dates on the wall also replaces a vague sense of an approaching deadline with something you can measure.
A morning paper at nine and an afternoon paper at half past one leave about four and a half hours between them, lunch and the walk to a second room included. JCQ fixes both start times, so the gap is identical for everyone in the country that day; the middle of the day belongs to food and a short sleep. Read a formula sheet once after that, then close it. Trying to squeeze in a mini test usually means the afternoon paper is fought against the morning one.
A clash happens when two of your papers fall in the same session, and JCQ requires the centre to hold the second one back under supervision so nothing can be passed on. The practical result is a longer day than the timetable suggests. Ask the exams officer which paper runs first rather than guessing, and clear the evening before the clash in your plan.
Giving every subject forty minutes a night looks fair and quietly starves the paper that carries the most marks. Each AQA specification states the weighting of every component, and those weights are not equal even inside one subject. Work out the marks you are not yet secure on, then give the largest share of evenings to that gap; a subject already above the line needs maintenance only. Redo the sum each Sunday, because the gap moves.
Meeting a topic again after one day, three days and a week holds longer than three consecutive nights on the same block. Dunlosky's 2013 review rates distributed practice among the few techniques with high utility across ages and materials. Keep a date column next to every topic, and use a blank sheet or three questions for each return visit rather than a reread. In the last three weeks the pull towards new content is strong, and the topics learned in week one are the ones that disappear.
Cut a two-hour evening into three blocks of forty-five minutes and give each to a different subject. Switching costs a few minutes of re-entry, and the skill it trains is exactly what the papers ask for; a maths paper can turn from algebra to statistics inside one question. Keep the blocks short even when a derivation is going well, and expect the first fortnight to feel slower than a single-subject evening.
Close the book and write down every formula, definition and date you can recall for a chapter, then check the gaps against the text. It takes less time than three rereads and exposes far more. Examiners see answers that reproduce a textbook definition but drop the key term once the question sets it in an unfamiliar context. Whatever will not come out onto a blank A4 sheet is usually the core of the chapter.
A plan with seven full days collapses in week three, because one evening will go to illness, a fixture or a chapter that takes twice as long as expected. Keep Sunday afternoon empty and use it only to finish blocks that slipped. If nothing slipped, move into the next week early instead of adding another paper. Blank space of ten to twenty per cent is what makes a timetable survivable.
Save full papers for the last fortnight and spend the earlier weeks on question types. Time each paper at the real length with no phone and no extra minutes, then mark it against the published scheme and sort every lost mark into one of four causes. Analysis needs about a day and a half per paper, so three papers a week is the practical ceiling; the published mark scheme is a better guide than your own judgement of what looks right.
Concentration peaks in the middle of the morning for most people and dips around two in the afternoon. Rehearsing at nine and half past one makes the exam-day state familiar rather than new; a paper done at ten at night predicts very little. Late work adds little to memory and costs the next day's recall, which matters most in the final week, so shift the sleep pattern at least ten days out.
Reading the question, units, significant figures and command words are shared across every paper, so one practice session transfers to the next subject. A command word sets the depth required: describe a pattern, explain a mechanism, evaluate both sides and reach a judgement. The same ten-second unit card serves physics and chemistry, and the marks lost on these habits are usually the cheapest to recover.
A single notebook beats one per subject, because a book per subject becomes a collection nobody reopens. Three columns work for every subject: the key condition, the cause, and the action for next time. Count the tags each Sunday and fix the largest group that week, since the same habit shows up in maths and in biology. Twenty minutes is enough for a review; longer means the notes are too detailed to use.
The most common failure is a timetable with every cell filled, which looks like effort and leaves nothing for the unexpected. A full plan also removes review time, so week three arrives with only a vague memory of week one. Once one block slips, the whole sheet is abandoned because there is no slack to absorb the delay. Keeping a tenth to a fifth of the time blank is what decides whether a plan survives its third week.
