AQA GCSE
Section C of Paper 1 is Physical landscapes in the UK, and the AQA 8035 specification states the arrangement plainly: 30 marks chosen from two of questions 3, 4 and 5, which cover coasts, rivers and glaciation. Most centres teach coasts and rivers and keep glaciation in reserve. The marks are modest, yet scores sit below the natural hazards section; the gap is rarely about naming landforms and almost always about sequencing process against landform. The sections below follow the paper's own order, moving from structure and geology through coastal and river processes to management and exam technique.
Section C
卷面分三段:Section A 33 分,Section B 25 分,Section C 30 分。
AQA sets Paper 1 at 1 hour 30 minutes and 88 marks, three of which go to spelling, punctuation, grammar and specialist terminology; the paper is worth 35 per cent of the qualification. Section A carries 33 marks, Section B 25, and Section C 30. Those 30 marks come from two of questions 3, 4 and 5, roughly 15 each, so candidates choose which two to answer. In practice the choice itself consumes writing time, and examiners regularly see answers filed against the wrong question number; at a minute per mark this section deserves about half an hour.
Relief in the UK runs high in the west and north and low in the east and south-east. Upland Britain is dominated by resistant igneous and metamorphic rock, giving steep slopes, thin soils and rapid drainage, while the lowlands are largely sedimentary, with clay and sandstone wearing back into gentle, deep-soiled ground. Resistance rather than height alone controls the outline of a landscape, because hard bands stand out as ridges, headlands and cliffs while soft bands are hollowed into vales and bays. AQA 8035 treats this overview (3.1.3.1) as the foundation before any work on coastal or river processes, and an alternating hard and soft arrangement is precisely what produces a saw-tooth coastline.
Whether a stretch of coast erodes or builds is governed by wave type rather than wave size. Constructive waves arrive infrequently with a long wavelength and a low height, and a strong swash against a weak backwash pushes sediment up the beach to leave a wide, gently sloping profile. Destructive waves reverse that balance: short, tall and frequent, they return more material offshore than they deliver, and the beach left behind is narrow and steep. Fetch, wind speed and duration set the available energy, which is why Atlantic-facing western coasts of the UK receive far more of it than the sheltered east.
Headlands and bays reflect an alternating geology: hydraulic action and abrasion quarry the softer bands into bays while the resistant bands survive as headlands. Undercutting at the cliff foot removes support, and weathering along joints, including freeze-thaw and solution, thins the rock above until it fails; the fallen debris is then rounded and washed away so the cliff line retreats. What is left behind is a wave-cut platform, sloping gently seaward at the old cliff base. Where joints are well developed, caves are hollowed from both sides until they meet as an arch, whose roof eventually collapses to leave a stack and then a stump, as at Durdle Door and Old Harry Rocks in Dorset.
Depositional coastal landforms are built by longshore drift, the zig-zag movement in which an oblique swash carries sediment up the beach and a gravity-driven backwash returns it straight down the slope. Where the coastline changes direction or a river mouth interrupts that flow, sediment settles out of the lower-energy water and accumulates as a spit projecting across the estuary; wave refraction then hooks the tip while the sheltered water behind silts into salt marsh. A bar, by contrast, closes across a bay rather than running along it. Onshore winds move dry sand inland, where driftwood, fencing or vegetation traps it and marram grass binds the growing dune with roots and stems.
Cliff retreat is not the work of waves alone. Weathering and mass movement above the waterline loosen rock and detach it in large units, often faster than hydraulic action can quarry the base. Freeze-thaw prises blocks out of joints to produce rockfall, saturated clay and shale slip along a curved shear plane as a slump, and rain-soaked debris running downslope becomes a mudflow. Clay cliffs on the English south coast routinely fail as whole sections after spells of winter rain, taking footpaths and gardens with them, so an answer that credits marine processes alone with retreat leaves half the explanation missing.
Hard engineering holds the line with structures: sea walls take the wave impact directly, rip rap and revetments dissipate energy through heavy interlocking blocks, and groynes trap sediment moving by longshore drift so the updrift beach survives. The weakness of a groyne field is that sediment taken out of circulation is lost to the coast downdrift, where erosion steepens, and this terminal effect is the standard counter-argument in an evaluation answer. Soft engineering works with natural systems instead, through beach nourishment, dune regeneration and salt marsh creation, which are cheaper and visually acceptable but need repeat funding. Managed retreat moves the defence line inland and lets low-value land flood deliberately, trading farmland for new intertidal habitat.
A long profile plots gradient from source to mouth and is concave, steepest in the upper course and flattening towards the sea. The cross profile changes with it, from a narrow, deep V-shaped valley cut by vertical and headward erosion to a wide shallow trough with a broad floodplain where lateral erosion and deposition dominate. Discharge grows downstream as tributaries and groundwater add water, and cross-sectional area grows with it, so velocity often rises even where the bed is flatter. Many candidates assume a gentler gradient must mean slower flow, which is exactly the reasoning the cross profile is designed to overturn.
V-shaped valleys are cut by vertical erosion, and where resistant beds alternate on the valley sides the spurs project from either side in turn. A waterfall forms where a hard band caps softer rock: the softer rock is quarried back beneath, the cap is left unsupported, and collapse makes the fall retreat upstream, leaving a gorge such as the one above High Force on the River Tees, held up by a dolerite sill. Meanders are produced by helicoidal flow, fastest and most erosive on the outer bank and slowest on the inner bank, where deposition builds a slip-off slope. Once the neck between two bends is breached in a flood the channel straightens, and the abandoned loop silts up at both ends as an oxbow lake.
Flood management divides into hard and soft approaches. Hard schemes store or convey water, with reservoirs holding back the peak, embankments raising the channel, straightening speeding flow through a town and relief channels diverting it, all of which work immediately but cost heavily to build and maintain and can shift risk downstream. Soft schemes slow and spread runoff instead, through upstream afforestation, wetland restoration, flood warnings, land-use zoning and permeable surfaces. The Jubilee River, opened in 2002 to divert floodwater around Maidenhead, Windsor and Eton, is a widely used UK example whose disputed downstream effects are exactly what an evaluation question rewards.
Most short answers in Section C are tied to a figure: a coastal photograph, a contour map of a valley, or a diagram of a management scheme. The command word decides the content, so describe needs only the pattern and distribution visible in the figure while explain demands processes and reasons, and mixing the two is a reliable way to lose marks. Level-marked questions reward knowledge, then application, then judgement, and only answers reaching a judgement access the top band. For an eight-mark evaluation, two developed points with figure or case-study evidence plus an explicit conclusion will outscore a longer, undirected response.
A handful of errors recur every series. Erosion and weathering get used interchangeably, although weathering breaks rock in situ while erosion removes the debris, and both operate during cliff retreat with different mechanisms. Arch, stack and stump form one sequence, so reversing the order costs the process marks. Longshore drift, the zig-zag movement of sediment, is not a longshore current, which is the movement of the water body itself. Discharge, velocity and gradient are treated as a single variable, inverting the whole downstream argument, and a question about a management scheme is all too often answered with a description of the problem it was meant to solve.
