At Key Stage 3 the Industrial Revolution sits inside the unit on ideas, political power, industry and empire, Britain 1745 to 1901. Examiners rarely want a single date, because the marks come from causes, consequences and significance. The notes below follow the order most schemes of work use, moving from causes towards exam technique.
Britain had coal lying close to the surface near the new industrial towns, and food output rose after the agricultural changes of the late 1700s. Merchants, insurers and bankers supplied the capital that paid for mills, pits and canals, while enclosure pushed rural families towards wage work in towns. Parliament's own online history puts colonial demand for cotton near the front of the story, since demand is what made machines worth building and what kept the mills running through the war years.
The textile changes came as a chain rather than a single invention. Kay's flying shuttle of 1733 speeded up weaving, spinning became the bottleneck, and Hargreaves, Arkwright and Crompton answered it in turn with the jenny, the water frame and the mule. Cartwright's power loom arrived only in 1785, which is why the sequence matters more than the dates: each solution created the next shortage, so the industry grew in fits rather than in one leap.
The steam engine already existed before Watt: Newcomen's 1712 machine drained mines with atmospheric pressure but wasted fuel. Watt's separate condenser, patented in 1769, and his partnership with Boulton turned that engine into rotary power a factory could drive. Iron mattered just as much, because Darby's coke smelting from 1709 and Cort's puddling from 1784 gave engineers cheap metal for machines, rails and bridges, which is why the railway age follows the iron age.
Factory work changed more than the size of the machines. In a domestic workshop a weaver set the pace and could stop for harvest, but once a water wheel or steam engine drove the shaft, everyone in the building moved to the same rhythm. Overseers logged lateness, imposed fines and read out names, so time itself became something the employer owned rather than something the worker spent, and that shift is what the phrase factory discipline actually describes.
Transport decided whether coal and cotton could reach a mill at a price anyone would pay. Turnpike trusts improved roads, yet the Bridgewater Canal of 1761 cut the price of coal in Manchester so sharply that canal building became a mania. The Liverpool and Manchester Railway of 1830, running Rocket from the Rainhill trials, then rewrote freight costs and forced towns onto railway time, and by the 1850s the network linked most large towns.
Where mills gathered, people followed, and the census records held by the Office for National Statistics show England and Wales growing from about 8.9 million in 1801 to roughly 17.9 million by 1851. Most of that increase crowded into northern industrial towns, in back to back housing built without drains or clean water. Chadwick's 1842 sanitary report linked disease to filth and overcrowding, and the 1848 Public Health Act finally let towns set up local boards of health, though progress still depended on local ratepayers.
Child labour was normal in farming and domestic work long before factories existed; the factory simply made it countable, with children gathered in one building and accidents written down. Parliament's page on the 1833 Factory Act records that no child under nine could be employed in textile mills, that ages nine to thirteen were limited to 48 hours a week, and that the Act created the first paid factory inspectors. The 1842 mines Act kept women and boys under ten out of underground work, and later acts shortened the adult day as well.
Workers learned early that bargaining alone got them nowhere, which is why the Combination Acts of 1799 and 1800 drove unions underground. After repeal in 1824 unions resurfaced, and the transportation of the six Tolpuddle labourers in 1834 became a public scandal that ended in pardon. Chartism then turned the same grievance into a national petition for the vote, a secret ballot, paid MPs and annual parliaments, and it kept returning to Parliament until the 1840s.
The old electoral map had barely changed since the seventeenth century, with rotten boroughs returning two members while Manchester returned none. The 1832 Reform Act redistributed seats and extended the franchise to part of the middle class, which satisfied few workers and left the vote out of reach for most. The 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act then pushed relief into workhouses designed to be worse than the worst job outside, so that only the desperate would apply.
Cotton came from plantations across the Atlantic that relied on enslaved African labour, so the mill boom and the slave trade were parts of one economy. Parliament banned British ships from carrying enslaved people in 1807, and the 1833 Abolition of Slavery Act ended slavery in most of the empire from 1 August 1834. Parliament's own account notes that owners received about 20 million pounds in compensation, while the enslaved received nothing, a detail worth quoting when a question asks who gained from the trade.
Industry needed workers who could read instructions and clerks who could add up, yet the state left schooling to churches for most of the period. The 1870 Education Act created school boards with power to fund elementary schools from local rates, and attendance only became compulsory in 1880. The Great Exhibition of 1851 in the Crystal Palace at Hyde Park drew about six million visitors to a display of exactly that industrial confidence, financed by subscriptions from manufacturers.
Source questions at this level are marked on how well the evidence is used rather than on how many dates are remembered. A causation answer separates long term conditions such as coal and capital from short term triggers such as a single invention or a war. A change and continuity answer says who experienced change quickly and who did not, and a significance answer states the criteria before judging, usually scale, duration and depth of change.
