AQA GCSE
Paper 1 of AQA GCSE Economics is about how markets work, and price sits at the centre of almost every question. Most tasks hand you a real scenario and ask which curve moves, how elastic demand is, or whether intervention is justified.
1. Paper 1
AQA GCSE Economics (8136) is a linear qualification, so both papers are sat in the same series. Paper 1, How markets work, covers specification sections 3.1.1 to 3.1.6 and lasts 1 hour 45 minutes for 80 marks, half of the final grade; Section A opens with ten multiple choice questions followed by calculation, short and extended responses, while Section B sets five mixed questions. Assessment objectives are split 35% AO1, 35% AO2 and 30% AO3, and the specification requires at least 10% of marks to involve quantitative work.
Demand counts only buyers who are both willing and able to pay, which is why the word able does so much work in the definition. A price change moves the quantity demanded along an existing curve, whereas income, tastes, the price of related goods or a change in population shifts the whole curve; examiners reward the distinction because it drives the rest of the analysis. During a cost of living squeeze, shoppers trading branded goods for supermarket own labels is a shift to the left caused by income and taste together.
Supply describes what producers are willing and able to sell at a given price. Higher input costs, new taxes or a broken machine pull the curve left; better technology, subsidies and extra capacity push it right, and farming adds weather to the list. Spare capacity and the time allowed to adjust explain why supply responds strongly in some markets and barely at all in others.
Equilibrium is the price at which the quantity demanded equals the quantity supplied. Above it, unsold stock pushes sellers to cut prices; below it, queues and empty shelves let buyers bid the price up. Diagrams need both axes labelled with P and Q, the two curves named, and the new equilibrium marked, since marks are lost for unlabelled shifts rather than for the wrong answer alone.
Prices do three jobs in a market economy: they signal scarcity, reward producers for responding, and ration limited stock among competing buyers. When shipping costs rose after the pandemic, container capacity moved towards the routes paying most, which is the signalling and incentive functions working at once. The rationing job explains why concert tickets sell out in minutes instead of going to whoever values them most.
Price elasticity of demand compares the percentage change in quantity demanded with the percentage change in price. A price moving from 2.00 to 2.20 pounds is a 10% rise, and sales falling from 2,000 to 1,700 is a 15% drop, so the value is 1.5 and demand is elastic; the sign is ignored and only the size matters. A number without a sentence explaining what it means for the firm rarely earns full marks.
Total revenue is price multiplied by quantity, so elasticity decides which way revenue moves after a price change. With elastic demand, the lost sales outweigh the higher unit price and revenue falls: 4,000 pounds becomes 3,740 in the example above, a fall of 260. Few substitutes, necessity, a small share of income and little time to adjust all point towards inelastic demand, which is why tobacco and fuel taxes raise steady revenue.
Price elasticity of supply measures how quickly producers respond, using the same percentage method. A 10% price rise that brings only 4% more output gives 0.4, so supply is inelastic in that period. Spare capacity, stock levels, factor mobility and above all time explain the result: a restaurant cannot add tables tonight, but a new site can open in three years.
Markets are linked, and the specification expects students to say how. A rise in the price of a substitute pulls demand towards the other good, while a rise in the price of a complement drags demand for both down; bread and flour show derived demand, and beef with leather show joint supply. Naming the link is where the mark sits, and stating the wrong direction loses it.
Cost questions usually start with the structure of the firm. Fixed costs such as rent and depreciation do not move with output, variable costs such as materials and piece rates do, and total cost divided by output gives average cost; a workshop with 2,000 pounds of fixed cost and 3 pounds per unit has a total cost of 5,000 pounds at 1,000 units, an average of 5 pounds, and at a price of 7 pounds it earns 7,000 pounds of revenue and 2,000 pounds of profit. Doubling output while fixed costs stay put pushes average cost down, which is the plainest arithmetic behind economies of scale.
Market structure decides whether a firm takes the price or sets it. With many sellers, identical products and free entry, each firm accepts the market price and its demand curve is close to horizontal; where a few firms hold most of the market, they gain pricing power and can protect it with brands, patents or scale. Consumers in concentrated markets face fewer choices and often higher prices, which is why the Competition and Markets Authority reviews mergers that push market share up, and evaluation should weigh short run profit against long run investment.
Shift questions follow a fixed routine: identify the curve, state the direction, give the new equilibrium price and quantity, then comment on the effect on trade. Higher construction costs shift housing supply left, so price rises and the number of transactions falls; a cut in mortgage rates shifts demand right and pushes price up again, with quantity depending on which shift is larger. Marks are lost by changing the variable as well as the curve, such as writing that demand rises when the answer is the price.
Market failure happens when the price mechanism allocates resources away from the socially optimal quantity. A factory that pollutes imposes costs on nearby residents that the market price ignores, so output ends up too high, while education with its positive spillovers tends to be under-provided. Public goods are non-excludable and non-rival, so private firms cannot charge for defence or street lighting, and monopoly power or asymmetric information can distort price and quantity in the same way.
Governments use taxes, subsidies, regulation and price controls to correct market failure. The Soft Drinks Industry Levy, in force since April 2018 at 18 pence per litre for drinks with 5 to 8 grams of sugar per 100ml and 24 pence above that, is a Pigouvian tax that builds the external cost into the price; England's carrier bag charge went from 5 pence in October 2015 to 10 pence in May 2021 and cut use sharply. Intervention carries side effects, from tax shifted onto consumers to shortages and black markets under a price cap, so evaluation needs winners, losers and a time frame.
Calculations need the formula, the substitution and a conclusion with units. Explanations need a chain, where a price change alters incentives and that alters output and sales. Command words set the depth, with Calculate asking only for a number and Evaluate asking for a judgement plus conditions, while a 105 minute paper holding 80 marks leaves roughly eight minutes for the ten multiple choice questions at the start.
