Edexcel GCSE英语 小说阅读 非虚构对比 答题

Edexcel 的 GCSE 英语语言(1EN0)没有课本,也没有固定篇目,两卷都在考场上读陌生文本。这决定了它的复习方式和文学课完全不同:能练的只有题型的判断、评分标准的落点,以及时间分配。下面按两卷的题目顺序,把分值、评分依据和最常见的丢分位置拆开讲。

Edexcel GCSE English Language (1EN0) has no set texts. Both papers put unseen material in front of you in the exam room, which makes revision a matter of learning what each question actually rewards rather than memorising content. What follows works through the papers in question order and marks out where the marks are won and lost.

Paper 1 与 Paper 2 的分值与时间切分

1EN0 这套考纲(2015 版,2017 年首次考试)把两卷的分值压得很不均。Paper 1 Fiction and Imaginative Writing 考 1 小时 45 分钟,满分 64,占 40%;Paper 2 Non-fiction and Transactional Writing 考 2 小时 5 分钟,满分 96,占 60%。阅读部分 Paper 1 只有 24 分,写作 40 分;Paper 2 阅读 56 分,写作 40 分。Pearson 官网的考试说明建议 Paper 1 的 Section A 用 60 分钟、Section B 用 45 分钟,Paper 2 的 Section A 用 80 分钟、Section B 用 45 分钟。很多学生把大量练习时间投在 19 世纪小说上,结果占 60% 的 Paper 2 反而练得最少。

The two papers are weighted very unevenly, and that imbalance should shape how you revise. Paper 1 lasts 1 hour 45 minutes, carries 64 marks and counts for 40 per cent; Paper 2 lasts 2 hours 5 minutes, carries 96 marks and counts for 60 per cent. In practice reading is worth only 24 marks on Paper 1 but 56 on Paper 2, which is why candidates who drill nineteenth-century fiction for months often plateau. The Pearson specification suggests about 60 minutes for Section A and 45 for Section B on Paper 1, then 80 plus 45 on Paper 2.

Questions 1 and 2 are pure location tasks and deserve almost none of your time. Question 1 is worth a single mark and asks for a word or phrase from stated lines, so no explanation is needed; Question 2 is worth two marks and wants two separate points, quoted or paraphrased. A common mistake is turning these into analysis and spending the minutes you need for the 15-mark evaluation. Two or three minutes per question is enough, and evidence taken from outside the printed line numbers will not be credited.

Question 3 rewards comment on both language and structure, and structure here means textual arrangement rather than labels: a sudden switch to short sentences, an inserted line of dialogue, a shift in viewpoint, a jump in time, a one-line paragraph. Three or four developed points is a sensible target, each naming the technique, quoting briefly and tracing an effect on the reader or on a character's state of mind; vague praise such as it makes the passage vivid tends to stall at half marks, and simply naming devices without explaining them scores no better.

Question 4 is the highest-tariff reading question on Paper 1 at 15 marks, and it assesses evaluation rather than analysis. You are given a statement, such as the extract successfully creates tension, and you have to judge how far that claim holds instead of repeating your Question 3 answer. A layered response works best: an overall judgement, then three stages of the extract with evidence, plus one place where you concede the writing is less successful. Many candidates lose the top band by asserting that metaphor and short sentences make it effective without ever weighing how effective, while the mark scheme asks for a critical judgement that separates the strongest moment from the weaker ones.

Questions 1 and 2 on Paper 2 are again short retrieval tasks worth two marks each. The paper pairs a nineteenth-century non-fiction text with a twentieth- or twenty-first-century one on a linked theme; Questions 1 to 3 sit on the first text, Questions 4 to 6 on the second, and Question 7 draws on both. These small questions carry only six marks between them, so a single sentence with two points is sufficient, and the minutes saved belong to Questions 3 and 6 at 15 marks each. Extra length earns nothing here, and an answer that drifts off the specified lines earns nothing either.

Questions 3 and 6 each carry 15 marks for language and structure analysis, and that tariff demands four or five distinct analytical paragraphs rather than a list. Each paragraph should name one technique, quote a few words and trace the effect, and consecutive paragraphs should not recycle the same device. Non-fiction writers lean on anecdote, direct address, statistics, expert quotation, emotive adjectives, rhetorical questions and irony, and saying what the writer wants the reader to believe earns more than labelling devices; long quotations rarely pay, while two or three embedded words followed by explanation do.

Question 7 splits into two parts worth 6 and 14 marks, both assessing comparison. Part (a) asks for similarities and only earns credit when evidence from both texts appears in the same response, so a paragraph built on one text stalls. Part (b) compares the writers' ideas and perspectives, which means discussing attitude as well as content: who is more optimistic, who is criticising, who is defending a position. Strong answers keep both texts present in every paragraph and use contrastive phrasing instead of listing points from each in turn; noting that both texts mention hardship, without more, rarely moves past the first band.

Perspective is usually visible in pronouns and tone before it is visible in argument. First-person recollection tends to use past tense with evaluative adjectives, pulling the reader onto the writer's side, while third-person reporting leans on passive constructions and figures, which keeps the reader at a distance. Nineteenth-century extracts often run long sentences with stacked subordinate clauses, whereas twentieth-century texts may open with a short spoken line. Marking pronouns, tense, emotive words and numbers during a first read of three minutes gives you material for the language questions and the comparison alike.

Imaginative writing

Section B on Paper 1 divides 40 marks between content and organisation (24) and technical accuracy (16), and that second block is worth almost as much as Questions 3 and 4 combined. A workable plan is one concrete scene rather than a whole life story: a single setting, two characters, one turning point, and an ending that returns to the opening image. Sentence variety matters because a paragraph of three statements of identical length caps the AO6 range; so does paragraphing, since a page of comma-spliced sentences is the first thing an examiner notices. An unfinished piece cannot reach the upper band for organisation, however striking the vocabulary.

Transactional writing

Transactional writing on Paper 2 carries the same 40-mark split, with a choice of two tasks that might ask for a letter, a speech, an article, a review or a section of a guide. Form features have to be visible on the page: a salutation and a call to action in a speech, an address and sign-off in a letter, a headline and subheadings in an article, a judgement and recommendation in a review. Audience shapes register, and a piece written for peers cannot sound like a letter to a head teacher. Working through a memorised list of rhetorical devices tends to blur purpose, while the bullet points are structural hints rather than sentences to copy; five of the 45 minutes are best spent checking spelling and punctuation.

Technical accuracy is worth 16 marks on each paper, 32 in total, which is more than the whole of Paper 1 reading. Errors cluster in three places: comma splices where two complete sentences are joined by a comma, fragments without a main clause, and apostrophes confused between it's and its. A correctly used semicolon or colon lifts the sentence-structure band, and a misplaced one does the opposite. A five-minute check against three questions covers most of it: does every sentence have a subject and a verb, could this comma be a full stop, and is this its possessive.

Reading before writing is the safer order on both papers, since the writing tasks share a theme with the texts you have just read. On Paper 1 the 105 minutes divide into about 60 for 24 reading marks and 45 for 40 writing marks, and on Paper 2 the 125 minutes divide into 80 for 56 reading marks and 45 for 40 writing marks. The most common loss is not ignorance but a three-line answer to Question 4 or Question 7b followed by a rush into Section B. Timed practice with past papers, with an intended finish time written beside each question, settles the rhythm within two full papers; note also that a parallel specification, English Language 2.0 (1EN2), has been taught since 2021 and weights both papers at 50 per cent.
