Many families answer a drop in grades with another workbook. In England the route from concern to support is far more structured, and it begins with observation rather than extra practice. What follows is the sequence schools actually use, from the first signal to a formal plan, and the places where a parent can push things forward.
Reading errors, missed instructions and long evenings over homework rarely start with attitude. Most areas in England screen vision once in the reception year, and hearing problems such as glue ear are common in primary classes, often showing as not answering when called or confusing similar sounds. Two weeks of notes on bedtimes, night waking and morning mood will tell you more about concentration than any memory of last term, and the school usually holds the screening results on file.
Dyslexic readers are not reluctant readers; they are slow readers who guess. A common word comes out differently each time it appears, lines get lost when the page changes, and spelling drifts so that one word takes three forms on a single sheet. Handwriting and punctuation collapse once a sentence has to be produced rather than spoken, and copying the word ten times only masks the pattern for a fortnight. What helps a teacher is the error type: similar shapes, reversed syllable order, or homophone confusion.
Maths difficulties are easy to misread as carelessness. A pupil may handle a column addition yet lose the second condition halfway through a word problem, count on fingers two years longer than classmates, or misalign columns and miscopy digits under load. Multi-step work such as common denominators or unit conversion often breaks at the joining point rather than at any single step. Asking a child to explain the method aloud separates a reasoning gap from a recording gap, and photographed error patterns carry more weight with a school than a completed workbook.
Attention looks different at home and in class. A child who builds for two hours on a Saturday may still be unable to hold ten minutes of direct instruction, because interest-driven focus proves very little about classroom focus. Teachers hold the harder evidence: observation notes, completion rates, and when in the day incidents cluster. Impulsivity shows up as calling out, leaving a seat without permission and emotions that spike and fade quickly, and none of that on its own names a condition.
Some difficulties never reach a worksheet. A pupil may come home unable to explain the day, misread the edge in a joke, or have no reply ready when a nickname sticks, and group work quietly leaves them on the outside. Physical complaints before school and a Monday morning that repeats every week belong to the same picture. Adolescent mood moves around anyway, so the useful threshold is duration plus impact: two weeks or more, affecting attendance or output, is enough to start a school conversation.
Schools do not open an assessment because a parent feels something is wrong; they act on a specific description. A simple log of date, setting, what happened, what the child said and what followed is enough, provided it records checkable facts rather than impressions. Two weeks usually exposes both frequency and pattern, including which difficulties appear only at home, and the log itself often shows a parent that one type of task fails every time.
The statutory SEND Code of Practice describes school-level support as a four-part cycle: assess, plan, do, review. Assessment gathers the views of the parent, the pupil and staff, bringing in specialists where the picture is unclear, and the plan that follows must state observable targets, provision, a named person and a review date. Review is where the plan earns its place: if targets are not moving, the provision changes rather than simply continuing. Parents are entitled to know when each cycle meets and what it concluded.
The SENCO coordinates special educational needs provision across the school, and the class teacher knows the daily picture, so both belong in the first meeting. Bring the log, recent marked work, any screening or medical report and a short note written by the child. Describing a behaviour and asking a question works better than arriving with a verdict, and the meeting should end with named actions, a review date and the next step if nothing changes. A follow-up email turns that into a dated record.
When repeated cycles of school-level support fail to move things, a parent or the school can request an EHC needs assessment from the local authority. The statutory clock is six weeks to decide whether to assess, sixteen weeks to decide whether to issue a plan, and twenty weeks to the final plan, and a written parental request is itself a valid trigger with no diagnosis required. Refusals carry advice and appeal routes, starting with the reasons and rights notice the local authority must provide.
Attendance is the earliest indicator most families overlook. DfE guidance first published in May 2022 and statutory from 19 August 2024 sets persistent absence at ten per cent of sessions missed and severe absence below fifty per cent attendance, a line that a fortnight here and there reaches faster than parents expect. Mapping refusal days against the timetable usually reveals the pattern, and the guidance expects schools to work with families on barriers before formal enforcement.
Nothing expensive is needed at home. Ten minutes of daily reading aloud, with the adult noting where words are skipped rather than correcting every slip, gives a far clearer baseline than a full workbook. Verbal maths questions reveal the method, short work blocks of about twenty-five minutes protect attention, and a five-minute weekly look at the log produces the one point worth raising with school.
School is not the only door. A GP can rule out sleep and health causes and refer to child and adolescent mental health services where needed, while the local authority Local Offer lists what is available locally and who qualifies. Voluntary organisations publish introductory material for parents, and any private assessment is worth commissioning only once you know whether its report will be accepted by the school and the local authority.
