AQA GCSE

Bioenergetics is topic 4 of the AQA 8461 specification and sits on Paper 1 alongside cell biology and transport. Paper 1 lasts 1 hour 45 minutes, carries 100 marks and is worth half the GCSE, with the same content at Foundation and Higher tier. The ideas here are few, yet graphs, equations and variable design arrive together, so marks leak away in small places. The sections below follow specification points 4.4.1 to 4.4.2 and split photosynthesis, limiting factors, respiration and metabolism into twelve blocks you can revise one at a time.

Photosynthesis moves light energy into chemical bonds: carbon dioxide and water become glucose and oxygen, summarised as 6CO2 + 6H2O -> C6H12O6 + 6O2, with light energy and chlorophyll written as conditions rather than reactants. It is an endothermic reaction, because energy is transferred in from the surroundings by light, so the products hold more energy than the reactants. Chlorophyll inside the chloroplasts absorbs light while green wavelengths are reflected away, which is why leaves look green to us. Plants respire around the clock, so the oxygen you can measure is only the net difference between the two processes, a point the AQA mark schemes expect to see stated in words.

Glucose does not sit where it is made, and the specification names five destinations worth memorising. Some of it goes straight into the mitochondria for aerobic respiration and pays for the day's energy costs. Surplus glucose is built into starch, which is insoluble and therefore safe to store in leaves and tubers without drawing water into the cell. Cellulose for cell walls is another polymer of glucose, laid down as long chains. To make proteins a plant converts glucose into organic acids, then joins them with nitrate ions taken up from the soil to form amino acids. Oils in seeds come from glycerol and fatty acids assembled into lipids, and examiners accept two named destinations where three are asked for.

A limiting factor is the one resource in shortest supply, the single item currently holding the rate back, and the specification lists four candidates: light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration, temperature and the amount of chlorophyll. Adding more of a factor that is not limiting changes nothing at all, while lifting the limiting one lets the curve climb again. Read the graph at its break point, because a rising section means the factor on the x-axis is in control and a plateau means something else has taken over. Chlorophyll is the easy one to forget: magnesium deficiency, disease and insect damage all reduce it. Temperature is not automatically the limiter, since a dimly lit plant is held back by light long before warmth matters.

Light spreads out from a lamp in every direction, so the area it covers grows with the square of the distance and the intensity falling on the pondweed drops away quickly. The relationship is written as intensity proportional to 1/d squared, which means halving the distance gives four times the intensity rather than twice. With distance on the x-axis the curve bends, so plot rate against 1/d squared instead and the points settle close to a straight line through the origin. A mean of 44 bubbles per minute at 10 cm falling to 5 at 50 cm matches that pattern once the distances are converted. Mixing up 1/d with 1/d squared is the error that then spoils every explanation that follows.

Photosynthesis runs on enzymes, so warming the plant speeds up molecular movement and collisions until the rate climbs to an optimum. Push past that optimum and the enzymes denature, their active sites lose shape and the rate falls sharply rather than levelling off. That shape is what separates the temperature curve from the light curve, which simply plateaus at high intensity. When a falling section appears in an exam graph, the answer must name enzyme denaturation instead of saying it was too hot. Stomatal closure is a different story and rarely the reason inside a controlled temperature experiment.

Carbon dioxide is a raw material, so raising its concentration lifts the rate until another factor takes over and flattens the graph. Greenhouses exploit exactly this by enriching the air, though the decision is an economic one: whether the extra yield pays for the gas, the heating and the lighting. Chlorophyll content belongs to the plant rather than the environment, and a magnesium-deficient seedling turns yellow, absorbs less light and shifts its whole curve downwards. Drawn as a horizontal line on a rate graph, chlorophyll does not vary along the x-axis but still moves the curve up or down. Questions comparing two plants under identical lamps usually want chlorophyll amount or leaf area as the answer, and higher tier papers often pair this with the greenhouse economics.

This required practical uses an aquatic plant such as pondweed, whose cut stem releases oxygen as visible bubbles. Sodium hydrogencarbonate dissolved in the water keeps the carbon dioxide concentration constant, and an LED lamp or a water bath between lamp and beaker stops heat from changing the temperature as well. Write the variables out explicitly: distance from lamp as the independent variable, bubbles per minute or collected gas volume as the dependent one, and temperature, carbon dioxide, the same sprig and the same timing as controls. Wait two minutes for the plant to settle at each new distance, then count, repeat three times and take a mean. Bubble counting is noisy, so collecting the gas in a syringe gives steadier readings, and omitting the control variables is where marks are most often lost.

Aerobic respiration combines glucose with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water, transferring the released energy into ATP and a little heat. It happens inside the mitochondria, needs a continuous oxygen supply and yields far more usable energy than the anaerobic route because glucose is broken down completely. Exam questions comparing the two pathways expect that reason alongside the products, since the extra yield follows from complete oxidation. During hard exercise the oxygen supply to muscle fibres cannot keep up, so the cell switches to the anaerobic route. Respiration is not something that happens only in the lungs, because every living cell carries it out, including root hair cells underground and cells deep inside a leaf.

In human muscle, anaerobic respiration turns glucose into lactic acid and releases only a small amount of energy, so lactic acid builds up and brings on the ache and fatigue that follow a sprint. Yeast and plant cells take a different route, converting glucose into ethanol and carbon dioxide, which is the reaction exploited in brewing and in bread dough. Both pathways work without oxygen and both stop partway through the breakdown of glucose. Lactic acid is oxidised once oxygen returns, which is why breathing stays fast and deep for several minutes after you stop. Read the organism named in the question before writing an equation, because yeast never makes lactic acid.

As soon as exercise begins, muscles demand more energy, so heart rate rises while breathing rate and depth increase together. Those changes deliver more oxygenated blood to the working muscle and clear carbon dioxide faster, which the specification wants linked to the demand for energy rather than described as a list. Glycogen stored in muscle is broken down into glucose to feed respiration, and once those stores run low the supply cannot keep pace and fatigue sets in. Heart rate stays elevated during recovery because oxygen is still needed to oxidise lactic acid. Tables of heart rate before and after exercise usually want both halves of that explanation: oxygen delivery in, carbon dioxide out.

Metabolism means every chemical reaction inside a cell or a whole organism, synthesis as well as breakdown, and the specification gives a short list you should be able to recite. Glucose is assembled into starch, glycogen and cellulose; glycerol and fatty acids are joined into lipids; glucose combines with nitrate ions to make amino acids and then proteins; respiration itself belongs on the list too. Excess protein is broken down and its nitrogen converted into urea for excretion, which is the example students most often leave out. Naming the word metabolism earns nothing on its own, since the mark comes from two specific reactions plus where each one happens.

Six-mark answers are usually marked against process, variables, data and conclusion, so accurate cause and effect scores better than a crowd of technical words. Always attach units to numbers: bubbles per minute, centimetres of distance, arbitrary units for light intensity, because a bare figure is marked down. When explaining a graph, say which section rises and which flattens before naming the factor that has taken over. Design questions need the independent, dependent and control variables written out, plus one line on repeats and means. Finally, spend a minute checking coefficients and state symbols, which is where AQA mark schemes are least forgiving.
